1st Annual NASA National Results, The Rivalry Part 3 Video

NASA HPDE 4/race, NASA Nationals at Mid-Ohio Raceway
Sept 13-16 2006
No rest for the weary.
Soon after successfully completing the Ultimate Street Car Challenge #5, we headed out to Lexington, Ohio, for the 1st Annual National Auto Sport Associations (NASA) National Championship. This inaugural event brought over 250 competitors from all over the United States. Of those 250, Crawford Performances 2004 Subaru Sti Wide body, captured a 2nd place in class and 4th overall in the time trail series with a 1:35.662.

So thats the quick version? What everyone always wants to see and here is the drama. So lets get to it!
As with any National Championship, there was bound to be a fair amount of competition. This event was no different. Some of the competitors included a Shannon Race Car, a Caterham Super 7, several Corvette Z06s, a few 2.3 liter EVO's, and the home-town favored AMS EVO.
The Crawford Performance Widebody STi was equipped with our CP35R Turbo Kit, stock 2.5 Sti longblock, full interior, 450whp / 410wtq and weighing in at a comfortable 3388lbs. Though this is the same set-up which we have raced throughout several events, this was the first time that driver, Dr. Russ Warr, had set foot on the Mid-Ohio racetrack. To make this event even more interesting, Mother Nature decided to throw a little rain our way. Great.
Now here we are in a State none of us have ever been to, on a track we have never seen, and with Mother Nature seemingly taunting us to try and get a decent track time, and people expect us to race? Oh hell yeah! This is what racing is all about, to succeed in the face of adversity.
The first two cool and wet days of practice were spent making many adjustments to the car. But then there came the third day. With a few donuts in our bellys and coffee on our shirts, we were ready to reap the benefits of all our changes. The first session came and went, but not without another a special present from the race gods. BOOMout goes the rear diff. With no spares, and miles away from home, all we could do for the rest of the day was wait, watch as our standings fall as competitors improved their times and eat stale donuts.
Stale donuts and cold coffee are good for a few things; one, feeding your depression and two, having alone time in the restroom. But, as many of us know, the restroom can be a great thinking place. A simple phone call back to the shop in CA, where luckily, some staff were still milling about, a few tools, a few parts, a little time, a great overnight shipping service and a diff was on its way!
We received the diff at 9:00am the next day, a Saturday, which just so happened to be the 4th and final day of competition. So with a little time, a little elbow grease, a little luck and thankfully, no more donuts, we jumped into the first session. Now it was up to Dr. Russ to put us back in the standings.
True to form, Dr. Russ Warr did not disappoint us. He drove his fastest and best lap time which placed us 2nd in class and 4th overall running a 1:35.662. Sure it wasnt as fast as he thought he could drive the car, nor did we take a first place, but we rose to the occasion in the face of adversityand thats what racing is all about.
It was a great experience being involved in the first ever National NASA event. We were quite surprised to see so many people come to participate and support this event, but even more-so that so many people have never seen or heard of Subaru. I guess they will remember us and Subaru now. Russ Warr, Driver

Yes I was.
That lap for me was a 1:35.6 over a second slower than my best had been that morning. I do not consider it a good example of a lap, being on cold(er) tires, and stuff going wrong in the car, but I love the View, Daddio and I have actually been going over it to see how the car is behaving.

Nice video, Mid-Ohio is a great track.
Just my observations, for a freaking FAST car, it sure seems that you could atleast put on fire protection stuff and what not, but oh well. Also, that STi looked like a blast to drive. I thought that a lot of the lines were off and the driving didnt look all that smooth, kinda brute and unrefined. It sure looked like a good bit of time could have been made up by smoothing out and getting the line down. I am not an expert or whatever, just observing... good job on making a freaking fast car and promoting the subie community :D

It seemed that the Evo was having some snap oversteer issues. Not a flame or anything, just an observation. Jon, what went wrong with the car?

congrats to both cars! fast sti for being full weight/full interior! good job to both drivers.

Good observation actually.. Daddio noticed the same thing and called me asking about it.
Situation was this, to take some of the corner-exit push away, I dialed in some toe-out in the back. On cool tires, it would be a bit snappy. The first session we had it like that the first hot lap was very tricky.. I thought i was in the drift contest through turns 6-7-8. (My GF actually called me a "show-off" on the radio.
What we are seeing on this video is me making sure it didn't get away from me at all, so yep it looks funny. You notice that as the actual hot lap goes on, it gets less and less. With hot tires, the bit of toe-out felt great.
At the start of lap two, you hear the car misfire, and see I had to pull off. The alternator was dead and at the time I thought it was the battery not giving enough juice and the car misfiring, I didn't want to mess up Russ, so I tried to get out of his way the best I could.
I will say that anytime Russ wants to follow us around he can, the video is a good learning tool. :)

ahh, right on. Though I know little about suspension mods and how they effect handling stuff, the slight toe-out in the rear would make sense...helping to bring the back out.
| racerjon1 | 09-25-2006 02:57 PM |
Yea it was funny, Daddio called me and said "wth is going on with the car, I can't figure out what would make it do that unless you are just stopping the slide early" Once I looked at the video closer, I am sure that was it.
After almost spinning the run before, and not really wanting to show Russ the fast way around anyway.. I wasn't being so showy with it. :D
There are some other issues going on mid corner, but we think those are aero related, and are working on a fix.

So, is the rivalry part 4 gonna be at GTlive?
| racerjon1 | 09-25-2006 03:18 PM |
Probably Super Street West Coast Championships. Not sure if they will haul the car to the east coast for GT Live.
However.. There should be a quick Subaru at GT Live, along with the GSC Evo, the AMS Evo with Mark Daddio driving, the GSC Supra, and the Silvia that was overall winner at the Summit Point Redline event.
(and if anyone wants there car driven, i will probably bring my helmet and gear :D )

It would be nice if the Gtlive website would list the entries. So far all they show is the cyberevo, btz601r zerosports sti, and the super autobacs s2000. It would be cool to know who actually is planning on being there. It should be some serious competition though with those 3, plus the one's that Jon listed above.
| racerjon1 | 09-25-2006 03:59 PM |
Yea, the registration list is off.. that and I was told the Cyber Evo wouldn't be there after it was listed on the site..
The GT live guys said "The Cyber Evo will not come back to the states until its records are threatened" Yet there it is on the list.

Cyber Evo has many years of R&D, so suspension is well tuned, engine is said to be putting down 600HP, and the car is said to be 2500 lbs. throw in dogbox, 60/40 diff, tuned aero, etc..
All of which is doable for an Evo, and realiably so. We (AMS) might have something for them but we will have to see.

Street car is debateable. License plate: check. Registered: check Drive it on the street: check. Street car.. uh.. not for anyone but the craziest of us.
Last year SCC had an AMS customer car in the event, so this year I think they gave Robi the shot at being the big gun Evo.

Yes, I am happy to hear it.:) I thought you knew my sig. lol. I am not so sure that we will have enough for them this time around. We should have the horsepower, but still need the 60/40 diff, and a bunch of weight out of the car. Not to mention a bit more chassis tuning. But you never know, we could always pull an upset. :D

Yeah I forgot they had to be street cars. I would street the AMS evo lol and love every second. I am sure it is loud as hell being completely striped and probably kills the kidneys on bumps but performance has its trade offs. One being creature comforts.

Oh yea.. loud as crap, and not just loud but penetrating. After One Lap i was not feeling well for a few days, and I am sure it had to do with noise and vibration and sleeping in that car for a week.
The car is actually not that rough over bumps.. well, compared to most cars anyway. The Ohlins we have on the car now actually handle the bumps pretty well, and make for a better ride than many off the shelf coilovers I have driven around on with less spring rates. (The DSP setup in the 2.5 RS last year with Rankins on the Teins was much more rough a ride)
Mark, I don't know why I forgot the SN on here, I think I noticed it but didn't connect it. (comes from doing homework and posting to message boards at the same time)

I had a 1:34.3 :D
Thank you though, it is a hell of a track.. tough to learn, harder to get right. Russ was hustling his *** off to make that "heavy" STi go as well, he was the fastest true street car for sure.
The funniest part of the video for me is that first time through 1 hot.. I carried a bit of speed in and was kicking myself for missing the apex in the car.. then I get back and watch the video and see Russ blew it as well.. can't say we wern't trying.

For sure.. Now that I know the video was going, I really wish the car hadn't broke, cause it would have been a great research tool.. can't wait to play again.

Matt,
Yes we run TGV deletes in our STI. Here is a rundown of the mods to our current motor package which is based on a stock STI long block.
CP TGV deletes
CP35R turbo kit.
APS front mount.
225 fuel pump.
720cc injectors.
CP air/oil separator.
CP cat back exhaust system.
CP oil cooler kit.
And the most important piece of the puzzle,,, I-Speed ECU tuning. ;)

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
TGV delegates are a great mod even on a totally stock setup.

Hi Matt,
William Knose here, it was good to put a name with a face and if you do have any more questions about the EcuTeK do let us know. We are also offering the EasyECU which allows you to upload multiple maps created by us, so there is no need to mail your ECU to us anymore. Even better if you are at the race track, rally event (have internet access) and need a little fine tuning we can do it over e-mail.
Cheers,
Team Crawford Performance / I-Speed USA
