Wrong, Fred. MS will qualify on pole and will be comfortably ahead by the first corner. DC in his improved and Michelin shod McLaren will give him a real battle, but MS and the Red Cars will prevail.
Actually, I'm also really excited about the prospects for Sauber and Renault this year. Also, now that Jaguar and Arrows have the same engines, will this bode well for Lauda, or will it be a huge disaster. I'm betting disaster.
The Asiatech motors made Arrows quite fast last year, and I'm counting on the Minardi boys to score several points this year.
The Honda teams ought to be much better than they have been the past several years, but they haven't been able to get back to their previous level. I think that they'll be mid-packers at best this year.

I'd like to see McNish in the points as much as anybody, but I'll be quite suprised if it happens in the first race.

Hahahaha I was reading the title thinking, "What?! They moved the Telstra Rally of Australia up to this early in the season?!"

1) DC
2) Kimi
3) Ralfie
4) MS
5) McNish
6) Chili-dog
the mclarens have been wicked-fast in testing... here's to hoping! i think that kimi will lead for a while, but will be passed "in the pits" by dc.
chilli dog will take an extra 40 second stop to eat 2 chili dogs in his second stop. this will bump him back to 6th (from 3rd). however, he will be talked about extensivly when he puts a move on schumi that forces him into the grass, but not out of the race.
all the drivers anti-ass-itch suits work to perfection.
kimi will remove his visor tear-off on lap 37. it will get sucked up by Irvine, block his radiator and cause the cosworth engine to expire on lap 42. :D

The performance of the final version of the F2001 (Ferrari is running a breathed-upon version of that car) was too convincing during the last race for me to be against the Scuderia.
1) Schumi Sr.
2) JPM
3) Schumi Jr.
4) Kimi!
5) Rubens
6) DC
I think that the Toyotas will surprise, in that they won't be as slow as everyone thinks. They'll still be slow, but not THAT slow, like rolling chicane slow.
The Jags will be slow, possibly slower than the Toyotas, and Jordan/BAR will both be about the same.

1.) Juan Pablo Montoya (he'll beat Schumie into the first corner)
2.) M. Schumacher (he'll keep the heat on, maybe even play dirty)
3.) Rubens B. (although DC could hold his own)
4.) David Coulthard
5.) Half (I mean Ralf) Schumacher
6.) Kimi Raikonnen (give him a bit more time)
I think Toyota still needs to play with other cars before they move up. I wish BAR would get its act together, would love to see Villeneuve do something. As for Jaguar, they made a huge mistake putting Nikki Lauda in as chieftain. That and I think Eddie is a punk.

OH YEAH IT'S TIME!!!
1. Ralf Schumacher
2. Michael Schumacher
3. Juan Pablo Montoya
4. David Coulthard
5. Nick Heidfeld
6. Kimi Raikkonen
Season predictions:
Fred Zaplitny will predict JPM to win...ALOT.
Jokes will be made at Chokehard's expense.
Juan Pablo will set the world record for chili dogs consumed at a single GP.
J Colman will be the surprise of the year in the new DED F1/02. It may be just a stolen wing and 3 tires right now, but just you wait.
Tardface will make a triumphant return.
Pitbabes will be posted. And since Fred got us started this year, we'll kick it off with one for him:

1) Michael
2) Coulthard
3) JPM
4) Heidfeld
5) Kimi
6) Villeneuve
I think Rubens and Ralf will collide, and someone will grap on Coulthard's tired, but he will be far enough ahead of Chili Dog that he will be able to retain 2nd place.

I think tires are going to be the key ingredient in Melbourne. The track has a very low grip surface so it is going to come down largely to whether B or M starts off with the right compound.
I'm a little surprised how competitive the Ferrari is. Obviously the lap times will comes down quite a bit for qualifying, but I didn't expect an updated car to dominate that much. With over a second to the rest of the field, MS has to be the strong favorite. And since this is the old car, reliability should be the least of the concerns.
I'll go:
MS
DC
RB
JPM
NH
GF
It's nice to see some F1 fans in here. I do my F1 posting over at atlasF1.com, but it nice to see other perspectives.

I think that some teams weren't showing all of the cards, but a 1.5 second advantage is pretty convincing. I suspect that it will be less in qualifying, but let's not forget how authoritative the Ferraris were at Suzuka. An updated version of this car should still be very fast, because I didn't hear of any dramatic gains from any of the other teams in the off season.
I don't think that they'll walk away with the race, and I still think that someone will wind up in front of Rubens (unfortunately...he's a nice guy, just not consistent enough). Places 3-6 will be interesting, I think. I still look for the top two to be the brothers Schumacher.
As an aside, how good was it to see those cars rolling around on TV, to begin yet another season of fun and drama? I felt comforted in a strange way, as if all was right with the world again.

Predicting the Unpredictable...
I'll have to disagree w/Dr. WOT about the tire factor, simply because mfr's have been at this same circuit, and they both will have a good idea of what is needed here.
Having said that, here is my late entry, as Friday practices are done, and we are awaiting Saturday's first sessions... As you will see, my predictions are not based upon the Friday practice sessions, but on the last couple of races of last season, and will be wrong anyways!
:)
1 - MS
2 - JPM
3 - RB
4 - Ralphie
5 - Kimi
6 - DC

DC is getting beat by a little boy. Terrible isn't it.
I hope the whole season follows suit, and he is forced to retire. In retirement he can continue his womanizing until his wang falls off.
Go Kimi, just dont get top good and beat The Almighty Chili Dogger.

It's great to be back in action again. We didn't run in the latter half of the second session as there was a problem with the left rear wheel, so I didn't get a quick run on new tyres which was a shame...
On the otherhand, I sorta agree w/ya on the season deal... I don't think that DC has what it takes to beat MS for the championship, his consistancy is a problem. Kimi might have what it takes, and I'm hoping he does...

final practice before qualyfying. Ferrari look strong!
Toyota are doing a superb job.
Yoong looks in trouble! he is outside the 107% time consistently.
Button is doing well against Truli as Truli is renowned as a fast one lap driver.
Jaguar, oh dear!
McLaren and Williams look very close.
Oh, it's raining!!!!!!!!!

Wheeee! F1 predictions are back! These might be more fun than watching the race! Well, not really.
here is my prediction
1. Michael Shumacher
2. Juan "Chili Dog" Montya
3. Ruebens "grap on my tired" Barichello
4. Ralph Shumacher
5. Kimi "dc in mirrors" Raikkonen
6. Mika Salo
DC will put his car into the tire barrier when Kimi ignites his smoke screen on turn 1. Yoong will fail to qualify and will spend the rest of the race handing off chili dogs to JPM in the pits.

What a race, if you can call it that. I was at least glad to see Mark Webber do well in front of the home crowd though, even if it was sort of by default. Like they said, he didn't screw up when Salo started pressuring him, in fact Salo did. Good for him.
Ryouga--stop making predictions like that :)
A rather disappointing season opener.

As it turned out I was vindicated, but mostly because Michelin was caught out by the cooler conditions, rather that not being ready for the surface itself. But that basically goes back to my original point that tires are the wildcard.

I wish some of the other big players could have mixed it up, would have made for a bit more excitment. I did enjoy the Michael-Montoya battle though, first the pass by chili dog, then Michael on the outside....great stuff.
