I keep checking the weather forecast, it gets a little better everyday.
last year I only went to the spectator area somewhere between Dillard and Cherryville , it was a little on the cold side. I hope to be at the Viburnum service area this year. I will be looking for the other plates from the land of Oz. (Ahhhhs).

A. Weather was perfect.
B. Fewer cars and good weather meant fewer delays.
C. I got a speeding ticket.:(
D. I didn't care that I got a speeding ticket... :)
E. ...because I was having a good time...
F. ...like getting to drive the rally stages out of the spectator areas after the 99 car cleared the stage. heh heh
Why do they even bother still writing me tickets? I'm not going to stop driving a little faster. Oh wait, it must be the money.$$$$

You were there? I didn't see you at all. Were you only there for Saturday or what? If you were that would explain why I didn't see you since we DNF'd Friday night. :(

Thursday we towed down, and hit registration and tech. No major issues at tech, just had to repair a brake light switch that had a wire that had vibrated loose, and do a little rigging on the battery hold-down. Otherwise the car was fine. Mike Hurst pointed out a wheel bearing in the right rear that was starting to go bad, I hadn't noticed this the week before when I'd been under/around the car checking everything out. We went to bed, ready to get up Friday and race, just needed gas, hook up in-car camera, and a couple other little things.
Friday we got the stuff done, and transited down to Ellington for the Parc Expose and start of the rally. Ellington was set up very well for the first parc, and the town really seemed to be into having us there. Here's a pic from the first parc expose:

We went then to the start of stage one, it started through a low water bridge, here's 2 pics from the start of ss1 of Trepasser's Will:

(2nd one stolen from http://photobucket.com/albums/v217/rx555/100AW/?action=view¤t=100AW173.jpg)
Most of friday went fine, services were easy, just gas and go. The wheel bearing got worse as the night went on, squealing pretty badly by the end. Also the rear suspension had developed a clunking, as did the front right. The roads were great, and we ended up 4th in G5 for the day, and 14th overall out of 20 finishers (29 started). The roads were super tight, and really technical in parts, but there were a couple tastes of the stages of saturday, which were open, fast, and fun.
The only major scare of the night came on SS6 over another low water bridge listed as a single caution in the notes. Most of the instructions noted as a single caution were stuff I was able to drive right over with no problem, so I pretty much was flat out over the caution. This ended up being what could've been a very bad idea. I'm not sure of actual speeds, but we hit the LWB in upper 3rd gear after a quick decision that powering over would probably be better than slamming the brakes on. We hit the opposite side, and jackrabbited up into the air, turning slightly towards some trees. We landed fine thanks to the car's strong build, and adjusted away from the trees and were ok. The terratrip was fritzing out after this, but the car drove fine the rest of the stage.
Saturday morning we got up, checked the car/suspension for damage that we'd need to look at, gassed up, and headed to Parc Expose in downtown Salem, MO. The parc expose here was really cool, again the town seemed really into the rally and excited by the cars.
Saturday's stages were much more open and fast than Friday's, and it gave me a good chance to get more used to the car and notes. I was pushing a bit harder and feeling more comfortable as the day went on, although at this point the tires were starting to wear and lose their effectiveness. After Stage 2 there was a service, and at the end of stage 2 I noticed high temperatures. They very gradually went down on the way into service, but were still high. At this point we saw that one radiator fan wasn't working, so we jumpered it off the first that's on all the time, so both fans ran the rest of the day whenever the car was on. This helped the situation for most of the rest of the rally, and the car was running well still although the wheel bearing noise, rear suspension clunks, and front right suspension clunks were still around. We interminttently had trouble with the brake lights, but we got one working consistently and called that good since one probably burned out.
Here's a pic from the SS8 spectator point:

The second service of the day was similar to the first, car was a bit hot still, but seemed to be ok. We headed out to the last 2 stages before the last service, they went fine, service was fine, then we headed out to the last 2 stages. Temp issues were still there at this point, but seemed to be handling themselves. Stage 9 went well, first night stage of the day. I had a near spin as I was pushing hard and the tires weren't holding the road as they had before, but I was able to keep them under control and backed off a bit to keep it under control and on the road. Transit to SS10 was fine, as was SS10. I backed off a bit on 10 because I didn't feel the tires were gripping well enough to keep pushing at the level I had been, but still managed a semi-decent time. At the finish of SS10, the temp climbed up and was near the top of the temp gauge. We got onto the transit, hoping the temps would come back down with a bit of air over the radiator, but they kept climbing. We overheated, and were unable to cool the car down in any way, it wasn't cooling at all.
At this point, Mike Wray and John Nordlie pulled up in their PGT Legacy GT, and offered us a tow, which saved our rally. We can't thank them enough for pulling us in, we'd have DNF'ed on the last transit without their help. We had about 25 miles to flat-tow, and not much time, so the tow was a bit interesting to say the least, but we both made it in time (barely). Saturday we finished 13th overall out of 24(maybe 23) finishers, and 4th in G5 again.
Thanks to everybody that helped out, Travis Kriza did a great job of codriving. It was my first rally with notes, and he did a good job of easing me into them. By the end of the rally I felt really comfortable with him and notes, I can't wait for another opportunity to use them.
Thanks to Eric Wort, Micah Fedke, and Chad Eixenberger for crewing, they all did an awesome job and their help is really appreciated. Also thanks to organizers/workers for putting on the event, and thanks to locals for the support.
All in all, and awesome event, awesome time. Now here's my short list of things to fix:
-headgasket? head?
-rear right wheel bearing
-rear suspension clunks
-front right suspension clunks
-redo radiator fan wiring (its pretty ghetto now)
-terratrip wiring
-brake light wires/checking
-hazard lights stopped working
-new brake rotors/pads
-new tires (these are completely shot, like barely 1/4" tread left on the rears)
Thats about it...

Not passing judgment, but you should be aware that spectators caught speeding and driving recklessly are one of the top concerns rally organizers have and one of the top reasons rallies don't get approved in subsequent years by local administrative authorities.
Please don't speed at rallies.

fyi, we have one particular local state trooper that's out to get us rally-types so he'll write you up for just about anything. I only bring it up cuz I'm on the committee and got one too (64 in a 55) as did a lot of our workers and it won't really affect our future.
But in general I do agree about speeding at rallies.

Did you guys look at the date of my first post?:)
Speeding: Well, I guess I was exceeding the posted speed limit but I wasn't in a hurry. That's mostly why I got caught. I was just concentrating on driving, not looking down at my speedo. I'd rather "look down the road" and not hit anything and get the occasional ticket because there is only one rule when it comes to driving: DON'T HIT ANYTHING!!!:D
Think about it. All of the laws in the books stem from that rule. Some laws are far removed from the #1 rule. My violation was for covering too big of a distance in too short of a time, which may or may not have...well it didn't...resulted in my hitting something. SOMETHING!?!? Of course the cop had no way of measuring my speed. He used a radar or lidar to measure distances and compare them to time. Both values that my ticket were based on were extremely tiny. So, basically, I was ticketed because I covered a too many inches in a fraction of a second. The State Trooper knew the speed that the radar gun displayed, but did he know how long I was speeding...or for how many miles?
Did the radar/llidar measure the same spot of the car? No. That's almost impossible. Add to that both cars were moving and were not moving directly towards each other. How does the radar/lidar gun know how fast it is moving? ...the police car's speedo? One thing is for sure, the cop doesn't really know fast I was going any more than I do.
You all know how nice the weather was. So, do you think a WRX with near slick Azenis, swaybars, DMS 50's on pavement with a driver in his mid 30's who drives for a living could pretty much avoid hitting something? Something?:D

I saw searchin' the web the other day, for stuff on the 100 acre wood , and I stumbled onto a discussion board called " the conservation cafe". I am a big fan of rally racing in general , and the 100 acre wood in particular. But it seems some of the folks over there are not. Just thought someone might like to know what anti-rally people are complaining about.

Also , I have made a yahoo group with pics from the 100 acre wood.

I read some of the first page that the ANTI-rally locals posted. They don't care much for outsiders, do they? While I agree with some of their concerns about not being notified, they really should start to expect this towards the end of February. I mean...it IS a national championship. How many other national championships do they have down there around Salem in late February?!?!
I sensed a lot of negativity towards "flatlanders" and "touristas". Hey, I'm a Missourian too...and I bet I pay more money in taxes per year to fix MO state highways than a lot of them. That doesn't even include the "donation" I'm going to make to their county courthouse for being a naughty motorist.
Maybe I'll just have to stop going down there and spending money every winter. :furious:

Just posted a response as an organizer too. I organize in Texas, not 100 Acre Wood. One thing I did not say but wanted to is that spectators are one of our biggest problems. As competitors and organizers, we know how hard it is to get road use permission. A casual spectator probably doesn't. See the warning about speeding above. When you go spectate, please be respectful of the land and people. Unlike NASCAR, no one here is making loads of money to pay for your enjoyment. But also, you are not spending the money to spectate like you were at a NASCAR event.
Rally on!
Rally on!

Richard,
I read your post over at the Conservation Cafe, I thought it was low key and respectful ( esp. when compared to the other post there). I will be checkin back in there to see what kind of responses it stirs up.

The rally takes place once a year and doesn't affect that many people, so they had to wait twenty minutes to get to their cabin. Big freaking deal. Some people just want to bitch about something, especially people who don't like outsiders to begin with.
Rick, I also want to clarify something. As one of those "wannabe rally racers from STLSUBARU.COM" as you so eloquently put, we were going to enjoy ourselves on private land with the owner's permission. Ergo you're off base. Not that it matters anymore but at least get the facts straight if you're going to sling poo.

I know what you mean, Cheesecake got me pretty fired up( no idea how to spell rielled up). I was tempted to let 'er rip. But my knowledge of what really goes on in the rally is very limited ( i.e. figured I should speak of what I saw and knew myself).
Like I said there, I just saw the cars coming into Viburnum and Viburnum service area.
When I saw 'em they were slow and quiet, ( yes , I was a little dissapointed, but I know they have to keep a low profile on the paved roads , and esp. in the city limit).
I spoke to some of the drivers and crew in the Viburnum service area. They didn't seem at all like the kind of people spoke of at the Conservation Cafe. Very friendy and calm. I remember the 'vette crew appeared making rallying a family affair, as I figure others teams may do also. even the "foriegners" were friendly. I hope Viburnum is on the route next year.

Faast, would you please PM me with the details of which you speak. People cutting ruts on someone's land with that persons permission is okay but can be seen by others as a bad thing. If you can explain to me, I will help you put it in words for the organizing committee to use with the county comissioners. No insult intended here by implying you can't write well, I am a newsletter editor in addition to supporting my bad habits by engineering.
And by the way, showing off in public around a rally is part of our problem with spectators. Even the million dollar NASCAR spectators don't get "Get our\t of jail Free" cards. They just get arrested but the NASCAR events are big enough that a few or even several idiots won't cause the city fathers to shut down the event. Rally is not that big yet.

I did my absolute best to not drive like an asshat within proximity to the rally. Driving 5 mph in downtown Ellington, staying within the speed limit elsewhere, not abusing gravel roads etc. I fully understand the problem with spectators acting like asshats but to be honest, I saw more local kids acting dumb on Friday than I did spectators.
Richard, I was not the one organizing the trip down there but I can put you in contact with the person who was. Most people on STLSUBARU.COM understood the gravity of the situation and would not have done anything to put it into jeopardy. We had a couple of who I assume to be 100AW organizers visit us(the website) and exhange a few heated words. I believe that situation was resolved long before the rally started but as I stated, we ended up not going down there so it wasn't much of an issue.

Hi Richard,
I met a guys from Texas ( he was not a long tall Texan, or any other Texas sterotypes I can think of),as the rally came thru Viburnum. He was a radio guy, in a shiny black sti. I didn't catch his name, but he did let us take a picture with him, nice guy. I have his picture here, he is the one in the bright green vest.

And by the way, Jerry was the one who did most of the work cleaning up the service areas. His official title was Service Shepherd.

I just want to say thanks for taking time to go those who are unhappy with the event and try to work it out so the situation is less tense in the future. Usually most people write off the sometimes very loud minority. Definitely a classy thing to do.

I think Richard made some real progress over at the conservation cafe.
I think he won a few of them over, but I am still waiting to hear from
"Cheesecake".

Yes, thanks to Richard, its good to have a well spoken individual speak for our group to help explain some of the problems to them.
If I weren't 8 hours away I'd go pick up the trash myself.

I just got an e-mail from Kim, chairman of the rally. He appreciates hearing of problems so he at least isn't blind sided at meetings with the county commissioners.
Aspera,
I posted a few messages at the conservation cafe. Did you have any DIFFICULTIES figuring out who I was there?

cheesecake? :D
Rocketman, right? If not, I thought Rocketman was pretty funny. I forget...who made the "under the influence of what?....damn women?" post. That was

I'm just glad my car didn't get towed like at ROTW....
I think the rally went very well (from my POV). All you have to do is think about the ones that DIDN'T go well to put it into perspective. Let the chairman and all of the workers know that they get a gold star from this spectator.

Don,
It is for my own enjoyment. 100AW is the next closest rally to me other than the ones I organize. That 1200 mile tow to Minnesota is a killer.

Of course ,you quessed who I was,
speaking of Cheesecake tho... she started that thread at the conservation cafe, but I don't think she has made a post since she responded to me with something like " I pick my friends better than that" when I told her she might volunteer to be a road marshall. I wonder where she went. I know my excuse for being offline for a few days, I went to Liberal, you know , that part of KS that is in Oklahoma, but is looking more like Mexico.
