Red headlight mod part 1

YodaPez 01-18-2003 05:11 PM

Red headlight mod
Ok, I've done a search, but I haven't seen what I'm looking for.

Every picture I can find of the headlight mod has either been in black or blue. Has anyone done this in red? My wife's TS wagon is SRP, and I'm wondering how it would look if I did the headlight mod to match.

Try it
Ski Man 01-18-2003 06:03 PM

I agree - try it!
No one had done a Blue before when I tried it - and I like it.:D
krazedant 01-18-2003 06:29 PM

I think it would look good. Do it and post pics afterwards.

I would, but I'm not sure what paint to use and I'm afraid of grabbing the wrong color and having it look "off". Most people suggest using a high-temp paint - does anyone know what would match? Or at least get me close enough that it wouldn't look different when it was done?

Though it's a little on the expensive side, you can use this spray paint on anything on the car (i.e. if you want to do a DIY job on the side skirts, want to paint some of the plastic pieces under the hood, etc.). This company sells OEM paints in spray cans so you can order them. The web site is www.paintscratch.com and they have every color of every car.

Good Luck.

But doesn't the paint have to be able to withstand the high temps of the headlights? I'm afraid that I'd get it done with the paint from paintscratch and it would end up cracking. Has anyone used paint from there to do this (or even some other kind of regular spray paint)?
sonicblue 01-21-2003 03:55 PM

sonicblue to the res-kyooooo
I"m here to tell ya', I used a non-high temp paint for mine. Mind you, I used a "good" paint, i.e., not the cheapest can on the hardware store shelf. You're not painting the area right around the headlight and the other bulbs don't produce near the heat of the headlight. I haven't noticed ANY deterioration of my paint job and it's been several months. I think the paint from paintscratch would be an excellent choice.

Re: sonicblue to the res-kyooooo
Then I'll give it a shot...I'll make sure to take/post pics when it's all done. I appreciate all the help!
YodaPez 03-29-2003 08:05 PM

Ok, I did it...it finally got warm enough this week that I could be outside for a while. As far as the process, I followed the directions HERE. I got the spraypaint from paintscratch.com to match the SRP. I was initially worried that the parking light was going to glow red, so I made sure I masked off the circle where the plastic cover sits. I also removed the nasty orange bulb cover and put Phillips Silvervisions in there.

The pictures were taken in a weird afternoon light, so they're not as good as I'd like, but should be good enough to get the idea. I'm really pleased with the way the lights came out. The pictures really don't do them justice. (If someone would like better pictures, let me know and I'll take some more).

OMG that is freaking-A awesome!

I love it - very, very nicely done! :D :D

I'd like to see a couple pics of WRB, too!
WRBlueMeanie 03-29-2003 09:16 PM

WOW!!! That came out better than I expected!! Does anybody have any pics of the mod with WRBlue paint??
ScoobyEnthused 03-30-2003 12:08 AM

Wow! Very nicely done! Very clean and sleek. Much props to ya. Any shots with the whole car in it? I would love to see that.

Thanks for the compliments! I've actually done more to her TS than I have done to my WRX (yeah, we're a Subie family). I'll get some more pictures up some time next week when I have a chance to wash it...crappy NE Ohio weather - it's supposed to snow tomorrow.

 Great job! Looks excellent!
Pochebum 03-30-2003 04:54 AM

I might be getting mine painted WRB professionaly with clear coat next week. They said they'd only charge me labor for any more small peices I wanted to paint. If I get it done I'll try and post pics of a clearcoated painted one next weekend if this thread still exists or anybody cares.

How about a head-on shot at headlight level. By the way, very nice!
sonicblue 03-31-2003 08:23 AM

I have to throw this in here 'cause I'm spreading the word.......I just painted my ZS replica grill myself with paint from www.paintworldinc.com. Half the price of paintscratch and the match is awesome. The only reason you can tell is that the rest of my car is starting to dull and has some swirls, so hood -> grill, you can see the difference just a little. Hopefully, a full Zaino treatment will take care of that. The bottom line is, paintworldinc.com has quality products and much cheaper than paintscratch.

On the point at hand, Yoda - you rule! Way to take the plunge for the sake of innovation for us all to see. It looks great!!

BTW, just for technicality's sake, you've done a "partial headlight mod" - the full job would have painted the blinker area, too, but it still looks awesome.
BOY 03-31-2003 09:51 AM

Yodapez, might I suggest one more "tweak" that might look very good on top of the very nice work you're already done. Try to get a set of eyelids made, not too crazy here, just a nice subtle "triming" the top of the "bugeye" should make the color matched portions stand out that much more.

Awesome job BTW!
YodaPez 03-31-2003 11:24 PM

Again, thanks for the compliments - I had no idea it would be such a hit!

The only reason I ordered from paintscratch was bacause that was the only place I knew of at the time...I suppose it didn't hurt to have the flex additive with the spray can so that if there are any other little parts that I want to paint, it'll help it stick.

As for the eyelids, I think I'm going to pass. I really like the way the headlights look when they're all silver (i.e. no orange blinker bulb) and the eyelids would only cover that. I've grown pretty fond of the "bug eyes" - I have a silver WRX, and once I removed the blinker cover it looked SOOO much better.

sonicblue - you're right, it is the partial mod. But I really couldn't do the full mod because I was afraid of having the blinker give off a red glow and I surely didn't need that.

On the TS, the red is really subtle so it gives it a very nice, yet not overbearing, touch. I have a picture of the car head-on, but the sun was behind it so it didn't turn out that well. As an off note, I also painted the badge with the same paint. It looks good, but for some reason it looks darker unless the sun is shining directly on it. It could be because of the plastic on the badge, or perhaps the black background of the grill.

Ok, I finally got the time to take the photos off the camera...

My wife wanted me to add that she thinks everyone with a SRP Impreza should do it (she thinks it's way cool).
128d 04-10-2003 06:14 PM

I agree, that looks alot better. I would love to see a pic of this on a blue car. Ski Man think you could take a few pics? Also anyone wana whip up a photoshop of these on an STi headlight?

YodaPez, the mod looks amazing!

Wanted to find out what steps you performed to paint the Subaru badge.
sonicblue 04-29-2003 08:04 AM

Remove badge from grill
Remove adhesive backing
Sand off black paint
Paint color of your choice
Apply new adhesive backing obtained from auto parts store
Reinstall
4evryng 04-29-2003 06:21 PM

Thanks for the 411 SonicBlue. I thought there was some trick to the badge mod as I've never seen it done before.
SUPER RAD 04-30-2003 04:43 AM

that looks awesome
PPower 04-30-2003 09:29 AM

Looks amazing! Now you ought to paint the black area around the fog light. It will finish it off great.
NeoteriX 04-30-2003 10:24 AM

Where did you get the silvervisions from? How easy is it to take off the orange bulb and replace them with the silvervisions? Any pics of your Silver WRX?

I got the Silvervisions here. Just follow the directions on ScoobyMods and take your time. I have pics of the WRX, but none recent and I can't take them now because it's all apart - I'm putting in the amp for my sound system. I'll take some when it's done.
