06 WRX Sedan autox setup for DS

I have a few questions I need some info on. The dealer has verified that the optional BBS wheels and short shifter are port installed, so that makes them DS eligable.
What width is the optional BBS rim on the 06? 7" , 7.5" , or 8"
Will Kuhmo 245/45-17 710s fit without rubbing?
Are the Koni inserts the best stock legal option on struts?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If they are 7's keep the stockers...
245/40/17's should fit without rubbing, and why would you want 45's and get a disadvantage in gearing?
Koni inserts or leda shocks would be your best bet :p

245/40/17 would be your best bet.
32 hollow strano bar would be your best bet.
Lots of toe out would be your best bet
8611 double konis, in a zzyzx stock housing with the spring perches welded on to adjustable collars adjusted to the stock height would be your best bet.

The BBS's are DS legal? And since when are they added at the port???

You guys are really into gambling I guess.
Glad to see that someone is serious about campaining an '06 in DS. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the Type Harrrrrrrr matey, and the BMW 330.

Thanks for the replies,
I am not seeing the 710s available in 245/40-17 yet, only the 245/45. Am I missing something on that?
As far as the wheels added at port, I dont know when it started, but I have confirmed this on the 06 through three dealers.

If the wheels are 7.5 then stuff a 275 on there. The 245/40 should be avail for next year. There is always the kook 214 as well. 275 is out now with the 245/40 coming for next year.

The optional BBS wheels are 17x7. For $3000, there's basically no advantage over the stock '06 wheels.

My thoughts as well...
Why buy $3000 BBS wheels in the first place, money not well spent...

Are port installed options legal for stock classes now? I thought that has been the problem with the short shifter and larger wheels with DS for the past few years.
| wrxkix | 11-05-2005 07:12 PM |
They are port installed on the 06s, not dealer installed. The port is owned by Subaru and considered part of the "factory", therefore they are stock legal this year. This does not apply to the previous year models when the parts were dealer installed.
On page 226 of the 2005 rule book under Stock Category Clarifications:
"SUBARU WRX OPTIONS
The following items are port-installed options on the Subaru WRX, are listed when installed on the vehicles window sticker, and pending evidence to the conrary are considered legal: carbon fiber trim, turbo boost gauge, titanium shift knob, short throw shifter, rear diff protector, spoilers, arm rest extension."

Update
I now hate the Strano swaybar and the Koni single adjustable inserts for the front and rear on the way. Koni now has the adjustable insert for the 04-06 WRX. In talking to Sam, I think I was the first one to order the new Koni rear adjustables for the 04-06 from him.
Any word yet on the 245/40-17 V710s being ready this year? I am going to hold off on the tires if they are coming out soon.
Thanks

Did you get te Konis re-valved? Off-the shelf valving on WRX Konis isn't that hot for autocross. PM Hoppe for some valving specs. And tell him he's a ***** while your at it.

Don't order tires yet. They'll only freeze in your garage; unless you like cryo-treated tires anyway.
What region are you in? If I were you I'd find a local hotshoe to help you get the car in top form early in the season too.

What is wrong with their valving? I'm going to pair them with some stiffer springs for STX, probably the Crucial Racing springs. Is it only an issue for someone in the stock classes?

I did not get the Konis revalved. I thought about it, and talked to a few people and deceided to go with the stock valving for now.
I am in the Blue Ridge Region in Virginia. I talked to the local Suby people and they have given me suggestions which have been very helpful.
Thanks for the suggestions,

Any more input on whether the optional BBSs are now actually port-installed for MY '06 cars? From what I've read, these wheels are 7.5", which would open up a crapload of aftermarket wheels for stock (and if they are like most OE Subaru 7.5" wheels they are probably +48mm offset as well, allowing even more aftermarket options). Having Rota and SSR's catalog opened for D-Stock, would be sweeet! :D

Take this with a grain of salt..I'm on the phone new with SOA Cust Service.
He states the BBS wheels are... 17 x 8 and are put on at the port, and delivered to the dealer with the new wheels, with no option to retain the 'stock' wheels.
I'm shooting off an e-mail to Doug Gill now. :)
The SCCA defines the port as an extension of the factory. All they (SCCA) would need, in writing, is that the 17 x 8 wheels are put on at the port. IMHO of course. Hence... they are NOT dealer installed.
Anyone have a direct connection to SOA to get something in writing regarding this?

Not that old...it was a 2006 thread at least.
But yeah, I revived the thread as it was never fully answered and could make a HUGE difference in the wheel selection for D-Stock WRXs.
He states the BBS wheels are... 17 x 8
17x8? Umm...that doesn't sound right. I've only seen them claimed to be 17x7 or 17x7.5 and AAArims.com (which sells OE wheels) claims they are 17x7.5. The only factory 17x8s I've ever seen were the 05+ STi wheels (maybe the SOA rep is confused as the STi wheels are BBS wheels also).
Does anyone know someone who actually has a set of the Subaru BBS option wheels and thus can read the markings inside to get the actual width and offset?

Indeed, I almost bought an 06 with the 17x7.5 BBS and they were port installed and wrapped with 225/45 Bridgestone RE050s. This particular dealer at the time had about 14 of the 06 WRXs and 3 had the BBS rims. The sales manager made a comment, saying he didn't like it when they come like that because it makes the car harder to sell.
Personally, I liked them, though I don't know if I'd pay $29k for a WRX with them when I could walk next door and get an Evo for the same price. BUT that's another discussion..
EDIT: Interesting, the Subaru website states that these wheels come with a 215/45 RE11 tire and of course they don't give a width on the wheel.

Are ya ready for this???
Hi, Keith,
If the wheels can be installed on the car when delivered to the dealer,
then there is no need for a "clarification" - they are compliant as
standard wheels.
You've pointed out the difference between the earlier cars and the
current models - before they were not available pre-installed and now
they are. As an example, it's the same with the MINI Cooper S with the
JCW tuning kit. Before 2006, the kits were only dealer installed - now
the dealer can get the JCW kits pre-installed so the 2006 MINI Cooper S
JCW cars are eligible for Stock category.
What are the differences between 2005 and 2006 JCW cars? Nothing -
except the 2005 car is still not eligible for Stock because it was not
available pre-installed at delivery to the dealer. The cars and the JCW
parts are identical.
The wheels as you've described are legal for - no FasTrack necessary.
Hope this helps.
- Doug
So, if we can find out what wheels they are... (17x8 or 17x7.5) They are LEGAL!
Rejoyce all ye Subie Stockers!!!
Just a note... I think Doug meant that 'when delivered to dealer' as 'before delivered to dealer'. Whee. :)

Everyone agrees with you. It would be rediculous.
Here's the main point: if the BBS wheels are considered legal at a wider width and different offset, then ANY wheels matching those dimensions are legal to run.
We're just trying to drill down what the size and offset on the delivered wheels are. The nearest dealer to me right now is 25 miles away. I have a couple calls in... and I know one of their cars has the BBS wheels. The info should be stamped right on it.
