thank you for your input. you answered my question well and i'm satisfied by your reply.

i'd understand if i wanted to paint it some other ugly color but i'm doing this to DECREASE the "bling" of my car. is that a bad thing?

personally i think that would look sweet only on a black car....yours. I think the wheels/exhaust setup would look nice.

Im kidding. Its something I havent seen done that much though. Good luck with it though. Youre gonna need paint that sustain the heat. Im sure its been done at one point. Just look around.

I've had mine painted for a while here's my car...I'm happy ;)
Tanabe SRM, left the tip "blingy"

Low-Gloss Black...engine/header paint = heat resistant up to 500*f. My FMIC pipes are also painted...

One reason for painting is the damage a single season of winter road salt does to stock metals. They rust prematurely. I'd like to know (or see a link) for paint adequate for muffler, exhaust painting.

krylon heat resistant paint works well, just go to you local auto store and they should have a bunch of paints to choose from. Mine has been painted for a over 1yr w/no problems

Hmmm, I'm thinking about buying a new SS Turboback down the road here soon. At this idea intrigues me. I could not care less about my car blinging, in fact, I'd rather it looked as stock as possible.
So here's my question: is there a downside to this (other than the fact the exhaust will look like it was harvested out of junkyard)? Would a couple of coats of paint have any adverse performance or longevity effects? I can definitely see where it might help protect against the upcoming winter salt.
Regards,
MAK

so your saying my exhaust looks like it came from a junkyard? :D There is no performance gain/loss by doing this mod, maybe it will prevent rust..i dunno? I live in NorCal so we dont have salty roads(except Lake Tahoe)...
I think the only benefit I get is at night when the CHP's are roaming the highway, no chrome fart can = no tickets for mods.

I believe apexi makes a n1 muffler in a shiny black color that can be welded on.
EDIT: Here is the site - http://www.apexi-usa.com/exhausts_universal.asp
Probably more then you want to spend. Spray paint would be cheaper.

i painted (repainted) my old stromung except for the tips w/ high temp engine paint... worked pretty well.
| Tobey | 09-09-2004 02:41 PM |
i painted my old greddy evo flat black and kept the tip polished. the freakin thing was HUGE, way too much attention from the highschool crowd and the cops.
i used plastikote wood stove black. it's a nice, high temp, flat black and after a full winter i could only find a few chips in the finish. it really held up great, so great in fact that i've toyed with the idea of doing my new prodrive axleback in the same fashion.

The chrome tip seems to hold up well. The smaller pipe coming out of the muffler to the chrome tip and the back of the muffler will rust.(sorry not familiar with exhaust nomenclature). I doubt someone could produce a perfect paint finish but it sure would look better than rust spots. In addition the key hole areas (trunk and sides) will tarnish easily (chrome comes off).

You guys have convinced me. My Stromung muffler is showing a little rust on the can and the hangers, but the tips still look decent. Well probably sand it down and paint the can/piping black and leave the tips chrome.
Do you what temp that "plastikote wood stove black" is rated at? I know the engine block paint is rated up to 500F.

The Krylon BBQ & Stove paint is rated to 600 degrees continuous, 1200 degrees intermittently, and prevents rust. It comes in flat black, aluminum, blue, red and green. I'm getting this from the Krylon catalog I have here at work (NAPA)

engine block paint isnt high enough. It will melt and burn and smell like ****. Ive got exhaust painted rated at 1500. You spray it on and then run the car so it bakes the paint on

Bump... because I like the look and am considering doing this to a turboxs turboback (the one with the magnaflow muffler) I'm getting next week. The polished muffler is gonna be like a mirror on the back of my car (just what I need  ). The flat black kinda gives it a "rally look".
BTW.... all you guys that say you've done it need to post up some pics!!!

Awesome! I'm definately doing that! Do you have any more pics you can post or e-mail me?? That would be awesome!
How did you prep the muffler for paint? Did youhave to sand it? Also, how long have you had it painted and how's it holding up?? Thanks!!!

do it with high temp paint.
if it can help you avoid a fix-it ticket, it'll be worth it.
