20" Chrome Rims!!!????

Anybody know if i can fit some 20"r's on the ol imprez, im guessing well i kinda figure i'll need some work with coilovers and maybe fender flares...
Faraz 11-23-2000 06:58 PM

no you can't even with coilovers ...thank god too
Gerry 11-23-2000 07:29 PM

Why in the world would you ever want to install 20's on a Impreza and ruin such a
teriffic looking car? I just don't know...I mean 20's will look kinda ghetto anyways...But..That's just my oponion....Gerry
Andrew 11-23-2000 10:20 PM

I think 20s would look good.
Pinoy 11-24-2000 12:42 AM

If you can make them fit, I'd like to see it. Whatever floats your boat right? Good luck though, You're gonna need it.
Rick Buckner 11-24-2000 05:16 AM

20s -- I would think you would have to lift your Impreza. Or keep it same height and cut the fender wells out, and they should fit. Most here that have 18s talk about having to roll the fenders.
20s look good on full size trucks and SUVs.

20's would look so awesome, all ud see is chrome drivin down the street, im thinkin about just gettin my rims chromed instead.
Gambit 11-24-2000 07:45 AM

Can you even get teh car to move with that much unsprung weight?! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/eek.gif[/img]
Julian 11-24-2000 08:18 AM

Seriously...20" chrome rims? ...sigh...if you can find a 20" chrome rim that weighs less than 45 pounds, I'd be impressed. You realize the stock rims weigh 16.5 pounds a piece. You're adding ~115 pounds of ADDED weight, added unsprung weight. Your car will handle like those SUVs! It will accelerate much slower (in addition to the weight, the added diameter of 20" rims and tires will blow your gearing out of the water), turn slower, brake slower.

Eh? Yeah, yeah, it's my car, I'll do what I want. Whatever, just as long as you're aware you will turn your Subaru into a tank. '87 Hyundia Excels will be out on the prowl for you. Grandma's pushing shopping cars will pull you off the line.

If you have the money, anything can be done. Including...20" chrome rims. ...probably end up throwing your tranny when that '87 Excel comes up on you a second time...

Julian
JGard 11-24-2000 08:20 AM

my comments... chrome? no thanks...ugly. but 20", why not? get a low profile enoug tire, and you should be fine...
Aspen 11-24-2000 09:43 AM

I think you left one letter out of your screen name, shouldn't it be RicedOutRS?

I'm just kidding, but most of the folks on this board doesn't take a big liking to big chrome rims and other ricey items as you can see.

But just to answer your question,
I'm pretty sure 20" rims won't fit unless you run a 20 or 25 series sidewall(which I haven't seen). Besides, I haven't seen any company that makes 20" rims with the correct offset that will fit the Impreza.
18's will definitely fit and you might want to look at other cars that have them. It fills up the wheel wells pretty good and look big too.
JaiMak 11-24-2000 06:31 PM

Dude, I know it's your car, but this is just one of those times where I have to say- "please don't".

Not only would you screw up your car's performance, and have to run on like 15 series tires, you'd also have to pull your fenders out about 5 inches to accomodate the width and size that 20" wheels come in ( they don't make em in anything less that like 8-8.5" wide).

Oh yeah, chances are you wouldn't be able to turn the front wheels more than about 50% in either direction.
Strepto 11-24-2000 07:24 PM

Lay off guys. It's his car, and his money to do as he pleases. If you don't agree with what he's doing don't say anything. You guys need to realize that there are people out there that care more about the looks of their car than anything else. With the growth in popularity of the Impreza, what do you expect?!

With that said there's going to be major body work (didn't you just wreck the car? Maybe you could get the work done at the same time they're repairing the car?) and suspension work required to fit something that large on the corners.
Aaron'z 2.5RS 11-24-2000 09:09 PM

Ice,

Trunkmonkeyz from all over the country (and maybe other contries) are going to want to beat you with wet noodles for even thinking bout such a thing.

The others are right bout the weight and fitment issues, you'll eith have to shorten the suspension pieces to "tuck" them or flare the he!! outta the fenders. The flares you'd end up with would probly and up looking like shelves rather than fenders.

Then you'll have to replace the clutch so as to not burn it trying to get them suckers movin.

Then EVERY pebble/pothole/speed-bump will/would feel like the grand canyon with the 30-35 series tires you'd haveta use.

Personly i WANT you to try and do it, to see if it can be done. I wouldn't myself though. 20'z are for tricked out trucks with air/hydro'z

Good luck, Ice [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif[/img]

How much would a 20' tire cost anyways??? A lot I'm guessing.
IcedOutRS 11-24-2000 09:43 PM

HAHA, thanks for the imput guys, well considering a deer tried to sacrafice itself on my hoodscoop tonight, my funds will be alittle dry, my car is wasted in the front, now all i can pray for is a speedy fix, and that i get my clears paid for by insurance( doubt it tho.) 20's would be cool, but im def gonna keep it real with imprezas and go for the 18" gold, im gonna try something in the middle, bronze plating, looks like shinny gold, im lookin into that, but honestly i'll be happy when i get my car back, i hate to see my pride n joy in condition like that...i had 2 girls in the car yelling at me for driving away and not checking on the deer, basically, im taking up a new sport next winter,,, hunting...
dada21 11-25-2000 07:15 AM

I didn't realize that deer eat pre-grown rice for a living.

Geb Firneisz 11-25-2000 11:31 AM

You didn't make sure that the deer was dead!
What is wrong with you!!!
Section 8 11-25-2000 02:40 PM

You didn't make sure that the deer was dead!
What is wrong with you!!!

What would you do if it was still alive? Jump on it, put it in a head lock and break its neck? Jump up and down on its head? Hmmmmmm.... maybe get out your tire iron and beat it to death. OH I KNOW!!!! Get that pen that NEVER works and stab it to death!

Call the highway dept. (or whoever's road you were on city/county whatever) and let them worry about it.

Greg
(cynical because he was "fortunate enough to have a weapon in the car after he saw a woman hit a deer, got out to see if she was OK, and ended up shooting the half dead animal, only to have his weapon confiscated and spend a night in jail for discharging a firearm with in 50 feet of the road. (arguing with the officer didn't help things BTW))
Geb Firneisz 11-25-2000 03:36 PM

Oh, sorry for being concerned with the suffering of an animal. Nice words there Section 8 maybe you should send those Eminem maybe it can be part his next hit song!
IcedOutRS 11-26-2000 12:13 AM

GEb,
Youd better be joking, it hit my car i saw like a leg fly crooked off, it spun around and hit a tree, if it wasn't dead,,, so be it.
Section 8 11-26-2000 02:04 PM

Geb,

Nothing wrong with being concerned. But seriously. What would you do if you went back to check? Watch it? What do you carry around in your car that would quickly and painlessly end the animals life with out putting you in danger of being hurt? If he did pull over, I see the two girls that he was with screeching and crying over a wriggling around and kicking deer on the ground, trying to get away from them. A really nasty sight. To add to the fun, maybe it would jump up and hurt someone (another thread mentions that a deer got up and head butted his friend after they hit it and went back to look after it). Unless you have a means (and the will) to put finality to its suffering, call whoever operates the road and let them worry about it. Unless you want to look at something dead, or to watch it die in agony and fright..... or maybe just to show two girls a REALLY good time, but that's your choice.

(this, of course, is only for those animals who are wild and are not someone's pet. Also in mind that they KNEW what they had hit)

Gambit 11-27-2000 10:08 AM

OK if you hit the deer, I think by law it's yours to keep. So take it to a taxidermis and stuff it. <shrug> Or eat it. I dunno. My friend took a deer he hit and fed the family. Of course this guys' a hunter type guy who drives around with a beat up GMC truck.
JC 11-27-2000 03:08 PM

I think chrome rims look pretty good on the Impreza. 20s are slightly excessive, IMHO.

jetfreak 11-27-2000 03:25 PM

With rims that size you would never have to buy tires again! Rubber bands are about all you'd get to fit on the rims under the fenders.
Mizen 11-27-2000 03:47 PM

Sometimes it's good to be reminded that suffering exists. Besides, you could tell the Highway patrol the situation of the animal so that they would at least have a heads up if you bothered to call them.

BTW iced - it will take some major research on your part to fit 20's. you gotta find out what rims you want. Once you find out what width they come in you need to figure out an offset that won't rub the suspension in the inside (with coilovers) and then how much you need to extend the fenders on the outside. Major $$ once it's all said and done. Wheels, tires, bodywork and coilovers... good luck dude.

Prolly a better idea your leaning towards the 18's... much simpler.
Superu 11-27-2000 05:25 PM

20 inch chrome rims???!!! That's it!!! I'm leaving this board for good.
Eric SS 11-27-2000 06:27 PM

hehe..

Eric
couldnthinkaone 11-28-2000 03:09 AM

hey...you could always get the 22b fenders and quarters...oh wait, nevermind...
ChAi 11-28-2000 09:30 AM

20" rim wow!!! i think 18" is the biggest rim you can put on an impreza or maybe 19" but not 20"
