APR performance GT carbon mirror's

While at the SEMA show in Las Vegas I stumbled upon the APR booth. APR makes some very high quality parts. The GT mirrors caught my eye and I had to have a set. These mirrors can be purchased with a Silver or Black backing plate. The silver "almost" matches a silver car. I have a black car so I went with black.
When I took the mirrors out of the box I noticed a couple things off the bat.. This is real carbon fiber. Not a sticker and not an overlay. This is the real deal. The mirror housing itself weighs ounces. It feels like a empty soda can. The mounting plate is cast aluminum and seems over built. Top notch quality piece here..
Assembly of the mirrors are simple. The mirrors are well packed and even include two allen wrenches for assembly. 10 minutes later following the instructions the mirrors where together. Tighten the large allen tighter then you think you need too... This allen places pressure on the ball mount and holds the mirror in the positon you set it too.. Once the mirror is n the car you cant adjust this allen bolt.. I cranked mine down "tight" and the mirrors are rock solid. Take care when tightening the mirror pod allen screw. You could crack the carbon if you crank this down.. Adjust it slowly until the mirror pivots on the arm but will stay put once on the highway..
To install the mirrors on the car:
You need to remove the door panels. They are held on the car by two screws and some clips. Start with the windows rolled down.
first remove the screw in the door handles "pocket" or dish by the window switches. Pull up on the window switch assembly and unhook the plugs.
Remove the large gold screw that is now visable that holds the door panel on. Remove the screw hiding behind the door handle. Leave the door handle trim ring in place for now.. These break easy...
Next, pop the door panel off the door frame starting at the bottom. Nice fast pulls do the trick. Once you get to the top you will notice the door handle trim ring is holding the door on. Pull out and pop the trim ring off. If you use this method you will not break the ring because the panel itself pops the ring off evenly.
Lift the panel up and off the top clips. This sounds like alot of work but it takes 5 minutes.
Next remove the mirror backplate. This is a plastic piece that is snapped into rubber cups.. Just pull back on it.
You will find three gold screws and one black screw holding the stock mirror on. These can be SUPER tight. Use a large philps screw drive of the right size.. Press in HARD and turn or use a Plier on the handle of the screw driver. Press hard so the screw driver does not slip.. MIne where very tight...
Unplug the mirrors power connector and pull the mirror off the car.
Install of the new APR mirror is the reverse order... Just use the fatory screws to mount the APR mirror and baseplate to the door.
The stock mirrors are heavy. I set them on the scale and compared them to the APR's... 7 lb loss. when shutting the door you can feel the difference.
Here are some pics of my car with the mirrros. Sorry for the ****ty photo's. I have a 4 year old Digi cam and sometimes a green line appears in the photo's. I am hoping that one of my super good friends is going to buy me a new one for Xmas :)

You should get your camera fixed ;)

glilly had these... I have no doubt they are top notch quality, but they seem out of place on a modern car... they need to go on a 30s car that has a horn that goes aaoogggahh!;)

Teeny tiny!

You guys would hate what owners in Japan use! Ever see the Cusco's? They mount on the door itself and have a plate to block off the mirror mount. Light weight Race mirrors are just that.. Maybe APR should make a larger then stock set?

Clark, you have to see these mirrors in person to appreciate them. People in this forum are quick to give an honest opinion. My hread a little ways down on my mirrors was not well received either. I like my real race gear mirrors.

Yeah. Kinda shocked that people dont like them. I think they are tight as hell. Super high quality. Mike has them on my cars twin (or is my car his twin) and they look sweet. He removed Carbon Ganadors for them and he likes the APR's better. I think if people saw them in person they would appretiate how light weight, and delicate they are. A real race part.

I have seen them in person... they IMHO just don't follow the lines of the car that well... I have no doubt they are highly functional, and shave a little bit of weight off the car, but from a dress up point of view, I don't think they are that pretty... just my 2 cents...

Well, I like them alot! I think they look really nice on your car. I know the Cuscos ones you're talking about, I actually like the Craftsquare mirrors the best. But they are very pricey($500), and I don't think they make one for the WRX yet. If I have no luck with the Craftsquare ones, I will probably pick up a set of the APRs.
BTW, I think by using these mirrors will get rid of that annoying wind noise that's coming from the driver's side mirror when you're doing above 120mph. Can you verify that AZScoobie?:p

Those mirrors are pretty nice. Only thing I don't like is the exposed bolts and the embossed apr logo(makes it look ricey, probably cuz every time I see it I think of that comp. apc that sells all the rice crap)

I dont mind the bolts as much as I do the logo. Are there any other companys that sell these?

I'd like a set for my WRX, too, if I could find one that doesn't have advertising all over it.

You're right, the ones I have on my WRX right now look awesome, but I'd really like to have better functionality for rear viewing, especially when in traffic. I could always go back to the "elephant ears" stock mirrors, but, no, that just wouldn't do!

Just installed mine tonight. They are alittle small, but the view is way better than I expected. Not sure if it's the quality of the glass or that they are convex, but I think they are at least as good as stock.
Unforunately, after installation, I realized that one of the "fake" allen heads was missing. I hope that I will be able to replace it without having to swap out the mirror.
Thanks to AZScoobie your directions made the installation a breeze.
Well except for the one mirror screw that I dropped to the bottom of the door on both sides.

| sagelwwa | 01-30-2006 11:51 PM |
Yeah, since it's back I will post too lol. I have these on my WRX and am going to transfer them to the STi soon. They rock and have great wide angle lenses. The only thing that sucks is getting the factory mirrors off the car because they are SCREWED on, not bolted and the screws are sooooo tight. There is also a gap between the screws and the inside of the door so you have to be careful not to drop them in the door. Putting the APR's on is a breeze and takes no time. They bolt right up and look great imho.

i went from stock to the APR mirrors to Ganadors.for me there were pro's & con's for both of the mirrors.i loved the view from the APR's ,they are a little small but overall the viewing area is great & the Ganadors ,being that they are for a right hand drive car.i can't out of the pass. side mirror.which makes rev. into a stall a pain.and i don't know if its just me , but they kinda make a whitsling sound @ high speed.
