APR Wind splitter install

Sorry I did not know where else to post. It is a body enhancement but also a handling enhancement. Anyway I could not find any how to guides so did one up myself.
I received the APR CF splitter and after opening noticed that there were no instructions on how to install the thing on the front of the car. I don't know what it is but, it seems that whenever I buy something regardless of how careful I am of making sure the packaging is sealed and etc. I always seem to get things without instructions. Do I send it back? Hell no - figure it out....
I emailed APR and recieved a prompt message. Although it was not as detailed as I would have liked it was a start. The email confirmed one of my fears. The bumper skin would have to come off the car. I was half dreading this but, also looking forward to the opportunity to adjust the skin since it did not have a factory fit on the driver side.
Pulling the skin off was not as bad as I thought it would be. It did confirm though that there was some slight damage to the skin previously and that some hack body shop had put it back together. Although they did nice body work they applied some short cuts to putting the skin back on. Luckily, I had taken the skin off friday night so I could go to the suby parts house the next day. I had found that instead of using the correct plastic adjusters and replacing the fender guide they used small sheet metal screws to re-attach the skin on the driver side. (********!)
I acquired the correct replacment parts and headed back home.
A friend of mine stopped by to help out. We both really did not know where to start since niether of us had ever installed anything like this before. Also, we were both afraid of screwing up a really nice CF part.

Parts list:
APR CF splitter
double sided 3M tape
4 - additional 1" 1/4 bolts with lock nuts
1 - 36" aluminum square/box tubing cut in two 18" pieces
2 - subaru fender adjusters
Assorted spare plastic clips/fasteners
Rubbing alcohol or window cleaner
Tools:
Tape measure
Drill
Hack saw or cutoff tool
Allen wrenchs
Assorted end wrenchs
It appears that I would have to be a bit creative. From looking at the splitter which is completely flat and my bumper skin it looked like I could have issues with attaching the splitter and securing it correctly. The brake ducts for the STI were going to cause some problems since the WRX does not have them and make the install simpler. With an STI which I have the mounting would cause me some anxiety.
We lined up the skin to the splitter. The rear most bolts holding the side splitter brake air duct(nearest the wheel) would need to be removed on both sides. Now the skin will fit realatively flat on the splitter.
I drilled three holes on each bottom side of the skin and through the splitter.
I drilled two holes on the inner most front side (near the bottom air intake alonside the brake air duct)
Performed a test fit with bolts loosely secured
Thoroughly clean the bottom side of the skin (flat) Clean the CF splitter.
Apply 3M tape to bottom of skin.
Have a friend help line up and guide to the previously drilled holes. Press fit the skin to the CF splitter. Remind friend not to touch the tape and once it is attached do not pull up on it!
Install bolts supplied with splitter you will have 6 bolts and nuts left over if you are bolting to an STI.
Use the longer 1"1/4 bolts in the front two holes.
Attached rods in desired fashion (needs to be done prior to fitment to car)
Re-attach and secure completed piece to car.
With the car safely in the air (ramps or jackstands) Take one to the 18" box tubing pieces and test fit. You will need to drill an appropiately sized hole in both ends. It will attach to where the original windage tray bolted (front jack point)
Loosely bolt the tubing to the jack point and rest on top of the CF splitter. For better rigidity I angled it about 60 degrees. Mark where you will apply the 3M tape, drill holes into splitter. Perform test fit. Remove from car.
Apply the 3m tape to the tubing. Assemble under car and bolt up using the other set of 1"1/4 bolts.
Now you have a sick looking ride.....
After thoughts:
Wow this piece looks really awesome on the car. The only concern I have now is if I need to remove the CF splitter I will need to take the bumper skin off with it. I have a few ideas for a later modification to make it easier to remove with out the bumper skin. You can still easily get to th oil filter and drain plug.

All you have to do is contact Peter at APR, and he'll furnish you with instructions. I just installed mine on my 06 STi yesterday. I'd be a little leary of two-sided tape. APR doesn't send any, or recommend using any. The splitter is much too heavy to trust to two-sided tape. They sent 12 bolts with it. I ended up using 10 of them.
It does look great, and it's half the price of a Chargespeed V1 lip !

did you read the instructions? two sided tape seals the splitter but you still use bolts. The APR instructions are ****. I really don't care what the manufacturer says. The splitter is desigend for the WRX!

Glad it helped you. I was not very happy with APR and thier instructions. The first thing they reccomended was taking it to a shop. I do most of my own stuff. This seemed something that I had the skill just no where to start.

Why the hell would you need to take off the bumper skin? Double sided tape? lol. Oh and you need to grind/cut off the remainder of those screws that hang down.
I did mine solo with no instructions and it was a peice of cake. I also made a very simple custom bracket to provide extra support at the rear of the peice under the car. There is a nice little spot to attach to right next to the oil pan. Also had to pick up longer hardware than what was provided for some of the holes.
If you have an 04-05 STi you have to drill holes in the diffuser that correspond to the bolts used to attach the stock little bumber flare thingy's. <can't remember what those are called. Take your time with a tape measure and some basic geometry and you wont need to remove the bumper. Then replace the oem hardware with your own and you're done. As far as cutting the shape or how far forward you want it thats all up to you.
HINT: cut out where your oil drain and filter are to make oil changes a breeze.;)

i wish i would have thought of that while i was installing mine.. i had to put a paint tray under the oil filter because i was in a rush and didn't have time to take off the splitter for my next oil change.
now i've got a nice cutout though and it doesn't get in the way at all :D

I documented my experience to potentially help others. If you all note I do not claim to be an expert body man or other. This is how I installed mine. It can withstand high speeds without fluttering and is secured to the car.
You are a stud I'm quite impressed....to each his own. I would be interested to see pictures and hear how you bolted the wind splitter to the bumper skin without taking it off unless you used glue or you are an octopus LOL.

I left out some of the details on how I did it so I will add them for everyone's benefit. This is only good for 04-05 STi's. I did not take any pics of the install but I can add some of the finished product.
Keep in mind I was a carpenter for 10 years so this stuff comes easy to me.
1. PREP - Get the car up on jackstands and layout some cardboard or blankets to keep your nice new diffuser from getting scratched. The cardboard it ships with works great just take out all the staples. Have a floor jack ready to help hold the peice.
1a. Remove all of the hardware under your bumper cover that is used to attach the splitters. 3 bolts each side.
2. CENTERLINE - Measure the back edge of the diffuser, the long straight side. Now find the center and mark it.
3. WIDTH - Measure the distance between the two bolts you just removed under the bumper that are furthest from eachother. From one side of the car to the other right in front of the wheel.
4. FORWARD POSITION - Measure from the edge of your wheel well to one of the same bolt holes you measured the width of above. Should only be a couple inches. This is gonna determine how far forward or back your splitter sits under the car. BE ACCURATE!
5. DRILL HOLES - Using your centerline repeat these steps with the remaining 4 holes and transfer them to your diffuser. Now drill the holes with the correct size drill bit.
6. MOCK UP - Jack that SOB up under the car nice and easy. Loosely attach the first 2 bolts you layed out and jack it up the rest of the way. Now is when you have to decide all of your cuts. Mine came extra wide so I cut it down a bit. Also layout where your oil drain and filter are.
7. CUT - Cut and sand as you like.
8. ATTACH - Bolt it on using the oem threaded metal clip things and whatever length bolts will reach. You will need to get longer ones for a couple spots, don't remember which. You may also want to get some spacers to make up the difference with the longer bolts and help prevent over tightening and damaging the diffuser. There will be some bending of the plastic that occurs if you don't do this. You now have 6 attachment points plus the 2 adjustable rods the diffuser comes with. I would advise making a bracket that attaches some where at the back edge of the diffuser under the car, you will see why.
9. RODS - Layout the 2 threaded rods however you like. Pull off the fog light covers and drill a large hole in the bumper cover via a holesaw behind where the cover goes. You need this to access behind and inside the bumper. You will never see this hole, just make sure not to drill out any of the slots where the cover snaps back on. It has to be at least big enough to get your fingers in there to get the nuts on. Recommend 1 1/2".
10. FINISH - Pat yourself on the back you're all done!:banana:
Note* I removed the stock undertray and also had to trim up the plastic brake ducting that hangs down.

anybody that has an 05 sti...if u see my splitter doesnt it look different than the 04 ones?? (the sides dont stick as much as the 04s. Is this the riht splitter for the sti??

The one I got for my '05 was wider than yours. Mine hung out the sides about 2.5 inches on both sides. I trimmed it down so it's only like an inch now. I don't have the the extra little splitters that you have and didn't want mine to stick out that far.

When I installed my splitter there was hardly anything to be found on the forums and websites. Now there are others installing wind splitters and it appears everyone has thier own little tweaks. Its all good!. I had seen the rods on the outside and had a hard time deciding inside our out side. I settled for inside because I liked the looks with no functional difference. Also, I used a ROTO ZIP to cut a hole where the oil filter goes and I made some braces from square aluminum tubing to secure the back portion of the splitter (bolts to where the plastic undertray was... I know every one laughs at 3m tape but, realize all of your emblems are attached with the stuff (have you ever tried to remove one!) My greddy radiator shroud came with it too and so did my perrin wing brace! - Holy crap 3M tape has become the equivalent of duct tape :)

Cool i didnt know that thast cool..well i got it new for like 230 so i think i can survive with that template lol
Cutting the oil part wouldnt change the spitter functionallity n make it kinda weak? i mean ur cutting a part of the cf so it can be broken easier ?

Mine extends maybe an 1/8th inch past the bumper skin (by wheel openings)
I cut a hole in mine below the oil filter. I was concerned that it would weaken the splitter. But, I installed braces on the back of the splitter using aluminum square tubing. Actually the carbon fiber seems very durable even without the braces it was a real biatch to cut even with a rotozip. I can send pix of the underside if anyone is interested.

I've always wanted this splitter. Can you guys post some shots from underneath? I want to see how far it goes back. Is this under tray easy to cut?

Mine looks just like InSTIgates.
The splitter goes to the front of the front of the the wheel well. Or just about 2 inches or so past the oil filter towards the back. But, it depends on how you install it. Also the plastic undertray is removed. Check my zoints profile for pix. I will upload a view from underneath later today.

And i also used 10 of the bolts..u really feel a difference over 100mph also DO NOT put it too much to the front. 3 inches or 3 1/2 is way more tahn enouigh..more than that the air can just break itn ull say bye bye bumper n splitter

To drill the holes for the oil filter and plug did you use a hole drill, just a drill bit, or something else?
I don't have a rotozip and want to cut the holes for before attaching it.
Do you have to use the support bars? I have seen lots of cars without them but don't konw about how well it would work.

Nice now careful not to crack it, CF breaks very easily. I broke my Kaminari CF splitter twice

Tape both sides of CF before drilling/sawing through it. That will help to prevent it from splintering.

I used a dremel to cut a U shape at the edge of the splitter, under the oil filter. Now I don't make a mess when changing oil. Then I put some of that plastic edging around the cut, to make it look nice !

that is a hot spoiler but the 2008 5DR spoilers look beter well atleast the only 1 they have right now lol
