Bathurst 24hr race - Australia
Hey guys,
Tune into the coverage of the Bathurst 24hr race starting Saturday 2pm Australian time (Friday in U.S). There are a few STi's running in this race which will sort the men from the boys.

If you want to know what is going to break on an STi this is the place to find out.

Fox and Speed chanel will replay it in the U.S.A

This is an international event so you will see some nice cars.

Watch out for car 60 ....:D
LordBass 11-17-2003 12:41 PM

Bathurst truly is the Great Race.. Wish I still had Speed Channel (thanks, Comcast  )

Any chance for commentary from Murray Walker? :D

Best of luck!

There's supposed to be a live webcast on the site but last year there was more traffic than bandwidth. But hopefully thy've improved it for this year.

Two different events.
ANZAC_1915 11-17-2003 02:07 PM

But the regular mountain race is around this time of year too.

Is the normal race V8 Supercars now?
DBAsteve 11-17-2003 02:51 PM

The V8's were moved to October 10 and this 24hr production car race was slotted in November. Last year the 24hr event clashed with some European races and a lot of teams didn't have time to move their gear down to Australia.

There are quite a few European teams running in this event.

It's a fast/hard track (6.2km) which is a good test of endurance.
Penguinking 11-17-2003 10:40 PM

the run down (panorama hill?) looks scary as #@#$%!!! i drove that track...in Pro Race Driver
tt_ttf 11-18-2003 05:08 PM

It's a fun track to drive on ;)

But an easy one to screw up as well

I missed it this year but saw the coverage of last year's race. Does anyone else think the Monaros are a bit more race prepped than the other entries?

The Monaro's are as eligible as a Williams Formula 1 in a production car race.
The Monaro is a GM media machine to sell cars with 1/10 the power and reliability. It's not what the race is all about.

It is a credit to Holden (GM) for making a purpose built 24hr machine that can't be beaten though.

The 911 GT3 was the first production car over the line and they did a great job. Awesome car to watch.

DBA Steve
Not to hijack, but can you direct me to a good website or other source for Monaro tuner and racing parts? As you know the car will be marketed here by GM as the GTO. I know someone who will be buying one and wants to set it up for the track (road course). I'd like to help him out. Thanks.

Contact Paul at APS Engineering. These guys are ex-GM Engineers that know as much as anyone about this car.

Thanks fir the info.
I appreciate it.

Sorry to hijack but the moanro is eligible. If you want one ask garry of GRM to build you one (the monaro you see in the race is only for racing though). So why GRM and not holden? GRM is contracted by holden to guild the cars similar to GRM and HSV or BMW and M. In saying that however all of the group one cars are only for racing and usually built by a speciality builder.

It should also be pointed out that nations cup i.e. group one runs on a parity based formula not production based formula. I think that before (long time ago) nations cup was production based but the cars were unreliable and unsafe to drive at speed, therefore they made it parity based.

Although the lead by the monaro was huge you must also remember that the two cars suffered no major problems (unlike the lambo which suffered several tyre problems, engine for ferrari and moragn, and crashed for many other), had the best Australian drivers (all v8 supercar drivers that regularly drive faster cars at 10/10th), have the best funded, most experienced, and best prepared team in the race.

In short they did deserve to win........

A few years ago they put a big kink in the straight before the left hander into pit lane for that very reason.

The cars were getting too fast and unstable and there was a couple of VERY nasty crashes and at least one death that I can remember.

There's no denying that Gary Rogers has built a Beast of a machine.
I just take the view of the guys that race with Procar all season and have the 24hr as a test of skill and endurance of the team to finish off the year.

I watched those beasts go around for 24hrs and they weren't even trying until the last three laps. Full credit for GRM building an unbeatable beast now lets try and find it some competition.

Anyway I think there is enough debates going on else ware on this topic.

So which part of the car is genuine Monaro......
Only joking!
Jerry C 11-28-2003 02:13 AM

Congratulations on your performance!! The Car looks WELL done.
What engine are you running?? (details please)
Are the STI's competitive in thier class, or are you just better than the rest?
Thanks for the TV tip, I will be watching intently!

monaroCountry 11-29-2003 12:55 AM

hahah Thats ok DBAsteve.

Anyway most the the drivers (except brock and pretty) are professional v8 supercar drivers. These guys lap way faster than 2 min 15sec (fast lap in the 24hr) murph lapped a 2min 6sec in this years 1000. So yes lapping a 2min 19-30 sec would be a breeze for these guys.

Cheers

The STi's certainly hold their own in production car racing. This season the EVO won the series followed by this STi pictured with the second STi coming in at 5th place.
