Are these windshields the same

I have an '04 STI that just had it's windshield destroyed by a piece of metal kicked up on the freeway. While looking for a replacement I'm finding that the 04 year is ~$700 for STI or WRX. The '02 WRX is less than half the cost. Does anybody know if these are interchangable functionally? Is there some minor difference that really doesn't matter or am I stuck with the expensive one?
Thanks,
Pulp
PS Once fixed I'm probably going to sell the car. If it turns out to be too much of a pain to get fixed (been quoted 10 days for a windshield by one dealer) I may trade it in the way it sits. Of course I'd get screwed on the price since thats the dealers job so anybody in the market check the for sale section. I'll cross post the for sale info in the cars for sale section.
Thanks,

So...your getting rid of a great car because the dealer can't get you a windshield in under 10 days.
| PulpFiction | 03-28-2005 12:51 AM |
LOL, I guess it sounded like that.
No, I'm getting rid of the car because I'm working in Los Angeles and never get to enjoy the car. Instead I just drive slow on freeways, wear out the clutch in 1st gear (I hope not, just being sarcastic) and bounce the whole time through potholes and poorly maintained freeways.
What I was trying to say was if it is too much of a pain to get the windshield replaced then I will try to sell the car with it broken (if legal to do this) or trade it in as is.

Aren't the STI's equipped with some type of light weight glass? Maybe that's why it's so expensive?
| PulpFiction | 03-28-2005 01:35 PM |
I did some searches before posting and from what others have said the STI has a lightweight rear but not front window. The EVO has both lightweight front and rear. Also since the cost between the standard WRX and the STI are the same for 2004 I'd assume the glass is the same too.

I would get in the phone book and do some calling. I had my windshield replaced last week, there's a big difference in prices between companies. Some things to ask about: manufacture of the glass, tinting, and that you want ONLY new stock trim installed. 03 wrx cost me $215 total to install at a local glass dealer. It wasn't the cheapest place but they just down the street. Sorry don't know about the STI but someone told that wagon and sedans are different. I don't see why there would be a difference between a wrx sedan or sti. You might call some companies and see what they list.

Here is what I'm coming up with:
02 Subaru Impreza $368.81
03 Subaru Impreza $368.81
04 Subaru Impreza $707.39
04 Subaru Impreza STI $707.39
05 Subaru Impreza $707.39
05 Subaru Impreza STI $707.39
All prices are installed and from the same online service. I'm not going to give them a free plug since I know nothing about them but they're easy enough to find using google.
The obvious assumption is that Subaru made a change to the windshield for the Impreza in 2004. My question is if anybody knows what the change was? Was it simply a change to the black border around the edge or something like that or was there a shape change. I'm just trying to avoid wasting $350 if I don't need to and of course getting the correct fitment.
They make no distinction between the Impreza and the WRX as expected. They don't list the rear glass for either the WRX or STI, 04 so I couldn't confirm a difference in it.
The price you got for the 03 WRX is obviously better than what I posted here but what I'm getting quoted for the 04 has been pretty much the same with the dealer selling the raw glass the cheapest at $648. Most other places sell the glass "installed" for more and don't just sell the glass by itself except for the body shop which wanted $850!!!

Thanks,
I will end up going that route once I can find out if I can accept the "older" windshield or if I should ask for it. The couple of places I checked with said it was a dealer only item so I'm not expecting (but still hoping) there to be a big difference in price.

For grins and giggles I called the cheapest place I found (not where I got mine installed). For an 04 Subaru Impreza STI non-heated ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***$210*** installed www.triumphautoglass.com

I suggest buying a good used winshield Since you plan on selling it. Plus most 04 windshields have not seen much use yet. It should be an easy find now that every kid on the block has one now(18yr olds in my hood have more moded subarus than hondas!!!???) I own a 2002 wagon and a 2004 sti and the windows look exactly the same. I believe in japan is the only place the have lightened windshields due to safety issues the US cars do not. Call 1-800-subaru-3 and ask for a reputable installer. Even subaru dealerships use outside sources for this type of work.

I know the wagons and sedans have different windshields but I'm not sure between the different years.
| Colin84 | 03-28-2005 09:02 PM |
Later model impreza's have the radio antenna embedded in the windshield while earlier models have it on the A pillar.
| wagons_ho! | 03-28-2005 09:16 PM |
It's the antenna thing...
| Mulder | 03-28-2005 09:27 PM |
The radio antenna is in the REAR window of the 04/05's, not the front windshield. AFAIK the reason for the difference in price is because of the heating elements for the wipers that are embedded in the base of the windshield, I'm pretty sure the STi has those. It's easy enough to check and see if they are there. If that's the only difference, and you can do without the heaters, you should be able to use the cheaper windshield.
| wagons_ho! | 03-28-2005 09:32 PM |
The antenna is in the front windshield. Look at the difference between the clear glass on the 02/03 and the "blob" at the top of the windshield behind the mirror - that's the antenna.
| Mulder | 03-28-2005 09:40 PM |
What's in the windshield is something else, I know for a fact the antenna is in the rear window. At least on the USDM cars, maybe it's different up there in Canada?
| wagons_ho! | 03-28-2005 09:44 PM |
I was told by the glass guy (I want to get rid of my antenna) that the antenna is in the front windshield... but perhaps, as you say, that's here.... or he's on smack or something... nothing more from me on this one...
...the difference in price is because of the heating elements for the wipers that are embedded in the base of the windshield, I'm pretty sure the STi has those.
The STi has no wiper heaters. The '05s have a screen print blob above the rear view to make up for the mini-visor that was removed. I had mine replaced and had to go OEM because if that. (there was no 'aftermarket' glass that had the tint.) I never saw the final price since it went straight to insurance, but I believe it may have been in the $700 range.
That said I have no idea what the difference in the '04 would be. They actually installed non-OEM glass in my '05 first, and it fit fine, cost was maybe $250. But when I pointed out the tint thing they redid it with OEM.
At any rate I don't see a reason to spend more than ~$250 for your glass; I am pretty sure the first one they put in mine was generic for all WRX's. Oh and my radio worked fine while the generic glass was in there too.

Thanks for the info guys. I went and looked at the car and if the heated windshield is obvious then I don't have one.
The antenna is in the rear window.
I will call triumph tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Not that a website really means anything but they look good on the surface and it sounded like you liked them (sort of).
Here is a closeup of the rear window. The antenna are the top lines that are a little darker. If yours is the same you should notice that the top section never connects with the defrost heater elements.

Since I had the camera out and made the directory to host the pics here is the windshield:

austinpike is correct
Im replacing my windshield too. They brought one out without the built in visor. I said no, now Im waiting on a Dealer Provided one. FYI the cost from the Dealer for me is $404.31
Its not heated but has the visor built in (or so Im told)

FYI: When I had mine replaced I had the option of installing a windshield with a darker tinting across the top. I think it was the same price but don't hold me to it; I choose the factory style light green tint. So for those replacing windshields, you might check into that option. Also if they don't have the tinting about the rear view mirror, you might check into the full tinting across the top if that would appeal to you.

I'm looking at either an Acura TL, waiting for the new Lexus IS350 Click Here or possibly the new Infiniti M35. I'm leaning towards the TL but haven't given the M a close look and of course the IS isn't here yet.
Thought I'd try to steal a direct link of the IS here:

Edit: If I'm going to consider the M I might as well look as a GS300 instead. Just looked at the M on carsdirect and saw the damn thing costs more than I originally thought. 40k + a 10k option package to get what I would want in it. The Lexus is better for the same price.

I checked with them too this morning and its going to be $196 installed at my house. Don't be fooled by their Internet 25 dollar off coupon. Call them instead or at least in addition to. With the coupon it was $226 plus tax installed. They are going to come out tomorrow to replace it too.
Props to WRX03 for pointing me to these guys. I guess I'll be selling the car with a replaced windshield instead. And now I'll get to drive it until then too.
There was that other crazy idea of putting on some Pilot Sport II tires (softer and quieter), adjustable suspension set on "very soft" and adding a lot of dynamat. Then I would only have the manual trans to hate while in traffic. $3-4k but I guess that would be another thread to start.

The windshield was replaced today for about $200 including new rubber moulding. The new windshield had the mirror clip already installed and the classic blue fade along the top. Looks great, installation was quick and uneventful. I'd recommend triumph auto glass based on my experience today.

PulpFiction - How is it different from the stock glass you had replaced? Do you notice ANY differences at all? I'm in SoCal as well and need to replace my windshield.
There has to be different qualities of glass out there, or there wouldn't be price differences. So confusing...
Thanks!!

I would say the replacement glass is a little better. It has the blue fade tint along the top and I like that more. I haven't noticed any additional noise coming through the windshield (this was a problem in a luxury car I test drove with an aftermarket windshield) and the fit appears to be perfect. The new rubber moulding appears exactly the same as the original but it could be inferior, I couldn't tell. It came with the mirror bracket already installed so there was no guesswork on where to glue it and I expect the glue to be the same or better.
From what I researched there is a minimum thickness and glass type that all windshields must meet for safety. In the case of the STI I would think they would have gone minimum for weight savings. The luxury car (lexus) definately should have been thicker.
I just sold the car today so I can't go get any other info. For my money triumphautoglass did a great job. FYI: My boss needed a windshield for his BMW 330i and called them after I did. Almost as cheap and he was very satisfied too.

The antenna IS in the rear SIDE window of WAGONS... It's definately in the rear window of the sedans. Open your trunk and look up where there used to be speakers. You'll see a little black box with wires leading to your window..... that's the antenna booster.
I was curious when I first bought my car and noticed... hey I don't have an antenna... so of course I looked in the front window first... then to the back... I followed the wires and bam... there you have it. Of couse I don't use it anymore since I got XM :)
BTW: I got two quotes online for my '05 windshield for approx $300. I confirmed with Safelite for approx $200 they called me back 15 mins later and said they could not get the window in ... I then said "now what" I was told it was dealer only. Not sure if there is some difference with the '04 .. unfortunately I never tried Triumph ... my car is in the shop now.
