06 STI headlights misaligned? part 1

sufl1 11-02-2006 04:18 AM

06 STI headlights misaligned?
so ive noticed that my headlights dont look perfectly aligned on the road....the right headlight lights up the road about a foot higher than the left headlight. Its more noticable in the 3 position compared to the 0 position. The only reason im even thinking about alignment is the fact that the headlights move up and down on the 06 sti so maybe it needs to be adjusted? any feedback would be appreciated
Ghosthound 11-02-2006 05:14 AM

im not exactly sure what you're saying but.... the cut off pattern is not a straight line. it kicks up on the right side. _/ like that sorta.
Usaf*STi 11-02-2006 05:17 AM

mine is exactally the same. right a lil bit higher then the left. im not sure if they are not aligned or what but there seems to be no problem with it. so im going with, "if it aint broke dont fix it"
sleestacks 11-02-2006 05:43 AM

My 06 STI is the same way. I saw a post a couple weeks ago (yeah I searched) that said they were purposely aimed uneven, so as not to blind other drivers.Driver side lower then pass. side. Not sure if it's true or not.
[emailprotected] 11-02-2006 07:10 AM

same on my 06 also
Uncle Scotty 11-02-2006 07:12 AM

....this is normal...it is supposed to be like that.....it is a good thing.....leave it alone.
jlitch 11-02-2006 09:18 AM

same here
KrazyKarl 11-02-2006 09:22 AM

The left side is lower than the right so that you wont blind oncoming traffic when youre driving down small roads.
PessimiStick 11-02-2006 09:45 AM

My Evo was like that as well. I fixed it because it was annoying. Intentional or not, it's "broken".

+1, come on people have you ever owned a car before? My dad's 4Runner, mom's accord, my old legacy, and my sisters grand am all do it.
CatfaceType-R 11-02-2006 11:06 AM

mine seem equal, but i am probably just cracking out
kaisersouse 11-02-2006 11:15 AM

its intentional. lef tlower to not blind, right higher to see signs. on RHD models its the other way around.
dbarnblatt 11-02-2006 11:31 AM

The lights are aimed at a height designed to work together; but they have an internal baffle inside the projector that blocks the light on the left side, pictured here:

So the headlight projects a pattern like this:

The result: It does not blind oncoming traffic... so now it looks like you broke your Evo by trying to "fix" it.

Anyway, if you think you have a problem take it to the dealer...

You are misinturpreting what I meant.

I meant it's "broken" in the sense that wether or not it's intentional, I don't like it. The dealership wouldn't change it because that's the way it's designed to be. I fixed it myself, and my pattern is how I want it now.
Shifty_Jack 11-02-2006 02:12 PM

So you're the guy driving around blinding oncoming traffic... that sounds "fixed" to me.
You may not like the light pattern, but i really hate being blinded by oncoming traffic.
I don't like my brake lights, so I am going to "fix" them. I don't care if other drivers will have no idea that i am slowing down or coming to a complete stop. The dealership wouldn't disconnect them, so I did.

Did you lower the right side or lift the left side (blinding oncoming drivers)? Personally I like the higher right side (the way it comes from the factory)... and as you drive down the road it is perfectly aligned... the beam starts low on the left... lifts up a bit in the lane you are in and then lifts up a bit more for the shoulder and to see higher placed signs on the side of the road... pretty well designed and high tech. That's with the STI though.. not sure how your evo is.

...great...so now ya blind oncomming traffic....great
athakur999 11-02-2006 02:35 PM

You can get pulled over for having your lights incorrectly set. If you get in an accident caused by blinding someone due to your "fixed" lights, guess who'll be at fault?
Mavrik 11-02-2006 02:38 PM

Well I had always wondered about that and today I learned something. Thats pretty cool.

shame on those trying to fix this. I hate getting blinded by traffic.
kaisersouse 11-02-2006 02:48 PM

people like this are the reason the 4 fog/driving lights i mount to the front of the car will have a special switch that activates the "wall of light" (oem fogs, highbeams, all driving/fog lams)

It's the same pattern as the pic you posted earlier. I understand the principle behind it, I just don't care for it.

Why does everyone else assume I raised the driver's side?

Are you saying that in all of your latent stupidity you would raise the left light and blind people?

Good god.

Edit: For the record, the driver's side adjustment gear is a *complete* bitch to get to, so even if I wanted to do that, I would have taken the lazy way out and lowered the passenger side.
Nico Flax 11-02-2006 03:54 PM

I did the self adjust as recommended on this board, and at first I thought I had miss calculated or something cause each time I would adjust it, it would come out the same, uneven. Great to know its suppose to be like this.

Let me saying adjusting your headlights, 06s, makes the HIDs work so much better! Just lower them if people start flashing at you.

So fixing the side that doesn't blind everyone is somehow less intelligent than blinding everyone?

Are you seriously that stupid?
jac04 11-02-2006 06:06 PM

Is the headlight aiming for the 06 different than for the 05?
The 05 Factory Service Manual specifies that both headlights be aimed exactly the same (with a full tank of gas and someone in the driver's seat). There is no mention of aiming the LH light lower than the RH.

My latent stupidity? I was just asking you what the you did to your $36,000 car with your Fisher-Price took kit... raise the left or lower the right? Still not sure what in gods name you did to your car... and really how can you make it better?

*Grabs popcorn*
Big-E 11-03-2006 07:53 AM

You should leave it.

You want the right side a bit higher to effectively illuminate the right side of the road.

Take it, or leave it.

I lowered the right, it doesn't take a giant ****ing leap of logic to figure that out.

It's better because the pattern is flat, and that's the way I want it. "Stock" is not synonymous with "best".

Done with this thread now, since some of you are obviously mentally deficient.
CALI07TR 03-17-2007 09:39 PM

funny because on my 07 WRX the driver side headlight is higher then the passenger side . it annoying but i guess theres nothing i can do :(
bWRX 03-17-2007 11:33 PM

And in the UK and JDM, they are higher on the left, which makes it kinda rude to retrofit JDM or UKDM lights.

You my friend need to take your attitude and yourself back to where you came from, seriously.

Your misinformation baffles me, and yes, in stock position, is usually where the lights are the "best" since they are aimed to get the most intensity and light to the places where you need it the most.

So you lowered the right? Now your headlamps are un level, nice job.
