Look out, here come the tarmac specialists. Loeb and Panizzi (sp) should be a force. Gronholm should do decent or the best of those all-around type rally drivers. But I do believe we may see a good battle of Loeb and Panizzi (if panizzi is running). It would be cool if Delcour had a factory ride, he's pretty good on tarmac but just damn unlucky everywhere else.
Isn't the new Skoda to run this event? (I'll look it up..) It should be interesting what Skoda will come up with now that they got rid of their Cadillac sized rally car. Not that they will be a contender for a wile but they should eventually progress upward IF the financial support is still there.
Hmm, where's Mitsibushi:lol:
I know they are not racing this year but just had to say it:)
Solberg and Makinen are my favorites, but on tarmac it should prove difficult against the agile Peugeots and Citroen (sp)
Of course I will have to go in hibertnating mode and not read ANY motorsport news since Speed Channel will show their typical 6 day delay...ugh! I've got to watch it on TV!
Cheers,
Davis

It'll probably be Loeb on top unless he runs out of gas.
But Petter will be second. This I decree.

Apparently SWRT has been testing a new suspension and both Petter and Mak both seemed rather psyched. I hope that Petter's win will give the team the momentum they need to take the 2nd 1/2 of the season away from the frogs.

Somehow I see Focus in the picture, 2nd or 3rd. Germany is rather a strange tarmac event, with very abrasive surfice at the Tank Excercise Grounds, very difficult on tires. We may see a lot of interesting stuff going on, however I believe Loeb is going to shine since this is considered his home event (I believe he grew up just on the other side of the border and the scenery is very similar to that at his home country). Panizzi is simply an ace on tarmac, Gronholm is good anywhere. Tommi used to drive very good on tarmac as well, so he might be a contender too. Skoda Fabia is still a project in development, anything can happen. Paasonen and Sohlberg will represent Mitsubishi and probably fight for the driver seat for next season. Markko is my choice for 2nd place, but it may be the repeat of Monte, Citroen 1, 2, 3.

While I missed following the race last year, from what I have read I would suspect that the tarmac specialists should have no problems walking away.
The Imprezas are surprisingly strong on tarmac but most of that success (at least that I've seen) was with Burns so I wonder if the performance went with him. I'll have my fingers crossed.
Really looking forward to the new Skodas!

yeah, the new Skoda will be there, and I can't wait for the debut. :)
Also, Mitsubishi will be there. Jani Passonen and Kristian Sohlberg will be driving the new Lancer. I guess this means they have a good shot at being in the driver lineup next year. I hope Alister stays with Mistubishi too.
As for first place, I'm rooting for Loeb and Solberg in this one.

Hmmm... I am going to go on a limb and say Loeb will run into trouble of some kind.
1. Panizzi
2. Burns
3. Martin
Also of note from the latest news report on WRC.com,
"Richard Burns's 206 WRC has a black number 4 in memory of Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman, who died in a crash during the Oregon Trail Rally earlier this month."
Class act by Burns and a class act by Corrado to let him do it. There is no greater tribute than one that comes from a rival team!

Yeah, Didier was really good on tarmac in a Corolla. But, he has a better chance next year then this weekend (in the car's debut).

I'm really surprised no one is giving the new Focus and Marko more credit. The new Focus has a outrageous looking aeropackage that might give it a new edge on tarmac. Marko is fast and I think he's due for a great tarmac result

Maybe, we'll have to wait and see. I haven't seen the new focus on tarmac yet (test vids or otherwise) but Markko definitely has it in him. I think he will easily be in the top 6 and has a good shot at the podium too.

Subarus having rather a hard time to keep up with competition. Some one might have jinxed Petter, with the talk of Loeb finding his way. It seems Petter got lost this time and lost some 20 Sec. Hope it will all change tomorrow.
Markko is out of first, his car suffers from transmissions problems.

Won't post spoliers except to say a disappointing rally for the SWRT so far. In addition to the now familiar dominance of the French cars on tarmac Ford looks to have a much improved pavement car. With the Fabia now running the Impreza looks like the behemoth out there (yes I know the Focus is bigger than it looks).
Hoping for the best for our favorites but with Corsica, San Remo and Catalunya still to come keeping third place in the manufacturers' standings will be very difficult.

Hmmm... they are running on brand new Pirelli rubber today. Developed specifically to get rid of the Pirelli-on-tarmac. I guess it isn't quite working out for anyone.
Well, hopefully it rains tomorrow so Petter and Tommi get a chance to rise up the ranking.

Michellin tires have won every tarmac rally since 1998. Personally, I think Pirelli needs to step up their asphalt tires before we talk about anything else.
Other then that, Petter has been complaining about a stomach bug. Just bad luck in that department.

The story of the day is absolutely Markko. From 10th to 3rd. Mind you he was 10 S. behind Petter at the and of the day yesterday. Is it the car or the will of the driver? This is awesome and I am not really his fan. I believe he is the champion in the making.
And Subaru, it has to be the tires. Petter is quick but not quick enough, and it does not seem that he lacks power or will to win, so blame it on Pirelli for now. Heck maybe it's the Pirelli girls providing all the distraction;)

Petter seems to be setting some good times now that its raining.
It might be a little too late for anything drastic, but at least he'll get a point or two.

Petter has had the flu this weekend. He really wasn't feeling well Friday, and only marginally better the rest of the weekend.

At least 555 scored points both for manufacturers and drivers standings. Lets face it, the French have the season wrapped up. Peugeot will win - its what happens when you enter four cars and have some great drivers too. The goal now is to get Solberg to the top of the drivers list and get a third place for manufacturers. The race is real tight between Ford and 555 (1 point at present with Ford ahead).
Stepping into the world of blasphemy I will now wonder outloud whether our favorite Finn has outlasted his usefulness. I recognize mechanical failures have contributed to a few DNFs but sometimes they are brought on by a person not quite having the edge a younger driver has. Thoughts or rebuttals from the masses on this topic?

Actually, 555 did nothing but sponsor the cars. ;) I'd rather forget that Subaru has Tobacco sponsorship. :)
As for Tommi's usefullness. I would leave that up to Petter. He's been much more useful to Petter's career than many other drivers would be - so while he's not as competitive as he used to be, he may still have a role to play.

I agree that 555 is not the best way to refer to the Subaru team... but dang, it sure is easy to type ;-)

I guess we are trying to become as dumb as the Europeans and spit at tobacco sponsorship. That's very good, but there may not be Nextels in Europe to sponsor Rally like there is one to sponsor NASCAR. "Pecunia not olet" is as valid today as it was in the times of Roman Empire.
I know for a fact that rallying in some European countries suffered a lot after the ban for tobacco sponsorship was implemented, and it still does.

Actually, I think referring to Subaru first and foremost is the way to go and leaving sponsors out of discussions on this site makes the most sense. Afterall the site is devoted to the car - whether it is baby formula or cigs on the side of the car racing, for this discussion is probably irrelevant.

Everytime someone brings up that Makinnen is getting old, I think of Sainz. I don't hit's a matter of Makinnen being too old, it's just him not having that motivation anymore.

I really want to believe that Tommi could have at least one more good season. He has shown good pace at times this season but hasn't strung it together consistently. Hopefully things will just snap back into place and he'll return to form for a last hurrah!
