WRX aluminum dash kit part 1

1984 03-16-2002 10:15 PM

WRX aluminum dash kit

Does anyone here now where i could find a REAL aluminum dash trim kit for the WRX? I've got some deep chunks cut in the piece around the cup holder and it's really starting to get on my nerves. Also if anyone would know where i could just get a new dash piece to replace my messed up one, i'd rather do that.
Hazdaz 03-17-2002 12:02 PM

If ya find a place that has a dash that looks more like brushed AL, let me know too. The silver dash is nice, but brushed AL is my favorite.
avonrex 03-17-2002 12:44 PM

You could try here I don't know if that's what you're looking for or not.
Hazdaz 03-17-2002 05:52 PM

Maybe thats what 1984 was lookin for, but I have always found those "dash kits" look like a munch of cheesy stickers. Ofcourse thats just my opinion.
6Pack 03-17-2002 06:36 PM

I'd try woodtrim.com. I bought their real aluminum kit for my previous car, very impressed with it. You definitely want to take your time putting it in, it's not as easy as the plastic ones. Pay close attention to any curves and make sure everything sits perfect around all curves before you apply.
Jsunn 03-17-2002 11:29 PM

I just bought....

The aluminum dash trim kit from Miratrim.....I won it on e-bay and it should be arriving in a few days. I was kinda leary, but I said what the hell and went for it. :D

here is a copy of the kit.

I'll try and post some pics after I get it installed.

Their website is www.miratrim.com

Hey Jsunn, something like that is exactly what i'm looking for. I don't think it's real aluminum, but if it looks nice, oh well. Please post those pics when you get that kit installed
Frederf 03-19-2002 04:08 AM

I've seen a place that sells a titanium dash kit
Jsunn 03-19-2002 08:54 AM

It is just...

Simulated aluminum. It seems pretty hight quality though, they use 3m adhesive that covers the entire back of the trim piece and the kit comes with a warranty. I am hoping to get it soon and will post pics as soon as I get it installed.

The Ti kit is sold by the first company listed in this thread. I like the one from miratrim (in theory) because the have pieces for the clock and the overhead light.

Carbon fiber????

Could anyone suggest a website where I can order a real carbon fiber dash kit? Anyone have any pics they can post? Thanks in advance for responses.
Jsunn 03-19-2002 09:13 AM

check woodtrim.com

I was just looking at their site and they do have genuine CF, in a few different colors too.

-J
Hazdaz 03-19-2002 11:39 AM

I hope that anyone that actually installs one of these, posts pics. I seriously can't picture it looking that good on our cars. If you noticed, the cars in the pics on those site all had a fairly flat dash. Our dash is defintily not flat - its got edges and multiple sufaces. On the flat dashes - think something like a Maxima or Dodge Intrepid - it probably looks real good (like the ones in the pix), cuz its basically one piece of plastic/AL/CF. Any one for the WRX either is not going to totaly cover the existing trim, or is going to have like 50 pieces all joined togather - seams all over the place. I hope I'm wrong.
So if you haven;t bought one of these already, ya might want to keep this in mind. If you have bought it, please send those pix.
Jejunum 03-19-2002 03:37 PM

hey Jsunn do post some pics im really interested in how it looks

outta curiousity (if u dont mind) how much was thie al kit?
Jsunn 03-19-2002 03:58 PM

I got it on e-bay....

the kit cost me 155 plus shipping. Which seems pretty comparable to the other kits out there.

I think you can contact miratrim direct and get one from them instead of on e-bay.

-J
speedrkj 03-19-2002 07:15 PM

Please post pics as soon as you install I saw the kits on Ebay for 155.00.... Not too sure about the kit being stickers curious what it will look like....

Thanks

just got an e-mail...

...from Rob at Miratrim, he said my kit shipped last Thursday and should be here either this Thursday or Friday.

I have a photo of the AL trim kit on another car that he sent me, if you are curiose I could sent it to you or if you can post it here that would be great. I don't have anyplace to host the images.

jcblack 03-20-2002 01:22 AM

yep, someone post one of these kits as soon as they can! I'm only really interested in AL on the parts that are silver now.

NOTHING beats the real thing. I was looking at a bmw 325ci (i think) one day and the Aluminum on the interior BLEW ME AWAY. Very nice. SOLID.
In2Deep 03-20-2002 04:29 AM

Could you post those pics on this thread too please!
StevieD 03-20-2002 08:18 AM

I have a stock dash kit (aluminum) from a '02 WRX. $80 or best offer if someone wants it. Never used.
speedrkj 03-20-2002 01:10 PM

Here is a picture that Jsunn emailed me doesnt really show too much... We all want to see the kit installed in your wrx... Please take picture of the kit before you install it ....

Thanks

CHALLENGER1: Well if you sell that kit, then post some pix for us. Actually post ALOT of pix for us to see it (and zoom in too, so we can see some detail). :D
Jsunn 03-20-2002 06:31 PM

no prob....

speedrkj,

I'll get several pics of the kit when I get it before, during, and after the install. I don't have a place to host them so I'll have to e-mail them to someone to post.

-J
Jejunum 03-20-2002 06:54 PM

yah and start a group buy :)
gossamer_monster 03-20-2002 09:09 PM

I find it weird that some many people are selling these kits but not one web site has pictures of it installed on a WRX.

Need close ups too.

speedrkj 03-20-2002 10:40 PM

Email the pictures I can host them for you....
speedrkj 03-23-2002 11:17 AM

Sure did get quiet did you get the kit yet??? Pictures??

In2Deep 03-23-2002 01:53 PM

They make a kit just like it, in all Carbon Fiber. That one should be cool too! ;)
samowrx 03-23-2002 02:08 PM

i hate how every kit has some different pieces. like the first link didn't have the driver and passenger vents and the miratrim one doesn't have the bezzel around the fog light button. y can't they all just put every piece in?
speedrkj 03-23-2002 08:58 PM

Jsunn did you get the kit yet???? Havent heard anything from you in a few days??

Jsunn 03-24-2002 02:41 AM

still waiting...

speedrkj,

I'm still waiting, I sent an e-mail on Friday asking whether or not it was shipped UPS or USPS, and Rob from Miratrim said it was shipped USPS and I should recieve it by this Thursday at the latest, quote un-quote. I was really hoping to have it in by this weekend so I could install it. I am annoyed to say the least. Again, all I can say is that I will send you the pics as soon as I get the kit. Hopefulyl it will be sooner than later.

Jsunn 03-25-2002 08:47 PM

finally got the kit!!

Ok, I finally got my kit I won on e-bay from Miratrim. I have installed about 80% of it and it looks pretty good. I think it might take me a few days to get used to the difference. I think it really dresses up the interior of the car though!

Yes they are still stickers but you have to be looking really close to tell. All of the peices I installed were a perfect fit. This is including the radio covers and center console pieces. I was worried about the thinkness of the pieces, they were only about 2mm at the most and don't stick out at you.

I know, I know  you all want pictures. They are on the way. I cannot host images on a web site so I e-mailed speedrjk. I am sure they will get posted as soon as the e-mail is received.

I am going to finish installing the kit tomorrow afternoon, and I will take some more pictures for you all to see. Please feel free to ask me any questions that you may have about the kit.

Rob at Miratrim was a pleasure to do buisness with and he always answered my questions quickly. I have not seen any other trim kits before but, based on this one, I would recommend it.

and that's all I have to say about that.

Hazdaz 03-25-2002 09:16 PM

Dude, thanks for the update there, but ya gotta take some pics during the day - that flash is shinying off the 'stickers' and making it real hard ot see what they REALLY look like. also need some closeup too.
thanks.
Jsunn 03-25-2002 10:31 PM

I'll get some more pics tomorrow

I'll take some more pics tomorrow. The camera I am using isn't that great, so I can't really promise you some good close ups. As you can probably tell becuase my seats look purple.

I am very happy with the kit. I just went for a drive to check it out under the better lighting of the supermarket parking lot. It looks pretty sweet!

The stickers look like brushed aluminum, I mean they REALLY do! They have a clear shiney plastic over the top, that is what gives the sticker its thickness along with the 3m adhesive stuff. (about 2mm)

Just take your time placing the pieces as they are a PITA to move if you screw up.
As you can probably tell becuase my seats look purple.
wow and here i (seriously) thought that they were special custom (purple!!??!) seats. i was just thinking to myself; well whatever floats ur boat
-=Ph/\t WRX=- 03-26-2002 12:08 AM

I had them in my '99 Miata, the quality is ok. It doesn't look realistic, it's like a thin aluminum film with a clear plastic layer on top. Flimsy material and will peel up depending on the weather conditions you live in. But what do you expect, they don't cost much to begin with.
Pat Green 03-26-2002 01:49 AM

Well, someone has to say it.... Bling Bling. J/K, actually, it looks really nice. I'd get it if my car didn't come with the fake C/F installed.
Jsunn 03-26-2002 04:40 PM

More photos....

Alright, First off, I DON"T have purple seats!!

ok, I finished installing the kit and I think it all goes very well with the interior of the car. I have sent the pics I took to speedrjk to he can post them.

I Screwed up the clock piece... A corner touched down inadvertently and when I went to pull it up I put a crease in the surface. I wrote miratrim about getting a replacement part, I'll let you know what happens with that. There were cuss words to be had by all.

I think it all looks great, the only pieces that I am not crazy about and will probably remove are the pieces on the glove box and glove box key hole. These just don't sit flush with anything and kinda look out of place.

I do like the piece around the guage bezel and the clock piece looked pretty good, except for the crease, before I pulled it up. I tell you that 3M adhesive stuff should probably be used to hold the stace station together, because once it is on, it's not coming off.

If you have any questions please let me know, and only positive comments on the trim shall be read. :p

trhoppe 03-26-2002 05:02 PM

Well IMHO it looks pretty good, but I would probably not do it. I do really like the door pieces, but not a big fan of the e-brake and shifter area. Is it as yellow as the pics make it seem or is it just the camera? Is it something that I could get the door pieces and those would match the stock radio surround?
Hazdaz 03-26-2002 11:03 PM

JSUNN - holy crap are those seats purple
Do you have a problem with the calibration on the camara or was it when/if you re-touched the pix in Photoshop or something?

Anyyways, from the PIX they look pretty good. I hope someone in the CT area gets that kit so I could see it upclose and personal.
I also do agree w/ you that some of those pieces are kinda overkill/not needed. IF you do decide to take them off WATCHOUT with that 3M tape its REALLY sticky (as you already found out). I still don;t think I would get it, but atleast its different, ya know? ANd if your happy thats the ONLY thing that matters.

Anyone else get this kit and has pix?
Hazdaz 03-26-2002 11:11 PM

Hey guys - I just thought of something (right after I posted that last message).
OK, the stock trim on the WRX looks basically like silver-colored plastic, cuz basically thats EXACTLY what it is. BUT, do you guys think it might look better (i.e. more 'substancial'/'expensive'/'special') if ya clear-coated that plastic trim to make it look real shiny?? Like the kit that JSUNN just put on is basically a THIN piece of AL with a shiny plastic over it to protect it.
I'm beginin to think that the stock trim would look good with a shiny layer of laquer over it (I think it would look more like a part thats made of AL with clear coat to protect it - like a set of rims versus a plastic part thats painted grey/silver). It would probably look more "expensive" and not as cheap.

Am I crazy or what?... ok, wait, i AM crazy, but what do you guys think????
mexicanpizza 03-27-2002 12:12 PM

Hey guys...long time lurker first time poster....

I've been looking at these kits on ebay and around the net for a while, and as you've all said there are NO decent pics of a kit installed. What I'm wondering and perhaps Jsunn can clarify...I realize these are adhesive backed aluminum pieces...but are the ones that mimic the radio surround just stuck on top of the stock plastic surround? By definition that has to look pretty crappy

I really want a true replacement aluminum kit for all those pieces...guess I'm dreaming... =]
iatacs19 03-27-2002 01:27 PM

you don't have to install the whole kit actually. i would install the door trims and the dash, but not the area where the gear box and parking break are. :)

looks nice though.
Jsunn 03-27-2002 01:37 PM

Radio pieces....

Mexicanpizza,

I was kind of concerned about the radio pieces myself. I think the thing that save these pieces from looking really cheap is that they bring the radio face flush with the surrounding black trim on the center console. All of the holes fro the dials and the buttons all lined up very good. I think there are pieces that look really good and other, not so much, the radio falls into the not so much catergory. But, IMO it looks better than the stock.
(keep in mind that this is a semi permanent mod, in th fact that adhesive is super strong. So I am almost forced to like they way it looks  )

Also, I contacted miratrim about the part I hosed up and they are going to send out a new one at no cost to me save shipping. I thought that was very cool and they have been a great seller.

As far as not installing the whole kit, I agree with that. Like I mentioned before, I think I might try and remove the glove box stuff. If the radio trim starts to bug me, I might just remove that too. I do really like the other pieces, the interior of the wrx just seemed so drab in the all black molding and the missing/blank buttons every where IMHO.

Well, I aperciate all of your comments on the kit and hoefully this will give others an idea of different options for the interior of the car. Some one had to be the first one, I guess it'll be me.

i cannot believe that the pictures do not work. i have yet to see one picture of this kit installed in a wrx. why were the pictures taken down? and why weren't the pictures just uploaded to the i-club so they would stay? if anyone reads this and has pictures to post, please help me out, i'd really like to see the miratrim kit. thanks.
Jsunn 05-12-2002 09:58 PM

Eric M...

The car is mine. I don't have a place to post the pics so I e-mailed them to speedrjk to post. he has since taken them down. I still have the images if you would like to see them.

Overall I am pretty happy with the kit. Like I mentioned before, I don't like the pieces on the glove box but everything else looks pretty good. I do definitly like the pieces on the center console around the shifter.

The kit does have a very, very slight yellow tint to it from the reisin they put over the simulated AL, but it isn't bad. Just have to accept that for the price. I have received a lot of positive feedback from others. (they could just be saying that to be nice though :D )

Just let me know if you want me to e-mail the pictures.
