Don't forget that this is Ramana Lagemann's first World event. It should be interesting to see how they end up.

I hope that Speed makes an effort to mention Ramana and maybe track his progress since he is the first credible US driver in how long???

I don't know if I would hold my breath for that one...but you never know!
Subaru needs a good rally...let's hope they can pull it off! ;)

Richard is flyin' for being first on the road... Anyone know what the weather's like for the Rally? Richard set fastest time on the 2nd stage (not all the times are in as I type this), with Gronholm and Martin within 1 second... Sounds like Burning Ambition (har har).
| Idjiit | 04-10-2003 06:38 PM |
Ah, what I figured... Raining, Burnsie lucked out!
PS: Anyone notice that Rovanpera's times aren't showing up on WRC.com? Supposedly he's ahead of Tommi, but I don't see any splits or see him in any of standings except "predicted" in the dashboard...
Last time I checked, there was no shortage of competent web-app developers...

Anyone know why Speed's coverage is delayed a week? I'm trying to avoid spoilers (aka threads like this and wrc.com) in the meantime.
Wasn't their coverage of rally turkey only 1 day after or something, or am I just on crack?

Looks like Richard went out on SS3, Richard and Lagemann were 17th and 19th after SS2, Lagemann is still in 19th place. Were three Imprezas on top of GrpN until Possum Bourne retired. Looks like 3rd and 5th for Solberg and Makinen up to SS7, but Burns is gaining ground on Solberg after passing up Makinen. Gronholm is a machine though.

Coverage of every rally is delayed this season. The 1 hour of coverage for each SCCA Pro-rally event does help to make up for it though.

Grp N Imprezas

Bourne retired w/ a broken motor after the 5th stage. He had been battling w/Arai and Crocker for Grp N lead.
Richard tossed it off the road on the third stage... In the previous two stages he was 17th in Grp N.
After 6 stages, the Imprezas of Crocker-Foletta and Arai-Sircombe are in a tight dog-fight for the lead, followed by five fast Evos, then Rowe-Agnew is in 8th in their Impreza and West-Cobham in their Impreza.
Lagemann-Orr is in 16th in his Impreza, and chasing Blomqvist-Goni in another Impreza.

Total bummer, I know. Waiting a bloody week for the results? Not likely. I always seem to end up ruining it by getting results before Speed finally does their broadcast. For example, I actually "watched" the rally off and on on WRC.com, I'm such a dork. Anyway, it's not like I would spoil anything and say that Petter came in third on day one or anything. I wouldn't do that.

What's going to happen to the sheep in NZ???
Do you think the sheep might watch the WRC cars while out in the fields?

It was interesting to read that Markko says that he's been pushing "very very hard", while Petter is "just cruising". I'm glad that Petter is taking it a little easy - I imagine he's dedicated to finishing this one in the points. With the new system, even second place is a good spot to be in.
Go Petter!

Tommi got passed up by a few people yesterday, including Loeb on the last stage. I think he'll push a little more today to try and regain sixth. Petter is going to have to push or else he's going to be passed up by Burns for sure. Lagemann moved up to 14th in GrpN, he had an 11th place time on the last stage.

Crocker is not contesting PCWRC, and after day 1 there are only 3 Imprezas in the first 10, and the rest are evil EVOs. OK one of them is called Proton, which is essentially a rebadged EVO for Malaysia. Hope Toshi will make it this time.

After the rather lengthy Stage 10, Gronholm has extended his lead by almost 30 seconds over the chasing pack. Solberg picked
up a puncture and has slipped to 4th...
Carlos had a pretty extensive off, and has dropped back 14 minutes.
Why aren't there many Gronholm fans? I think that sometimes people can be dismissive of his obvious talent since he's driving the "unfair" Peugeot... But it obviously isn't just the car, the guy rules, no one else comes close.

Check this one http://www.wrc.com and in the results section you can choose between overall and production championship.
Who ould have thought Ramana is 27th overall. I know it is not over yet, but everybody wrote him off before the guy even got there...

Ummmmm did anyone see Tommi plummet down the standings. I was like what the heck then looked through all the times, still??? look at penalties 5 friggen minutes. I think they caught Tommi with something illegal, didn't that happen a couple of rallies ago too??
It sucks that Richard and Bourne both went out, especially as it was only day one:mad: I would have like to see what they could have done

Tommi was caught speeding on a road section, looks like.
| dwx | 04-12-2003 07:17 PM |
Five minute road penalty for Makinen. Solberg looks safe in 3rd but then again Makinen was comfortably in 5th when he got the penalty, back to 8th now. Doubt he will catch Auriol for 7th.

Not too shabby. Petter grabs third, Tommi seventh, Toshi wins Group N, and Lagemann finnished in the top 10 in Group N! Must have been a truly awesome experience for him. Congrats.

Does anyone know why there's a pic of Richard Burns driving a GC body WRCar in the latest image (4/16) section of SWRT.com? Is this a prelude that he's going to come back to Subaru after Tommi's retirement?
| Idjiit | 04-16-2003 10:14 AM |
Hmm, interesting. I still haven't heard anything official - last thing I saw Richard say was that he hasn't begun talking to either Peugeot or Subaru, but who knows?
That is odd, though.

I think they caught Tommi with something illegal, didn't that happen a couple of rallies ago too??
He was doing between stage travel when he got busted. The crime was dong 99 mph in 50 mph, when the cops tried to pull him over. Apparently he just gave them the finger and zoomed off. He was later booked and slammed with a hefty monetary fine and the FIA WRC slapped him with a 5 min time penalty. If it weren't for that, he would have made 5th place in standings.
My question is why did he even bother to stop for the cops to ticket him in the end when he could have just dusted them (I'm just j/k, I don't condone street racing).

On Speed's coverage they intimated that Peugeot might be intentionally hobbling Bruns' car and in one interview he said as much, with words to the effect of, "I'm going as fast as my car will let me," with a sort of wry smile.
Do you guys think this is valid or just sour grapes? Can Grunholm really be that much faster, or is RB being held back? This type of thing is done throughout motorsports, and from how I read Corrado he seems like a pretty cut throat guy so I wouldn't put it past him.
Great drive from Martin, those Fords are going to be a force. And they really do look like the Star Wars Clone helmet!!! :) I think McCrae may be kicking himself a little having seen the new car.
Good points finish for Petter, maybe he can put something together from here. Tommi, who knows, he was sick so maybe he didn't feel like being bothered by that cop!
-----------
Speed's coverage was significantly improved by having Nicky Grist do the color commentary instead of just a few tech segements. He cut into old Ralphie's microphone time, and you could also sense that Ralph was trying a bit harder so as not to embarrass himself in front of Grist.
