Adding Bolstering to USDM STI seats part 1

Adding Bulstering to USDM STI seats
Can anyone point me to a thread started about this? I found one on imprezawrxsti.com, but wasn't too helpful. I would love to see pics of install w/ tips.
These seats are just terrible...I had better bolstering on my Impreza LX seats. Seriously. Also thinking about just getting some STI recanos or JDM STI (which i have sat in and think are freakin perfect). I would like not to go through this hassle and $ though.

I'm getting JDM's from Chaste (jeff, youda man) . You can get fronts only , sell your usdm's, and be into it for like $200.

I've got people lined up to buy my old ones. The usdm stis fit some great, not others.

I bought some of those little kidney pays from Sparco to try to add some hug to my seats, and they do help, and only cost $22. I also stick a sparco lumbar pad under the front of my thighs to make a deeper well for my generous derriere. It feels good for zippy driving, but the pads need to be stitched to the seat to stay there, because they have nothing for the velcro on the pads to grip.

I've been wondering about recushioning jobs, too. I want new seats in my RS but might consider work on my OE seats (which have grey leather on them).

I'd like to have softer cushions under my butt and maybe on my back and headrest, then add lumbar support and stiffen the side and thigh bolsters.
Tobey 05-02-2004 08:15 PM

i was just about to start a thread about this!!

there has to be some add-a-pads out there to bulk up on the side/ass bolsters. there has to be some info out there!

i just checked the lagacy forum, not current posts today. do you have a link by chance?

bump~
jsavage 05-03-2004 01:10 AM

Did you add the sparco kidney pads underneath the covers?
Man...we gotta figure something out that can't be too expensive or difficult. I should start selling a skinny ass kit for these seats.

try a search in imprezawrxsti.com
I found a thread that has a little bit of detail the other day

You should try out the 2002/2003 WRX seats. Here is a picture of the set I have in my L:

You could probably make money and get better seats.

2002/2003 only. The 2004 have less support.

Nice Paul, but what of the seats sitting too high in the GC?

I know that's a subjective thing (and I also know you're not exactly tall ;) ), but even if the seat raised an inch, it'd be too much for me. Kind of the opposite effect of what I'm looking for.

The driver seat is height adjustable, so I don't see it being any different than the other seat. I don't have a sun roof either (like an RS, so the headliner might be lower in your car). Heather doesn't mind the height increase at all, she is 5' tall though.

Look at where the head rest is though, it isn't even close to the headliner. You'd have to be pretty tall to have issues with the height. Now, maybe not liking the seat position/options, but I'd recommend trying it out. It only raised the seat maybe an inch, mostly up front.

Where can I find pics of 2002/03 WRX seats?

The picture I posted above is of a 2002 seat. the 2003's are the same. It is slow to load, sorry. Just give it a minute or so.

Also, don't take my word for it. Look for a local dealer with a 2002 or 2003 used model on the lot. Go sit in it. Let me know what you think. I went from stock 2001 L seats to these. I loved them when I had a 2002 WRX, so I was happy to get a set again. I've never had a seat with more support in a car though.

Paul,

I'm 5'11" and my head goes a couple inches higher than the headrest at all times.

I know that pretty much anybody (including myself) would happily do a 1:1 trade for STi seats. You could probably make at least $1-200 on the trade, though. Many people will be willing to help you out.

I think he'd make more money. I see STI seats selling for ~$600-$800. Try a search. I paid $250 from my set of WRX front seats.

the only thing that would worry me about stuffing the sti seats is popping the stitching.

that would SUCK!
scrappydoo 05-05-2004 04:05 AM

Well just finished doing the sidebolsters on seats, and man what a difference. It was really easy and only took about 45min to do. I used pipe insulator and cut it to a length of 17in, and I didn't trim any of the width off. Then cut the top portion into a right-angle triangle to match the top of the bolster. Fit like a charm.

I'll do the bottom part of the seat this weekend cause I gotta take out some of the hogrings to get it where I want it.
redwagon 05-05-2004 04:24 AM

Would you post pix when you're done, please?
scrappydoo 05-05-2004 04:27 AM

If I can get a camera sure. When it's all installed you can't see any difference though. I'll see if I can get a friend with a camera to come over this weekend when I do the bottom portion of my seats.
Costas 05-05-2004 10:19 AM

I need to ADD some foam to the drivers side left bolster in my V6s...does anyone know if the cover comes off? Material is still good, the foam is starting to wear inside a bit

You see right under were the belt touches the seat...a small little dimple?

this has happened before on all the other cars Ive had with sport seats...ths time I want to get it before it becomes a problem.
scrappydoo 05-05-2004 10:51 AM

If yours don't have the zipper on the back I'm sure it'll still have the sealer thing on the bottom (on the back of the seat just where the two portions of the seat meet). It's like a Glad bag seal. If you don't have those then you'll have to take the seat out and undo the hogrings. Not a big deal just make sure you have new hogrings and the tools you need to install em. The fabric isn't glued to the seat so all you have to do is pull the fabric back and install the pipe foam.

Siper2 05-07-2004 09:55 AM

No problem. :) My issue is that I ordered leather with my car when I bought it, so what would be a pretty simple $600ish purchase for new GC WRX seats (same as yours, without the fancy cloth) will turn out to be more expensive, since I'd need leather. So I'll probably save up for some Cobras or something.

Definitely a hot car!!! I suggest a Ver6 front grille (or 22B replica) and some 22B hood vents.

Hey where did you get that front plate? I need to find one, since I'm in PA now and we don't need front plates.
Costas 05-07-2004 09:57 AM

I got it online somewhere, they make custom Euro plates...Ill try to find the link-

THis one is getting a 03 WRX engine in a week or so (Picked up the motor + goodies last month)
Siper2 05-07-2004 08:54 PM

Did you happen to find that website? :) Definitely want a custom Euro plate, that is unless I find a really cool US-spec front plate somewhere, but no luck so far.

Is the quality pretty good? No flimsy mounts or anything?

I'd love to do a WRX engine swap, too. Actually, what'd be ideal for me is the EJ25-T out of the Forester XT. Just enough power for me, then I'd add a nice 2.5" pipe section and a Scoobysport muffler, maybe a slightly larger intercooler, and call it a wrap.

(Well, for the next year or two, anyway!!!)
Costas 05-07-2004 11:54 PM

Yep its
http://www.autoplates.com/

The people there were a little rude when I ordered them (two years ago) but the service was damn quick!

I had to make a custom bracket to hold both plates...Ill try to get a picture of it to give you an idea
Siper2 05-08-2004 08:53 PM

Ugh, I'm awful at fabricating anything more than toothpick houses.

Thanks for the link though, I'll check it out!!!

Say have you done a lot of long-distance driving in those seats? As much as I want some Cobra ones, the Euro. GC WRX seats certainly are a cheaper alternative, and I wouldn't even need brackets!!!

Plus if I was REEEEALLY nice to her, I might convince my wife to let me take the driver's side height-adjustable bracket out of her
'95 Legacy, that way I'd have adjustability on both. :D (Since the Euro seats come with it on the right, since they're obviously RHD, I hear that's the correct swap to do!)
Costas 05-09-2004 12:44 AM

My company makes rally skid plates and other Subaru accessories, so I can fabricate lil' custom bits and pieces for myself quite easily, :P, its really easy though, in fact you can even make it with some pieces found at Pep boys and Home depot if you choose to mount it this way. Ill try to get a picture of how I did it if you go this route

Regarding the seats:

Its not long distance driving, its the way I get into the car (I think this holds true for many people with bolster wear) , I cant open the door all the way in my garage, and I end up "sliding" my rear on that area everytime I enter the vehicle
Derk1127 05-09-2004 03:41 AM

costas- in regard to your seats, i heard from autoleathers.com that the fabric for the newer sti seats are glued onto the foam, i asked gruppe-s to order me new fabric for my seats (JDM V3's) and they were able to order the fabric but then they said that the newer ones like the v5-8's had their fabric glued onto the foam, you might want to check on that before you take apart the seat to get to the foam. Hopefully its not glued on. My v3 seats have zippers on the backs on each side and a zipper through the harness hole by the headrest. hopefully this helps.
NeoteriX 05-09-2004 10:15 AM

Not to hijack the thread, but with the Euro plates, how is it legal in the US if it doesn't list the state? Or does it?

I was worried about that, I looked quickly the other day and I had a feeling that they were glued...

Neo- I keep my regular plate too, and I havent had any problems-

Costas and I live in states that don't require front plates. Some do (like where I used to live in NH), some don't (like PA). So if you don't need one, you can put anything you want up front, really.

Except, I'm guessing, another state's plate. Like if I kept my old NH plate up there, that'd be a problem, I'd guess.
Costas 05-09-2004 01:26 PM

Sipe- NY requires fronts

They are pretty strict here and I havent had problems.

But I always have my front ny plate on in addition to the Euro plate
Siper2 05-09-2004 04:34 PM

In that case you're probably not legal, but you are lucky. :D
Derk1127 05-09-2004 05:03 PM

Costas, i know DJIMPREZA had his seats reupolhustered (sp?) you might want to ask him how they got the fabric off. When you reach under your seat can you feel where the fabric is held under or is it like its glued to the seat. Im still trying to figure out if mine are glued or not. I think mine are not but it would be strange to just change it from v4 to v5. I know the newer ones v7 and up are glued because you cant buy the fabric by itself from subaru.

Yeah, Im kind of worried that it is, let me take a good look tonight and post what I find!
scrappydoo 05-10-2004 03:19 AM

Alot of times it's just the flat portion of the seat that's glued. (The part your butt sits on, and the part your back is flat against). If the bolsters themselves aren't glued you're good to go. If you find out how they're glued let us know.
Costas 08-31-2004 10:44 PM

I think they are glued, took a look today :(
