WRC Rally Italia (Sardinia)

Rally Italia gets off to a positive start: Both Skoda and Mitsubishi announced that they will be contesting the full season next year. Which means that at least two other manufacturers will be in to compete against Subaru.
Road sweeping seems to be a major issue in Sardinia, so expect slower times for Petter on day 1.
Shakedown times:
1 Gronholm (Peugeot) 3m49.0s
2 Duval (Ford) 3m49.7s
3 Martin (Ford) 3m50.2s
4 Rovanpera (Peugeot) 3m50.4s
5 Solberg, P. (Subaru) 3m50.8s
6 Sainz (Citroen) 3m51.6s
7 Loeb (Citroen) 3m51.7s
8 Hirvonen (Subaru) 3m53.1s
9 Schwarz (Skoda) 3m55.8s
10 Solberg, H. (Peugeot) 3m57.7s*
11 Gardemeister (Skoda) 4m01.1s
12 Pykalisto (Citroen) 4m05.9s *
13 Companc (Peugeot) 4m27.8s*

That's very good new about Skoda and Mitsu coming back. The more, the better. It's more exciting that way.

Rally Italia was usually a tarmac rally. Heard couple of rumors that on of these tarmac rallys would have some gravel stages?? Is it Rally Italia?

Carlos Sainz and Marc Marti are Spanish
And the French are winning both the championship and drivers titles so far
Loeb just needs to finish, so I am sure he is not pushing too hard
So, the joke is on you

Watching the Speed WRC Preview show right now.. It's kind of bizarre to see Gronholm driving his kids around in a minivan. WRC car -> minivan seems incongruous :)

Loeb only needs about 12 pts to win the WRC driver's championship.
If he gets second place, which is 8 pts, then he only needs 4 pts for the next few rounds to win it this year.
He's been driving incredible all year.
Hope Solberg wins again though!

WOW, what a feeling of helplessness. You win 3 straight rallies, and you only make up 6 points on Loeb.
| rsholland | 10-03-2004 10:17 AM |
It is is frustrating...

CITRON looks likely to win both the driver's championship and manuafacturer's championship, as both Loeb and Sainz have finished consistantly high in each rally over the entire season.

Damn it I lived in Sardenia for over 3 years. They didn't have the rally then. But I used to drive Alfa Romeo and occasionally Lancia on those beautiful mountain roads there.

Congratulations SWRT. Great job Petter/Phil.
3 in a row!
I'm impressed by Gigi Galli's attempt in the Lancer '04. That might be the highest placing this year for the new car. Yet he was down 22 MINUTES!
SWRT should take a look at Stephane Sarrizan (French Rally team) and Andrea Navarro (Italian Rally team) for drivers next year.

One more thing...
WHY DO THE ITLALIANS GET TO BE SO CLOSE TO THE ACTION!
In Germany/Sweden, we were a good 30 yards away from the cars at most times in spectator pens!
This pisses me off!

Way to go Petter!!! 3 in a row!!! Only problem is Loeb has come in 2nd place in all 3 races :( Can't anyone else beat Loeb?
| skuttledude | 10-04-2004 11:09 AM |
Well done Petter!
He sure has an uphill climb for the overall championship, BUT remember what he did last year? (keeping fingers crossed)
The tarmac event (France and Spain) are going to be tough for Petter and easy for Loeb.
Why can't that Citroen just get a mechanical failure once?
Petter dominated this event. 30+ seconds on the first stage??!!! OMG, that's nearly unheard of especially since there were not any weather variables.
Yea!!

Go Petter.
Loeb deserves the championship. He is fast and consistent and he has the best car. Petter is putting up a great fight and show though. Much better season then F1.

Because when a rally car flies off and takes out some spectators, people will be howling about how rally needs to be safer for the spectators.
Solberg shot himself in the foot. Had he not done his own version of Colin McCrash this season, he'd be in the hunt to repeat. As it is, all that Loeb has to do is get 5th place in the next rally, and he's the champion.
His driving really is spectacular. He never, ever seems to put a wheel wrong, and Citroen certainly has their reliability dialed in. He is indeed a deserving champion.

Indeed!
Although, one could also argue Prodrive shot Petter in the foot w/ their redesigned "water sucking" front end, resulting in 2 DNF's for our fave Norwegian... :(
Oh well- at least it's exciting racing to watch.

W3rd.
One more thing on viewing. Word is on www.rallyforum.com that the Baumholder stages have been asked to be deleted from Germany, increasing safety.
I'm waking my ass up at 4am and camping in a obscure hairpin in February!
That is if SWRT still exists...

Is that a little doom and gloom I sense WRXedUSA?
I think Subaru will stick with it even with the whack a$$ new rules. They feel like the Ferrari of WRC.

Those rules will never happen ............. so stop worrying about it ................ They are going to keep the same motors and probally just knock off active diffs and sequential shifters
