aftermarket steering wheel

i am thinking about installing an aftermarket steering wheel into my 2002 wrx and i have a few questions.
has anyone been able to install a wheel and keep their cruise control and if you did can you please post pics?
also what is the easiest way to install a wheel as far as hubs and things like that?
i also want to use a quick release what does every one recomend?
thanks

don't value your life much? unless this is in a track only car where you'll be outfitted with a helmet, a cage, and a harness, then you're just being stupid. style is not worth the loss of an airbag.
my old car just a month or two ago:

Good luck keeping the criuse. It can be done as i've seen it here neumerous times. Ask Subiegal. She got rid of hers and kept the criuse control. Good luck...

Just buy another wrx or sti wheel with airbag and get it reupolstered. I just bought another sti wheel and it's getting wrapped in black or dark blue suede with the red stitching and extra padding for a thicker wheel. This way I have a custom wheel while retaining factory cruise control and airbag.:) Here's a link to a shop in Florida that does this:

Here's another shop in Texas:

The smaller diameter makes aftermarket wheels that much more appealing..
You can almost see the cruise control arm in this picture:

I used a couple of plastic spacers from Sears Hardware to elevate the controller. I bought a couple of stadard pitched bolts with hex heads and drilled and tapped the hub. A dremel type tool with some good bits is necessary. To get my hub to fit I had to grind some of it anyway - I would've been up the creek if I didn't have the carbide bit, along with access to a garage where I was able to use their air tools. The slot in the hub for the horn/air bag/cruise control plug is too small. A good carbide bit and some grease will quickly grind the aluminum on the hub away.
The quick release is not supposed to be for daily driving - and it also moves the wheel quite a bit close to you (I believe).
Installation? I believe you'll need a torx bit and an 18mm socket. Take the horn pad off by unscrewing the torx bolts from behind. Disconnect the battery (air bag). With the key out of the ignition (steering wheel locked and straight) take the nut from the steering column off. Unplug everything. Grab both sides of the wheel, pull and rock it off. Momo sells a resistor to shut off the air bag light.
If there's a mechanic you trust for stuff like this, I suggest you take the car to him.

Here's where I've been getting my wheels.. I like swapping them out every once in a while when I start getting bored with one.. right now I'm using this one.

It has those alcantara side grips.

where can i get the srs resistor? and as far as diy goes, how hard is it, will it take me 1/2 day to do it? i got the nrg quick release and the shorty hub, along with a momo monte carlo steering wheel...
| PeteDucati | 12-07-2006 02:18 PM |
I picked up the MOMO hub kit that came with the resistor. I'm sure you can find a thread where someone mentions which one to use.
It took me about 45 minutes to install my wheel - and that's because I had to grind the hub to fit over that plug. In theory it should only take 1/2 hour, but if you're going to retro-fit the cruise it might take longer. Remember, I was drilling and tapping and rigging it by the seat of my pants - I'm surprised it came out as nice as it did. I'll try to take a better pic of the cruise later today.

I used plastic "risers" from Sears hardware along with two black hex screws. The red led bulb is for the methanol injection. Good luck.

A seatbelt by it's self offers far better protection than an airbag w/ no belt. That's a fact. How's a face going to get broken if you're wearing a belt?
Supplemental Restraint System - the seatbelt is still the primary restraint.

a seatbelt + airbag offers far better protection than a seatbelt w/ no airbag. that's a fact. it's not like the airbag does nothing -- thousands of crash tests can attest to this.

but the seatbelt does majority of the work right? i mean, i'm not saying airbags are pointless, but it's not like the seatbelt won't work without it...
| dnaL0R | 12-08-2006 09:02 AM |
i just don't think an airbag is THAT useful when you've got your setbelt on... i know it aids towards your safety, no doubt, but i've never heard of anyone saying, "the airbag saved my life." side airbag is a different story though, that i think will make a huge difference...

uh, TONS of people say "the airbag saved my life". i don't know where you got that idea.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/airbag.htm says "To date, statistics show that air bags reduce the risk of dying in a direct frontal crash by about 30 percent". an old, 1996 survey (before "smart airbags") says the figure was an 11 percent reduction back then.
moral of the story: an airbag won't be the greatest if you fly through the windshield because you didn't buckle up, but it does have a significant benefit when used in conjunction with the belt. a 30 percent reduction in fatal accidents is a lot...

i dont like airbags...search youtube and watch people setting them off. honestly, id rather have a nice nardi steering wheel with harness bar and harness :D
id rather enjoy some whiplash then a broken/burnt face from an airbag thank you.

gawd you guys are such asshats sometimes.
dude wants an aftermarket wheel
he's not asking for your opinion on airbags
to the OP:
i have an aftermarket wheel in my daily driver
I have it with cruise and horn and turn signal cancels
I will post photos to give you an idea of what it looks like
as far as the airbag bull...
i had this setup in my Legacy when it was totalled.

i walked away without a scratch. as did my other 2 passengers.
Ya know what FIRST thing the first responder said was?
....good thing you took that airbag out... or we'd be calling you an ambulance right now...
i'm 5'-nothing so i sit inches away from the steering wheel.
airbags arent for everyone guys.
i dont even sweat the fact that i dont have one.
let dude search for what he wants/needs without the ridicule.
especially when some of you have no clue what you're on about.
keep this thread on topic or posts will be deleted....

I don't want to resurrect an old thread, but I've been searching on the topic and this is kinda like what I'm asking.
I want to get an aftermarket steering wheel as well as I'm not happy with the stock WRX one. Instead of an STi one (or even just one off of a new Subaru), I'd like to get one from an S2000 (with airbag) or a E90 BMW (with airbag). Both cars have small, comfortable steering wheels. While I haven't driven a new GTi, I like their steering wheel too! (don't know diameter though).
I know its possible to have another brand steering wheel on one's subaru (anything is possible with enough money), but my question is: is it feasible on a somewhat tight budget? Like, would it be 400 dollars or less? Or would it require a lot of fabrication specially for the project that would be really expensive?
Thanks!

I've got an extra STI steering wheel I won on ebay w/o airbag. I'll have it wrapped in black or blue suede with red stitching and extra padding around the wheel. I'll just install my existing airbag in this one.
| PeteDucati | 01-01-2007 09:20 AM |
There are so many variables when trying to fit a non-universal wheel on any car. You'll definately lose your cruise control and if both airbag systems don't ignite in a similar way it may not go off anyhow. But the first issue would be the splines on the steering column - if they don't fit the wheel don't even bother trying to rig it.
Momo wheels start cheap and don't get too expensive ($250). The hub is only ~$80. And you can swap wheels whenever you feel fit.

IMO using a removable aftermarket steering wheel is the best way to keep an a-hole from stealing your ride, and helps with the chicks too:rolleyes: .
as for the airbag, from a frontal impact experience, I was safe with my seatbelt harness alone; the airbag only graced my nose. if airbags are that great, why don't WRC and F1 manufactures use them?
