I would like to know also. I really dont want to paint my lights nor can I afford the JDM price tag ones, so these look like a good thing.
STI 2 NV 03-07-2005 05:10 PM

i wouldn't waste the money on those. paint yours. if u don't like the look then u can always trade with someone.
ebeck 03-07-2005 05:35 PM

Well, painting them is money. It takes time. What 4 or 5 hours if you rush. These are less than $200. If these look as good in person then it is WAAAAAY cheaper then my time.

Anybody seen them in person?
STI 2 NV 03-07-2005 05:40 PM

um, $2-4 for spray paint. took me an hour to do, all 3 times i've done it.
ebeck 03-07-2005 06:58 PM

OK. Post a close up. I have done it twice and not happy either time. IF I look close there are defects. Not from 10 feet mind you. But 1 foot..... looks hacky.

....a lot better than the cheap ass ebay lights are gonna look on a dark night.....
Uncle Ben 03-07-2005 08:02 PM

These look like OEM 9007 light construction though? If they were those horrid eBay H1 "projectors" than maybe ya...

don't have closeups because i don't have them anymore. they looked perfect to me up close when i looked at them.
Drew888 03-07-2005 10:14 PM

IMO, that's an ugly light...period. You can have a much better look if you are real patient.

I have close up pics of my painted lights. I was somewhere around the third or fourth person to do this right after Koji first posted about it a long while back.

I took it a step further and was the first to tape off more of the outer housing for a different look and I have zero defects/problems. I am about a year on this pair (I have painted and exchanged lights with others-they didn't want to do it also).

It's about 4hrs to do it right and a second pair of hands. I really like the way it turned out.

If you want a close up PM me your e-mail.
nos 03-07-2005 10:52 PM

try it out and see. i've had good luck with cheapo ebay stuff so far, like the strut bars and endlinks.
....a lot better than the cheap ass ebay lights are gonna look on a dark night.....
You have no idea how good or bad they are going to look - if they just took an OEM light and duplicated it (not at all hard to do) light output should be the same.

I'd also like to see some closeups of these lights - maybe even a side by side comparison with the OEM lights for performance.
Uncle Scotty 03-07-2005 11:41 PM

....if they are OEM replicas, then they MAY indeed be OK.....but the only way to tell if they are worth a damn if get a set and see.....

I HAVE seen a set of the 'prodrive' replica ebay lights and they were 100% pure total garbage....
ebeck 03-08-2005 12:28 AM

The rear housing on those is identical to the OEM one. These seem to be decent quality. I'll probably just wait for JDM projectors with balast.
veightkiller 03-08-2005 01:21 AM

i just paint mine and yeah it will cause you 1-hr of ur time and a $4 bucks paint...and it's worthy..
Diversion 03-08-2005 05:38 PM

The picture of the rear of the headlight looks pretty OEMish in quality.. Someone should really verify if they ever made black housed non-projector headlamps in Japan...

Furthermore, the JDM headlamps that look identically to our 02-03 bugeyes use H4 bulbs and not 9007.. I will e-mail the guy running the auction and ask what size bulb these take.

How do those differ from the painted stock headlights? They look like the same thing. Might as well just buy the paint and diy, it's cheaper anyway... and it doesn't take that long to do.
file_id 03-09-2005 02:36 AM

There is another thread on these ebay lights either on iclub or clubwrx. Someone said that one side isn't flush with the bumper. Seriously it would be cheaper or the same price to buy a set of used stock lights and paint it yourself.
mobilezen 03-09-2005 07:46 PM

The fitment is usually very close but not exact to OEM... I've seen and installed headlights for civics, accords, eclipses...but not WRXs. I noticed at night, all the beams seem to shoot weird shapes instead of flood the ground with light. I would recommend just finding an extra set of OEMs to paint. That way if you mess up, its ok.
ATX25RS 03-10-2005 01:23 AM

i have done A LOT of headlight mods....took me about an hr the first time...i have got it down to about 45 minutes :D yeah 1 can of paint can do about 4-5 sets..

here is a pic of gjhsu's that i did.

I think a few weeks ago some one posted wiring problems with these lights... I have no clue about the beam pattern but he was having alot of problem getting everything wired correctly, and I don't think he ever got the turn signal connected. I could be wrong if they were the same lights or not, but I would check to on them before getting them.
Zeker555 05-01-2005 08:46 PM

trying to reawaken this thread, i too am wondering if anyone has experience with these lights.
alter.ego 12-12-2005 12:02 AM

just had a close encounter with a deer. it took out the passenger el cheapo ebay wrc headlight that the previous owner had installed. i am planning on checking out these lights and will post the results. should have the m in about a week.

looks good
sweetrex 12-12-2005 12:39 AM

When my front end got taken out by a Daewoo, and I was handed a check from the insurance company, I bought a pair of these. They are great! they gave me the look i was going for, they fit beautifully, and the back is identical to the non-busted one I pulled off the car. They do take a 9007 bulb, and the paint is done very well. The paint is a matte black, so if you want them to shine, this isnt the headlight for you.

Mine came out perfect the first time I did them. You just have to make sure that you use high temp paint (grill paint seems to work really well). Also make sure than you dont get any of the black sticky stuff on the reflective parts. Its really easy. I wouldn't waste the money unless you arent very handy at all. If you aren't or you don't feel like doing them and you live in san diego you can pay me $25 and i will do a perfect job on some for you. :D

Still happy? How can I ensure I get the same ones you got?

What about these ebay lights? They say they're "SAE/Dot Stamped/Approved". I wish these would work since I have damaged my stockers (which were painted).

I too am curious about these lights, and I've heard "why dont you just Koji your lights..."

I already have modded my existing lights, and the results were excellent. Problem is, they are hazy inside and out. Strangely, they've been hazy since I bought them. I've polished the outside, which was somewhat effective, but I think the inside has gotten hazy from the black krylon paint I used on the mod "gassing" out. I let it dry for a couple hours before I put them together, but the end result is just a dirty-looking light.

Instead of re-cracking them open I'd like to purchase a plug and play option. These look mostly like a well modded light, with the benefit of a nice clear housing.
BurtonCR 08-02-2006 11:46 AM

bleh, save for JDMs. Dont waste $200 on these.
Zeker555 08-02-2006 01:59 PM

with condo payments, school loans, and a greater interest in handling and engine mods its hard to justify $850-1100 for a JDM light set, as cool as they are. Plus my hood and front bumper has 60k miles of hard highway driving: i.e it doesnt look factory sweet anymore.

Why hate on someone looking for a cost-effective alternative to $1k lights?
taerron 08-03-2006 12:32 AM

had some and sold them. the light output wasn't that great compared to stock. and the jdm's don't have good light output cause the people who care aim them too low for oncoming traffic and that kills your light output
Suby.LOVE 08-03-2006 01:04 AM

just paint your stockers, i would rather spend time painting them than spending 200 bucks on something that could cost only 4 dollars and a couple of hours. Mines came out pretty clean when i did them.

That's super, but you're really preaching to the choir. I have Koji'd (painted) stockers, but trust me, sometimes you need to replace the stockers...like when they get damaged... Used OEM is also a great way to go...we all know these things. However, this particular thread has one purpose and one purpose alone in my mind. Riddle me this: Are *all* ebay HL's crap? Earlier in this thread, I quoted one guy who seemed stoked, but just like the ebay IC's, there are more than one manufacturer. It would be nice if sombody who had a good experience "upgrading" to some ebay lights would communicate what auction they got them from. Thank you. That is all.
