A Must see - Hans Stuck at Nurburgring

I know he's not in a Subaru, but it's so cool to see in car footage.

i thought the thread title meant that some guy named Hans was stuck at at the 'ring. like he couldn't get past a herd of slower moving cars. but that was some impressive driving. i could feel my heartbeat getting faster just watching that. thinking...oh **** he hasn't lifted for that blind corner yet. uh oh....

Amazing...I don't know which I like more -- the car or the driver. The level of commitment is awesome.
| rex n effect | 03-08-2005 12:07 PM |
i've only seen a few vids from the 'ring, but that was by FAR the fastest. awesome.
| artkevin | 03-08-2005 12:43 PM |
So was he cheering at the end because he set a good time or becuase he survived?
The track is about as scary as I've seen since the days of the Targa Floria and the like. I never realised that the ring used the FIA track in addition to the old 173 turn ring.

Hm. My dad has a picture of Stuck in his garage, in a CSL a few feet above the ring back in the 70s. I'll have to send this to him.

Driverwerks.com sells a bunch of these. Why isn't this car in GT4?
BMWs are cool and all, but my interest kind of slacks off after the late 70s, E30 M3 nonwithstanding.

Hans is the man... he's probably got as many laps at the Nurburgring as anyone. And it shows :)

| rupertberr | 03-08-2005 10:05 PM |
Speechless....
He was picking off those 911's like they were shopping carts.
Hans Stuck = The Man
I think the only thing that could top that would be in car F-1 footage from 76.

For Mika...
Hans Stuck's trademark is yodeling when he wins.
I saw him drive in the VW Beetle Cup here in the states back in 2000. Most of the field were famous pro drivers (including Hans) but Hans clearly could drive one of those faster than everyone else. He drew a starting position of 14th and won the race.
A couple years ago, I forget if it was Daytona or Sebring, in a BMW in the rain he was posting fast lap times quicker than everyone in the field, including the prototypes!

Hans Stuuuck-ie is a racing god. Have watched his talent for many years. Simply amazing.
| cooleyjb | 03-09-2005 09:48 AM |
Hans Stuck has done mostly production based racing throughout his career as I remember. With a few stints into F1
The best Porsche 911 driver EVER.
When Audi Quattro's made their appearance on the racing scene in the late 80's early 90's he went out and crushed all the competition so badly that turbo-charged AWD cars are still heavily penalized in racing.

Off topic from Hans, but try the video in post # 13 of this thread... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=718493
It is 720Mb but worth it. It is 47 minutes of racing around the 'Ring, including in-car footage at the start, the pace lap, then some seriously fast driving and passing (once he catches slower traffic at around 35 mins). I think his race laps are slightly faster, but it's hard to tell.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have never heard of him. I got on his website though, and he definitely has quite a remarkable history. To see him drive Nurburgring the way he did was impressive...even moreso with his past:)

I'm confronted by my ignorance on a daily basis, but when it comes to Hans, I've been admiring him for two decades. Glad we could introduce you to such a marvelous driver. He is.... a driver's driver.
I sat transfixed just watching his hands. So smooth and clairevoyant.

I've been a big fan of Hans Stuck since his season with Brabham in '77. I think the only time I saw him in person was when he raced the Audi Quattro at Long Beach in the mid '80's. I think his teammate was a young Scott Pruett, but my memory could really be fading...
I always had a good laugh when he often mentioned with great excitement how he tuned his cars through his "bum"

Yeah I read his resume too, and then watched the video again. After reading he first drove the 'ring over 30 years ago at the age of 16 I realized he must know every corner down to the smallest bump. Even the squirrely part coming out of the banked turn looked almost as if he planned to do that.

you better know that track REALLY WELL before you go full throttle. HOLY CRAP!
he must have been hitting 170 on those "straights" (even the straights had imperfections in the road)
good driver, by the way....with a great sounding car.

Wow I just watched that vid and the Hans vid at the same time. Hans pulls out about a 6 sec lead until the first set of straights about half way when the Porsche pulls back up to about 3 sec behind. Hans pulls away again to about 6 sec. BUT that Porsche has alot more top end and almost catches Hans on the long straight near the end.
I ran Hans on the top half in WMP and the Porsche on the bottom in Real Player. I gotta see if my kid can put these two together side by side in one video.

Man, isn't that Porsche one a butt clincher? When he's closing on those first lap backrunners on his second lap, it looks like there's about 100 MPH speed difference! When it was over, I found that I had been tightly gripping the armrest of my chair.

I've asked this before but never got a good answer:
Is there any particular reason why the two carousel corners are profiled they way they are, and made with concrete and cobblestones? I know the place is real old, but were these corners just never 'modernized' in order for the place to retain it's character? It just seems like really crappy design or repair work to me.
http://www.toxo.de/ring/nordschleife/schwalbenschwanz.html
And what's with all the writing on the track's surface? Does it mean anything, or is it just graffiti?
