A quick question on STI lights part 1

aview2nv 12-27-2001 11:43 AM

A quick question on STI lights...

Given that the STI is now on sale in Germany with the 3 lense projectors, wouldn't the LHD versions be available instead of going for the JDM versions? Just a thought....
purplegrape 12-27-2001 02:27 PM

humm...interesting...
I wonder how much it'll cost... hopefully it's not gonna be 2k+ like the JDM ones...

got pics?

[edit:]
Also, do the germans use MPH vs. KmPH? b/c if they do, then we could probably use their STi guage cluster as well...

which euro version? the british one is in kmph... the redline isn't really that big of an issue b/c we all know its 7g on our cars and the shift light... well I wanna try to get that to work

but back on topic

can anybody get some of these lights?
aview2nv 12-27-2001 03:40 PM

Good question. I guess we would need someone that has "connections" in Germany. But I would definitely be interested in the LHD versions.
lenyx 01-12-2002 11:42 PM

I just pm'd someone who may be able to help.
GoodFinder 01-12-2002 11:56 PM

Keep us posted. I would really love to be able to do the tri-lamp HID for WRX in LHD. GoodFinder :)
aview2nv 01-13-2002 08:09 AM

lenyx, that's cool. Definitely keep us posted,

Zahnster 01-13-2002 01:14 PM

There is no STI headlights. The STI can be gotten with the same headlights our car has.(or at least before 2002 anyways), and possibly the RA still has our headlights.

Subaru offered an optional projector HID for $2000 on ANY Impreza. Current models are all projector. But HID is still optional on ALL of them. (JDM only...)

I'm interested in LHD projectors(HID or not)....keep us posted.
GoodFinder 01-13-2002 07:25 PM

The ones I am so eager to obtain are the tri-lamp HID in LHD for the WRX. It would be great if we could find a company overseas that will sell and ship them to us. Keep us posted! GoodFinder :)

Verist 01-13-2002 09:58 PM

Why would the German STi use MPH? Over there everything is in KM.. I'm confused.
BugEyed 01-14-2002 03:28 PM

Mixed news;

the projector lamps are available in Europe in LHD (and the UK in RHD) now.
the HID lamps that are an option in Japan are not legal anywhere in Europe (or the UK) from Subaru as they are not legal for OEM fitment.
GoodFinder 01-14-2002 05:23 PM

... fiddle faddle ... does the tri-lamp non-HID in LHD for WRX significantly improve the lighting of the road versus stock WRX headlights, I wonder ...

GoodFinder :)
aview2nv 01-14-2002 05:35 PM

Duncan,
Thanks for clarifying. The reason for my original post was for the non-HID. I just want the correct LHD beam-pattern. No way would I pay the $2800US for the HID. Still wish I knew someone in Germany.

Scott:rolleyes:
Die Civic 01-14-2002 11:07 PM

you can get the jdm projectors from accurit performance for a fairly good price, less than half the amount of the jdm hid.
FirmWind 01-15-2002 02:23 PM

I've researched this topic for a while, and this is what I found:

regular projection, non-HID lights are indeed brighter than our stock headlights. In fact, some people say you don't even need HID with the kind of light coming from the projector setup.

Bad news: even though the non-Brit, euro lights are LHD, they *still* require some degree of splice/wiring, because the euros' wiring harness are different than ours. They have a third plug for headlamp aiming, which we don't have. rallyperformance.com sells a LHD HID morette that is completely plug-n-play (meaning the wiring harness completely fits US specs), but I really like the projector setup. I was looking at Prodrive's UK300 tri-lamp LHD setup for a while, but last I read they did not yet have true plug-n-play as their wiring harness is still different for their version of LHD. I believe Prodrive said they're going to look into a plug-n-play version for US market, and we may hear more from them later this year. I hope so. BTW, they're also looking into getting the Prodrive Performance Package (PPP) ported here for US spec Imprezas.
GoodFinder 01-15-2002 02:27 PM

Sounds like the non-HID tri-lamp conversion for LHD WRX is a real contender (and probably a good bit less expensive than HID). I hope we can hear more soon regarding when it is truly available for the WRX here in the USA. GoodFinder :)
jerseydevil 01-15-2002 02:46 PM

where are you guys getting prices for these lights? i got priced about $900 or so for the HID JDM dual beam projectors, minus the HID kits required. i'm still looking for the best price seeing as i'm short on cash. btw does anyone know the price on these lights from fizz auto? i cant find any prices on their site and i'm still waiting for a repliy from my email. thanks.
aov 01-15-2002 03:49 PM

I also would like to know what prices we could get the non-HID JDM lights for. I do like HIDs, but I am not willing to pay that much for lights. Would much rather have the JDM headlights and go with regular bulbs to save money and ease of mind knowing that it won't the break the bank if they broke.

I hope they will come down in price some before the STi comes, but even then I'm sure they are not going to be cheap from the factory. How come no one has made knock-offs yet? They make them for most tuner cars already. How many other cars have so many owners wanting to change their headlights!!!

Exactly!!! Doesn't make any sense. Whatever manufacturer makes knockoffs first is gonna make a killing selling them. Don't they realize that??

Also if anyone can get a price on the LHD STi Projector lights let me know. I was gonna buy a set of the JDM ones but they're for RHD cars.
In2Deep 01-15-2002 06:19 PM

Hmmm interesting. The German model STI is 265 hp as well.

(according to today's currency conversion amounts)

STI base cost: $31,170
Prodrive Version: $34,794

Sounds good to me!
lenyx 01-16-2002 02:22 PM

Update

Here's what my contact had to say:

"As soon as it becomes available I think the lights will be available too.It is beiing sold in the coming months over here. I have a dealer contact in Holland and in Switserland ,and in Germany a friend of mine (works at Porsche as an engineer) has very good contacts with the German Subaru importer.
Don't think they will be cheap though!
So I see no problem in getting these ,and since only the UK drive left here the RHD LHD discussion is not an issue."

So it might be a little bit until we get a price.. but I will post as soon as I find out. I'm sure they're expensive.. but if I'm gonna shell out tons of money I'd like to at least have LHD instead of RHD lights.
GoodFinder 01-16-2002 03:05 PM

thanks for the update

it will be GREAT to be able to put LHD tri-lamp in the WRX

keep us posted on what you find out regarding when and how to order it

Thanks for keeping us informed lenyx! That's great news.

phantasm 02-03-2002 11:16 PM

Anyone have an update on getting the LHD projector headlights? I would have thought that a shrewd businessman would have had a complete kit put together at this point easily making $100 - $200 over cost. Why? Cause suckers like myself would pay for such a headlight.
Graham E Ware 02-04-2002 07:20 AM

I've just put a set on Ebay...

Are these LHD tri-lamp units for the USA WRX?

pics?

can someone post pics of the tri-lamp/projector lights. there are two versions that i know of.
aview2nv 02-04-2002 08:36 PM

Just an FYI, the JDM ones are RHD, not LHD. Dan sells the JDM spec lights, so if you want the correct beam pattern these are not the droids you're looking for.

If you want firsthand observation on that:

one of my customers, JBPolkAudio, finished installing our WRC look kit which uses projectors. He posted quite a few pics here and there is no doubt that the light output of these lights (using Hella w/H7's) is significantly higher.

I can also check with the German Impreza GT club to see what availability/price is like. The club gets discounts on lots of stuff, like Mov'It brakes. I have Eurospec headlamps that I picked up in Germany with the height adjustable motors. No problem with compatibility with my US harness. the motor plug is separate from the bulb plug. Unfortunately for me we don't have the harness for the adjustable height motor in our cars.

By the way, all speedometers are in km/h in Deutschland.
aview2nv 02-04-2002 11:08 PM

Cool. Thanks. I knew someone had to have contacts in Germany. Please keep us informed.

GoodFinder 02-04-2002 11:08 PM

Arnie,

That would be super, and greatly appreciated, for you to see if LHD tri-lamp assembly in HID could be obtainable for the USA WRX!

Keep us posted, thanks, GoodFinder :)
Arnie 02-05-2002 04:10 AM

Yeah, I lived in Hamburg for 8 years. That's way up north( for you geographically challenged). ;) I miss the Autobahn and the Nürburgring! I'll keep you guys posted once hear something.:)
ToddStratton 04-07-2002 10:05 PM

Bump

Just thought this deserved a bump. With the Euro-spec STis out , it would be great if someone could find a vendor willing to get some of the LHD non-HID projector headlamps.

TRS
S-WRX 04-08-2002 01:59 AM

man, its not going to be cheaper than JDM !?!?!?!?!
I just called my aunt in Germany to get me one set of STI headlights, except she said the town she was living, there were no Suby dealer
Oh well if she calls I will either have a good news or a bad news
i'll keep you guys updated.
lenyx 04-09-2002 03:34 PM

Well good luck to anyone that tries. Subie dealers over there are pretty reluctant to give up their headlights as they're pretty scarce right now. I've also read here in the forums that they're getting a lot of heat from Subaru for selling them to people with non-sti cars.
