Video - 04 STi at the Nurburgring

Undated videos of an 04 STi (USDM) at the Nordschleife. Unfortunately, no audio.

Here is a new series...collected in one location on Google video:
Lap 225 - Following John Felstead, longtime UK Ringer...back in a STi v5 RA again
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2226420961103059415&hl=en
Heavy traffic. Clear power advantage from John's 16G turbo upgrade, both cars have a KW suspension, I've got stickier tires.
Lap 228 - A very wet lap
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2652543256672559260&hl=en
Quick for the wet conditions.
Lap 242 - high front view
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6078054752126555441&hl=en
Quick lap with some unfortunate delays...when you're on stock power any traffic is a killer...especially the Miata at Wipperman. Anyhow, one of my favorite all-time laps...the weather, lighting and fall trees were all great.
Lap 246 - interior cabin view
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8610876313518790074&hl=en
Slower lap time due to a breakdown and some traffic, but the pace is actually pretty good aside from that.
Lap 251 - rear view
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5444442968927921653&hl=en
Decent lap with light traffic. Hounding a modded CG8 STi that was going well enough to make passing a waste...
Car: 2004 STi
- stock powertrain
- KW coilovers, Toyo RA-1 tires, Carbotech XP8 pads, Whiteline sways (after lap 228), assorted improved bushings.
Enjoy.

Do they ever have it so you can just open up on the main straight, or is the check point always there?

The front straight is not open on tourist drive days. Only races and closed track sessions AFAIK.

Hehe...you can only knock my music choice when you can school me on the track (at least the one I know) :) the Killers...The Verve (live in 93)...Jimmy Eat World...good stuff.
Yes, that is the M5 ring taxi in the first video. Not sure who was driving though. Sabine was out on the track that day. In the hi-res version you can see the taxi squirming around after bruennchen. M3s (even the CSLs) can't pull on an STi on the track in my experience. Granted, there are some fast M3s here but that seems to be due to suspension work rather than power.

they don't inspect your car for cameras. if it is obvious you will get caught. i had my chasecam set up in the front grill but i didn't have my recording device at the time. stupid post office!
my friend recorded himself with a camcorder mounted to the head restraint posts on the passenger seat. he just hung his hat on it when he went through the starting gate.

Thanks Myles. It's all due to the Kool Brake Kit I have (review forthcoming ain another thread) :)
I do try to be conservative and work my way to better laps one at a time. For example, I don't really trust these tires in the wet unless thay are fairly warm and there is little water on the road. Seen too many folks crash in the first mile or two in the wet...like a 360 Challenge Stradale two weeks ago...right at T13 (second major turn on tourist days)...ouch...a nice 997 c4s a month ago.... I have hit the old start/finish turn with cold tires and have had a few minor moments there...so now I warm up and catch'em later.

Awesome track drive the M3 looks like he almost lost it a couple of times, I figured it to be a M3 only because it was small and accelerated like a scalded dog when he was in a straight, that driver was not going to let you pass him no matter what. How many miles is that track again I thought it was 16 is that correct.

Was that a red bug eye wagon ~4:18?
I think the track is 13.5 miles.

The M5 ring-taxi has some serious grunt, but you can see how it is relatively easy to close distance on the corners. I was acutally surprised to see the ring-taxi come back into the picture...the lap was pretty laid back.
Just a hair under 13 miles for the full Nordschleife.
And the car at 4:18 in Lap-210 is a GC series wagon from what I can tell in t he hi-res version.

Wow, that's awesome stuff. Even on the PS2, I suck at the 'ring; it'd be ritual suicide for me to try it IRL.
I'm amazed how conscientious the other drivers were, drifting right and hanging back when you pass -- always frustrating to try to pass someone that's definitely slower in the twisties, but tries to make life harder for you in the straights.

When folks are watching they generally get over when quicker cars come through. Unfortunately, it's not always like that. On busier days you can get held up a lot (like the first minute or two of lap 210). The really stubborn folks eventually let you pass...but sometimes grudgingly. After almost losing it a few times some folks come to their senses. Depending on the location or traffic it's not worth trying to pass.
As far as driving the whole north loop...yes you see everything in the video but some of the long straight.
For tourist days you drive almost the whole track (or all of it if you go through the gate on the track (e.g., lap 210) BUT, not long after the gantry there are posted speed limits until you get to the exit or on-track gate. If you see some older laps from the 80s or maybe even early 90s when the "old start/finish" is used (in the 04 STI spec c 8:06 video, for example) you used to be able to drive the straight!

Back in the 70's, before they built the new GP Circuit ... you would do the entire track except for turn one. As a couple of 17 year old US civilian "army" brats, we would run laps up there in his Saab 99. My buddy then won a German National F-Vee race there, on his way to winning the Germany F-V National Championship in '72. First prize was a fully sponsored factory Super Vee season. My friend got drafted instead ... and the 17 year old german kid who was second in the championship inherited the factory ride. First race next year was at the Ring ... huge accident, kid lost both legs.
Instead of going to Viet Nam, a general found out about my friends racing success, had him transfered to Fort Hood, TX after basic training, where he spent his army years running their Motorsports division ... ie. go-kart, motor cross and drag strip complex for the GI's.

Before the GP track, there was the Sudschleife. There is some video (film) of it floating around...I'll see if I can post it. Also, I've got a bunch of photos from 1972 that someone posted a year or two ago...good stuff.

| ToddStratton | 10-12-2006 03:22 PM |
Yep, he is a local. I looked at the car up close a few weeks ago and it's stripped out with a fairly stiff looking suspension setup. Cage and such. A better power to weight ratio compared to my car, but the gearing maxes out around 120 or so from what I can tell.
Last time I was there there was a junked out (looking) old jetta that was shooting 2-3 foot flames out the exhaust and getting around at a pretty good clip. I've got some more videos from the first weekend in Oct. Even one with John Felstead! Who happens to be back in an STi Type 5 RA.

Well, I finally got a relatively undisturbed lap in and on video. Only 8:25 BTG, but there are some costly hold-ups (especially the Miata at Wipperman), so the pace is more like a 8:10. Now if I could just get Subaru to sponsor me for a few laps without traffic...
Because it is mostly deserted it's a little boring, but you won't find a ton of faster laps on video out there by street cars.
Oh, and my camcorder is dying (and I don't mean the battery!), so the quality isn't that good.

Not so much anymore.
Great driving Todd, you've been steadily getting better. If you can track with John, you are doing well. He sure does have the power on you, but your car seems to have more brake and turn in.
Everyone behaved themselves really well out there.

In lap 246 you can see:
- a hair under 140 mph indicated at 1:54...for a few seconds (coming towards Schwedenkruez)
- then again just shy of 140 mph down Fuchsrohre at 2:26 for a few seconds (although my helmet is in the way at the fastest point)
- 7:32-8:09 is 100+ mph

If you can stand the hand-held camera work, it's a pretty fast lap (usually takes me a ~1:20 or so to get to the point where the video starts).
