allblackgsrt 12-12-2006 06:59 PM

Painting rims fun
Was bored on Sunday so I figured try the stock wheels in black. Got some scotch pads, 2 cans of duplicolor wheel paint in black, and an old sheet.
1.cleaning, took about an 15 minutes a rim mine were dirty
2. scotch pad each rim untill dull looking, about 10 minutes a rim
3. cleaned throughly again and let dry
4. thin thin coats about 7 coats each rim, took about 2 hours

First shot, rim on far right no coats, then one coat, two coats, and three on the left.

Let them dry for 24 hours and heres the final, turned out really good its all about taking your time

Speed Racer 12-12-2006 07:12 PM

BlowDro 12-12-2006 07:47 PM

no clear? do they make matte clear?
allblackgsrt 12-12-2006 07:51 PM

no clear, I was looking for a flat look. They make duplicolor wheel paint in clear, I would say about 4-5 thin coats on each rims and they would look good just not my style
Scion 12-12-2006 08:00 PM

Nice! I did the same to my rims last year around this time, drove through alot of snow last winter and they still look great.
allblackgsrt 12-12-2006 08:20 PM

I am waiting on a special order list for 16X8 rota slips. Then these will be sold

Ewww, white wheels FTL!

I painted my 2006 WRX wheels with the same paint (Duplicolor Graphite) and they looked great. Then I went to have the tires dismounted to sell my RE92's the paint chipped off the edges. Now I need to have them powdercoated. You really need to be using their clear coat or they will chip off really fast.
Rayman21287 12-12-2006 08:49 PM

I like the rim with one coat of paint.
allblackgsrt 12-12-2006 08:55 PM

yeah I have to get my tires on, they come in on thursday, should be fun to see them after that. Hopefully they will be gentle.
Ryan314 12-12-2006 09:22 PM

Nice... that's what I used, Duplicolor Wheel paint.
Flynlow151 12-12-2006 09:38 PM

I am pretty sure you can get a flat clear also. That way you can enjoy your paint job more that just one season without it coming off.
allblackgsrt 12-12-2006 09:49 PM

Alright looks like I should clear, so will take care of that tommorow after work, and get some pics up. FUNN
turbokonejo 12-13-2006 07:51 AM

LMFAO at flat clear. Doesn't even make any sense to me really. Shoot it like a scary cat and it would look dull not flat and if thats the case then whats even the point, If anything you would have wanted to paint it with a one stage paint.
BlowDro 12-13-2006 10:10 AM

why is flat clear so weird? not all clear coats has to be glossy

Rallycarperson 12-13-2006 11:06 PM

For the Duplicolor wheel paint (which is what you should get) is about $5.45 per can at Autozone. No matter if it's paint or clear.

allblackgsrt, did u clear your wheels, i would like to see the finish
allblackgsrt 12-13-2006 11:45 PM

didn't get a chance to clear them today

1. I used two cans of duplicolor wheel paint (choose your color)
2. Going to use one can of duplicolor clear (they recommend 2 coats of clear per rim, so you should be fine)
3. I used 4 scotch pads (probably not necessary, just figured a new pad for each will scratch better)
4. Regular Sponge and soap (I used dish soap)
5. Old shirts to dry them
Also important: MAKE SURE IS ABOVE 45 degress, or atleast thats what I was told

Steps are as follows:
1. Remove rims from the car
2. Clean rim throughly, (really clean very well)
3. Allow the rim to dry and wipe it dry with old shirt
4. Take a scotch pad and scratch the surface of the rim until it doesn't look shiny and more (took me about 10-15 minutes per rim)
5. Throughly clean the rims again ( most important thing is to take your time and be patient, get in all the little cracks)
6. Allow time for the rims to dry and then wipe clean again

FOR ALL OF YOU WHO STILL HAVE THE TIRES ON:
If you have the tire still on the rim look into getting some 4X6 note cards and placing them between the rim and the tire all the way around, alot better than taping of the tire

7. Begin with thin coats (I tried to stay about 8-10 inches away and move constantly. Again take your time, 7 thin coats will look better than 3 thick coats.
8 Allow about 10-15 minutes for drying between each coat. THINNNN
9. Apply between 6-8 coats, (I just coated until the two cans were empty)
10. Allow rims to dry for atleast 24 hours
11. Then you can clear the rims if you please (Thinn coats will be very important with the clear or the rims will become foggy in areas)
12. Allow a little more time between clear coats
13. Let dry and slap them on

TAKE PICS OF YOUR NEW WHEELS
06wrxkiid 12-13-2006 11:47 PM

just to get it straight for myself...

-i should first, clean the rims thoroughly..
-scotch pad? or.. what kind of sandpaper should i use for my 06 wrx rims? what grit and then that wetsandpaper grit stuff??
-clean the debris it left from sanding
-primer them?
-spray about 5-6 light coats or untill im satisfied with the look
-spary 5-6 coats of clear coat

let dry for atleast 24hours... could this dupli color paint withstand the weather.. likee 40degrees or 30.. while putting it on the car

thanks.. all i need to know because im doing this friday with a friend (hes doing it on his type s) and i really dont want to f*#% up and feel like an a55
:disco: ill post some pics on friday, of the process and everything

ahh
V never mind.. but still sandpaper question
allblackgsrt 12-13-2006 11:57 PM

skip the primer its not needed, scotch pads will be enough the scratch the surface before painting. If you insist on getting sandpaper, I would advise against it, but 400 grit would work.
JCity 12-14-2006 05:48 AM

wish i could paint my wheels but i only have one set and my cars my daily driver :( ...

maybe one day.
BlowDro 12-14-2006 08:14 AM

i am scared to clear the wheels because i am looking for a matte finish. if i do not plan on butting tires on these rims again will it matter?
allblackgsrt 12-14-2006 08:36 PM

I talked to someone today that works with duplicolor and they told me that clear coat was not nessary. They did say that the durability will be increased, but won't make a huge difference. The paint was made to resist chipping and cracking without a clear coat. I don't really want shinny rims, I will get some pics when they go on the car.
allblackgsrt 12-22-2006 05:59 PM

Pics up of the new stuff
martinus 12-22-2006 06:14 PM

Should have, painted them with the tires "on". The tire guy mounting tires back on will def. tear/chip the spray paint. ( no matter how carefull. )

Then you will have to "tuch-up"...

 On the note card idea.
allblackgsrt 12-22-2006 06:24 PM

actually I got them mounted today, no chips at all
G3Red04WRX 12-23-2006 10:41 AM

Car looks good with the wheels mounted, but paint your skirts. They will look much better than sti skirts on your car.
ChrisL2 12-23-2006 08:04 PM

Looks good. I did that to my chipped/scratched Rotas last month.

Actually, it will be better to do it with the tires off. You can sand/scratch the surface around the lip and clean around it way better with no tire there. This will let the paint adhere better and thus it is less likely to chip when the tires are installed/removed.

I did the same thing with mine, had the tires removed on one side. The lip looks way better on those then the ones where I didn't remove the tires.

I also didn't get any paint cracked/chip when the tires where remounted.
Force 12-23-2006 08:13 PM

Hey, looks like we had the same mindset! I was bored on a Sunday too and took care of that. Duplicolor FTW!

(needs a car wash)

The only thing different I did was leave the silver center caps unpainted for a "police car" look  ;)
100_Percent_Juice 12-24-2006 01:25 AM

Looks good, I like the "police car" look as well.
allblackgsrt 12-24-2006 04:51 PM
