windshield wiper cowl development...
I'm an ME...been on this board forever...I design truck parts for a living...we might be branching into sport compact stuff.
What do you guys think of this???
Ricey? Nicey?
This is not a production piece yet...it might be...

its pretty slick ,it looks clean but does it block your view in any way ? if not then go for it
| Montanaflash | 11-03-2003 04:36 PM |
How do you suppose that would perform after, say, a heavy overnight snowfall? That would be my only reservation about this type of thing.
| steve_d | 11-03-2003 04:42 PM |
What's snow??? I live in GA...
KIDDING....
there's actually little supports that manage to NOT get in the way of windshiled wipers....
As for front view?? it's not too bad at all...it certainly doesn't inhibit, in fact it may keep you from "looking off the nose" and farther down the road.

I sorta like it. Would look good on WRBP as well.
| steve_d | 11-03-2003 04:46 PM |
it'd be offered in smoke, possibly clear, and it's easily paint to match.

That would be nice up here in montreal, becuase ice freezes on the wipers (and sometimes the stick to the windshield) and they dont wipe well. it might be a good idea for me to get one.

i would be intereseted in one
| Si2Rex | 11-03-2003 05:39 PM |
that looks pretty clean. How much are you planning on selling these if they go into production?
| steve_d | 11-03-2003 05:49 PM |
the truck ones run under 100 bucks...some places have them for 85 or so, so figure right around there.
sound good??

Now only if you could strap some LED's on that thing.;)

I can see somone putting a cold cathode tube up to a clear or neon one...
...if you build it...they will find a way to make you wish you hadn't.

hrm, that thing just doesn't look right

"if you build it, they'll find a way to wish you hadn't..."
I've got that now...
I work for lund. the fiberglass truck accessory people...(it's a hispanic thing down here...) I've got prototype product on display at SEMA, www.lundlook.com
the import division is autoventshade. I think it's autoventshade.com can't remember off the top. If you need a fake WRX hood scoop made from fake carbon fiber...they're your people.

in theory yes, it would be a good idea. but snow is gonna get trapped in there anyhow, no? and when it does, it'd be even more of a pain in the arse to clean.

Im not a big fan of it, but how about making some of those window rain vents.

I'm bugging ventshade for them...they're tough to do becasue you're sticking them to the paintwork, mostly because there's no windowframe.

Cool I definatly want some of those.
My roof scoop is held on with double stick tap, and thats not very areodynamic.

migs76- Maybe, but I think it would be some help the prevent lots of snow building up on the wipers when parked so they stay free when it snows. But you do have a good point on that, it might not help.

Does the cowl interfere with the air diffuser/spoiler that came equipped on the drivers side wiper or did you take it off to make it fit?
BTW- I think it looks sweet and would be interested in purchasing one in the future.

the spoiler is still on the wiper, but it's pretty cramped in there....

well, think of it this way. It looks nice. and it does serve a function. But, let's say when winter hits for most of us in the US or freezing rain for that matter. We all remember the golden rule about lifting up the wipers before going inside so they dont freeze. Is this bolted down so it prevents from lifting? And if it isnt bolted... then you have to take it off and put it somewhere ie...your trunk for instance and have it dry off in there or something. I dunno. Looks cool and you make cool stuff. But, just doesnt seem functional to me. Just my .02 cents

Yeah. I was sorta curious as to how it would attach myself. If it isn't attached too tightly (i.e. glue or silicon) It may be OK to have it on throughout the spring/summer/fall, and take it off for the winter.
Just my $.02

on the corners of the a-pillar the current ones use 3M double lock. (it's like velcro, but both parts are hook parts)
The front edge would screw into the cowl...near where the hood seal is.
the screws are kinda iffy...the piece holds really tight when the hood is closed. might be some kinda non-invasive attachment...

First impression: looks cool.
Second impression: superfluous.
Third impressopm: it'd be really cool to have programable scrolling LED text messaging across its surface (written in mirror-image, of course).

i like it, maybe u could make a GC prototype for us to see. i'd probably be interested.
| Sal-Paradise | 11-10-2003 03:33 PM |
I like the idea, but it'd look better if it flowed better into the edge of the window. (could be because it's a prototype)
Like this... (quick and dirty chop haha)

thanks,
The lack of flushness is because the one I used for prototype was meant for a chevy silverado or something...there's almost 10 inches cut from the center...I had really good light to take the pic..there' a huge ugly seam....you can barely see it...
great photoshop...that's how it would look in the corners
I'm even working on a lip that would bring it more flush with the trailing edge of the hood.

how much volume would you need to make profit? You can also market this as a way to entend the life of the wipers, keeping them out of the sun.
| steve_d | 11-12-2003 10:33 AM |
don't know right now ideal,...trust me, lots of people will know when they hit the market.

your make the cowl cf.. i think that'd be nice
| Need4Boost | 11-12-2003 05:40 PM |
I like that. Gives the car a nice clean look. I would be in to buy one.
| billzebub | 11-12-2003 09:23 PM |
If you can make that, can you make a replacement rear visor for a Mark I MR2?
| steve_d | 11-13-2003 08:25 AM |
I've been thinking about rear visors too....mkI mr2 would definitely be doable...not sure if that's the company direction...might be too "niche" market...if we do a rear cowl, then adding it to the applist might be possible.
I'm just an engineer...I don't own the company.
