1st Lightwerkz Sti bugeye retrofit installed! part 1

1st Lightwerkz Sti bugeye retrofit installed!
Mods, if this belongs in another forum feel free to move it. I thought I'd post up here since it's an awesome exterior mod some other bugeye owners might want to look into.

I was the first test mule for a retrofit into an STi bugeye headlight for Lightwerkz. And unfortunately with being the first, there is that risk that things might not go as planned...but I am glad to say that after a slight hiccup I did get the results I wanted. I know that Lightwerkz (Caesar) posted up the progress/results in another thread (click here) back in November, but I was not able to install the lights when I received them back then due to a slight projector aiming issue. After discussing it over with Caesar, he knew how to resolve the issue, so the lights went back to him for the fix. Being the busy guy that he is, I said there was no rush on the lights, but he was able to squeeze me in and get everything fixed sooner than I was anticipating. Fast foward to yesterday afternoon (12/14). My lights arrived, and after installing them and aiming the cutoff, I am proud to say that I am the owner of the 1st Lightwerkz STi Bugeye TSX Projector* retrofit. (*color modded)

Before I post the pics though, I'd like to say that Caesar's went above and beyond what I'd call outstanding customer service. I sent numerous PM's to him regarding his retrofitting process, and he answered all of my questions, not only in a timely manner, but also quite thoroughly. Through the whole retrofitting process, upon receiving the lights the first time, through the aiming fix, and upon receiving my lights the second time, Caesar stayed in communication with me the entire time to ensure my satisfaction. If that's not great customer service I don't know what is. Now that his first sti bugeye is out of the way, I'm sure he's figured out all the kinks that come with working with an entirely new headlight for the first time. So those who have been considering a retrofit into their sti bugeye headlights, I highly recommend checking out Lightwerkz to have this mod done. Work is top notch, but more impressive, his customer service is awesome. Thanks a bunch Caesar!

Now on to the pictures....

The lights prior to installation and aiming.

Cutoff against a wall. As you can see, the light output is very smooth and even below it. Very wide too!

Color modded! For the hardcore HID peep. haha

Shining down the backside of a building.

Pic from the opposite angle to show that cutoff on the driver's side isn't high and blinding oncoming traffic.

Light output on a dark neighborhood street from the driver's perspective.

Because of the whole aiming issue, Caesar hooked me up with these LED bulbs to test out on my headlights. :D I thought they complimented the HIDs really well, so I highly recommend picking a pair up from him.

And last but not least, here's a comparison pic between all the headlights I've owned showing the difference in light output (w/ HID kits put into two halogen projectors). Yes, these are actual pics of my own headlights when I owned them at the time. My friends think I'm crazy for owning as many lights as I have. LOL I think I'm done now finally.

Note on STi EDMs: Horrid light output beneath the cutoff with huge blackholes. I did use cheap 6000k bulbs, so that made my light output even worse.
Note on UK300/Prodrives: Better light output beneath the cutoff. Yet, light output is still more concentrated towards the center of each projector, and not as wide as I was hoping it would be.
Note on STi TSX Retrofit: Much better cutoff, and light output beneath it is smooth, even, and very wide. Retrofit pic was done with two pics being merged together in Photoshop to show how wide the projectors shoot out.

Edit:
Shout outs to...
quadzilla (Brian) for the JDM STI HID lights
RezaLaleh (Reza) for the v7 HID ballasts
Lightwerkz (Caesar) for the TSX Projectors, bulbs, and awesome retrofit.

quadzilla 12-16-2006 08:33 AM

Well after seeing this, I think I am going to put my edm's up for sale and go with a retro fit....too bad I sold you that brand new set of hid's hahaha. I am amazed actually at how well they came out.....now just to put in a 50w kit in instead of the 35s......

Good job again!!
LightWerkz 12-16-2006 10:22 AM

Wow, nice pics and comparison. These are going into my gallery for sure! :)

You can really tell the difference between dropping in an HID conversion kit, and the real thing (TSX Retrofit)

The output on the EDM w/ 6000k kit had two large hot spots, gross!

The cutoff on the UK lights is actually nice, but it doesnt seem to go wide AT ALL.

Now with the TSX you can clearly see its sharp, intense, and does go much wider then the others.

Sure is a large difference between all the other sets of lights youve had, and I believe youll be sticking with this one for while ;)

Very nice harness system you have there too!

Damn those have alot of color when you come close to the wall like that! Awesome man....I'm really happy with the outcome, as I am sure you are too!
Arnie 12-16-2006 11:13 AM

Awesome RJ! This is the ideal combo. I hated my EDM STi's with a passion with how pathetic the optics were. I sold them within a week of having them. I think they are the best looking option for the bug-eye but I wasn't going to give up on light quality just for aesthetics. My UK300's have been a much better solution in both halogen and HID (as you can see above) but it no contest to real HID optics. But the cost of a Hella HID unit is a bit much so I won't be going there. This solution is truly the ideal. Hmm, maybe I'll bring back another set of EDM's when I visit Germany...

However, the big daddy setup would be a bi-xenon setup from a BMW/Benz.
robbieshonda 12-16-2006 11:19 AM

nice looking setup.
Rapid_Roo 12-16-2006 01:28 PM

wow that looks great. :D

if somone would be so kinda as to PM me info on this project, cost and time frame. I have a some HID ballasts and bulbs laying around that need new homes. I even have the ballast and ignitors from a STi, just no bulbs.

also on this set up, what type of bulb is in the high beam?

thanks in advance,

RR :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I spent a little time last night just driving around with them, which is why I posted so late. :D

I just bought some plain old Sylvania 9005 bulb you can get an any auto parts store. :) If you're referring to the parking light bulb, it's an LED. I guess PM Lightwerkz for more details about it.
4wdrift 12-16-2006 02:31 PM

Wow! What a difference!
It's always a plus being able to see at night
Nicely done setup. If only headlamp setups came this way.
WhiteFox 12-16-2006 02:53 PM

**** thats like the perfect amount of color in the cutoff.

I have those same LEDs in my housings too, really takes away that gross yellow.
sevendhappy 12-16-2006 08:11 PM
Very nice harness system you have there too!
Thanks! Yeah, that harness allows me to power on both the HIDs/Hi-beams at the same time w/o overloading the stock wiring since it was not designed for HIDs like the '04-'06 STI's. I wanted everything Plug & Play so there's no cutting of the stock wires on the car. Other than finding grounding points on the car for the relays & ballasts, attaching the fuse wires to the positive battery terminal, and mounting the ballasts somewhere (which I already had a spot for)...everything else is pretty much click-click-click w/ a few connectors, and the lights are installed. :)

No hole cutting into the back of my headlight housing as I'm using all OEM wires since this housing was made for HIDs. w00t! for a clean look. haha

Thanks Max. :D Yeah, if you have any questions about it, just PM me. Wouldn't this be the wrong cutoff for you though considering where you're living right now? :p
mhl23 12-24-2006 10:55 PM

how much did it cost you?
and did they mout the ballasts on the housing?
or they only put the hid projectors in the housing and that's it?
LightWerkz 12-25-2006 05:49 AM

cost
Cost for tsx retrofit was 450 which included projectors and labor.
ittybitty_STI 12-25-2006 11:21 AM

Those are HAWT! i want some! and 450 isnt bad either!

Are the HID bulbs included with the projectors? Or if you already have an H1 HID kit are you OK?

Those beams look way better then the JDM's.

So its $450 + OUR JDM headlights for the retrofit?
frayz 12-26-2006 08:38 AM

I fitted a 6000K kit in my stock EDMs

They work really really well :D
Are the HID bulbs included with the projectors? Or if you already have an H1 HID kit are you OK?
I believe the bulbs are sold separately. I think you might be able to rewire your existing hid kit to work with d2s bulbs if you bought a d2s connector and rewired it to your current ballasts.
rice h8r 12-26-2006 07:43 PM

woa when did you get new wheels frayz?? looks good!
and what a huge improvement! +1 for LightWerkz

Projector used?

Also, when taking close up pics...maybe try turning on the macro (close-up) setting? That is of course, if your camera has that setting. :)
sevendhappy 01-10-2007 11:50 AM

A recent pic I took...

Tried setting up the camera to capture the width of the beam on a regular, completely dark, non-lighted, stretch of road; but my ghetto fabulous camera only captured the more intense lighted areas of the output. If you look at the picture from an angle on your screen you can kind of see how wide the cutoffs go towards the picture edges that my camera couldn't fully capture. Also, it's difficult to get a sense of how far these shoot out onto the road based on the picture, but just know they shoot out very far (50ft+) along with giving you a wide output angle. :)

LightWerkz 01-10-2007 11:52 AM

I would say thats much much further then 50ft!
sevendhappy 01-10-2007 11:58 AM

That's why I put "50ft+". Probably more like 80ft+, but didn't want to overshoot it. :D
Dobbs 01-15-2007 03:25 PM

mind taking a picture of them mounted on the car in normal daylight? thanks!
mind taking a picture of them mounted on the car in normal daylight? thanks!
You want to see the headlights mounted on the car? Or did you want a certain angle to see it from? The headlights look like any other jdm/edm headlight since only the projector inside was changed, and no shroud or anything was added. Here is how they look on my car right now.

p8baller07 01-15-2007 11:38 PM

So its 450 + the OUR EDM/JDM headlamps right?
LightWerkz 01-15-2007 11:39 PM

Yes sir, thats for a TSX Retrofit.
Arnie 01-15-2007 11:52 PM

Does that include ballasts?
LightWerkz 01-15-2007 11:54 PM

No, only the projectors and labor.
IIdiceII 01-16-2007 12:40 AM

If we had JUST JDM headlights...non-hid...no hid-kit, no ballast, bulbs, bla bla bla.

how much for EVERYTHING including labor for a tsx HID retrofit?
Dobbs 01-16-2007 10:27 AM

your light output will be worse, light will be all over the place. You need to have projectors to use hid
dave_88 11-15-2007 10:57 PM

I shouldn't have sold my EDMs :sadbanana:
your light output will be worse, light will be all over the place. You need to have projectors to use hid
Technically, you're wrong. You don't need projectors, all you need is to place the bulb in something that's designed to be used with HIDs (reflector HID is why i'm saying this)
