How long do you plan on racing your Suby? part 1

How long do you plan on racing your Suby?
What I mean is how many miles do you get to on the odo before you retire a Suby from racing? 100,000? My '02 WRX just turned 60K and this is just its second year of track days. I am wondering how many years the motor, tranny, body, etc. have in them before I have to start worrying about problems.

Thanks,
Pete

I don't think it's predicatable. Depends on so many things and would be a crap shoot even if you weren't racing.

I've never kept a car past 100K but with the Suby I am thinking that a 2.5 litre motor rebuild might be fun when this one gets too old. Who knows though, I might be sick of it by then!
bl_easy 06-24-2006 01:26 PM

 I started racing my Subaru when there were already 105,xxx miles on the clock.
Scoob5555 06-24-2006 01:37 PM

Autoxing my 1996 with over 117k. No plans to stop until it shakes apart. No track days, tho.
OneArmedScissor 06-24-2006 01:55 PM

yeah, you COULD technically keep these things going forever. I have 74k on my subaru, haven't raced it yet, but honestly if someone doesn't buy it I'm gonna put it in locked storage and start tracking it when I return from Japan!
flyboymike 06-24-2006 03:11 PM

Getting long in the tooth just means it's time for an engine swap and a cage. I trust most of the mechanical bits to last quite awhile, and if not, replacing them isn't too bad. But, things like a/c and the general niceness of the interior will likely deteriorate. That really is the perfect excuse for me to retire it as a daily driver and turn it into a proper racecar.
MattNJ2.8 06-24-2006 03:29 PM

Just under 200k on the subie's odo. Still eats dirtroads very well
Pete Holt 06-24-2006 04:53 PM

Well, these responses make me very happy. For a split second I was thinking of not tracking the WRX much past 100K. (Must have been old age trying to sneak in) I guess I will just use broken parts as an excuse to upgrade. :D
RB5 Clone 06-24-2006 06:01 PM

My girlfriend Tulip the rally RS has 120K+ on the clock. More than 7k of those are stage rally or rallyx or "brisk TSD" miles. 3 motors, 2 gearboxes, 3 front bumper covers, etc etc.

20 rallies in the logbook, 12 rallyXes, 5 or 6 brisk TSDs, and who knows how many test/training days at Team O'Neil.

but the shell is original! Will run on and on and on until she gets rolled into a ball.

99 L, rallyx and back roads bomber since '02 112k on the odo. When she dies, I'll stop racing her.

Still on first motor and trans thankfully. :)
Rally_wgn 06-24-2006 09:45 PM

i'm gonna start soon, 215k on the odo and the motor and the tranny. But I swapped out the seats to WRX

Don't fear the odo.

old age is just an excuse for more hardcore parts
speedyHAM 06-24-2006 11:38 PM

I have 172K on the clock and have replaced a lot of the parts. I autocross as often as I can manage and will stop when it's balled up. If anything breaks I'll just fix it or replace it with higher performance parts. :)

My thoughts exactly.
rallyshark 06-25-2006 11:12 AM

My RS will be retired from daily driving/autocross and be moved into club rally once i get a second car :) ODO is at 80k+ right now
spazegun2213 06-25-2006 12:30 PM

I just retired my suby after 12K on the clock. "WHAT?" you say? well as serious as i became abotu racing i decided that buying a dedicated track car made sence, so I bought the porsche.

Still i know people will over 100K and they are still flogging their suby's on a regular basis.

Untill Subaru brings out the Spec-C in the US!!!!!

 I like your way of thinking.

Ill most likely keep racing mine well in to the future. I just need more driver improvement, better gearing, and less lag (twin scroll FTW! ).
EvolvedAK 06-25-2006 04:19 PM

racing? I dont race.. Im a good little subaru driver   :D ...

You should post such stories in the NASIOC "Kill Stories" forum.

203,000k's, noisy lifter caused by me down shifting to early due to massive brake fade.

Apart from that its going to keep on getting raced until i can afford something newer or it blows up :)
eclip5e 06-26-2006 11:29 PM

i started tracking it at 25,000 miles and i'm at 34,xxx now. Next year the plan is SCCA Club racing in ITE, so once it gets caged it goes off the road, and i race it until the chassis is dead.
turboICE 06-27-2006 12:02 AM

Racing (wheel to wheel, R-compounds, kidney loosening suspension) and tracking are different things - but anyway in either case how long it will last on those activities depends on the same things that determine how long it will last on the street. Proper maintenance and upkeep - the amount needed increases exponentially with the how hard you use it.

A month ago a guy went to Beaver Run for his first (or one of his first HPDEs with 125k miles on it). He was getting knockback (replace wheel bearings) and his wastegate was sticking open (replace TD-04) and he should be set for many more.

eclip5e - what region are you going to race with and what original classing are you using to get it into ITE? I would look at NASA's new race class Performance Touring for racing Subarus instead - the rule set is tuner friendly (do what you want and take your points for classing) and the chance to compete in class is a lot greater than getting run over in ITE run groups (remember the SCCA 125% of fastest lap time rule). I don't see T-3 prep getting to within 125% of ITE fastest laps. Also there will likely be 2-4 Subarus in Performance Touring next year in the general vicinity.

Until Prepared is finalized as a class I don't see much in the way of any SCCA welcome mats for Subarus in affordable club racing. Not that Prepared will be affordable but at least Touring class WRX and STi will have a place to go after they are 5 years old.

BTW a well caged subaru will never have a dead chasis - the only way to get rid of it is to ball it up.

I started tracking my Legacy Turbo at 100,000 miles. It's got close to 150,000 now. I'm putting a cage in and will be racing along with Adam in his 2000 RS in NASA PTD class next season of wheel to wheel racing.

As ed and others said, if you maintain it you can run it for a long long time on track. I just replace rotors every 10-15 track days and HP+ pads every 5-6 track days, oil change 1-2x a season, and that's about it. :)

I was going to use TCg as the original class, its a stock motor 2004 WRX with no power mods, its all suspension work, brakes, and safety.

I'll look into NASA, it seems like an interesting way to go.
greg donovan 06-27-2006 01:30 AM

mileage doesnt really matter.

maintenance matters more.

sure the shell may have 200k on it but if it isnt rusty and the engine and trans only have 25k on i consider that a pretty new car.

hell, i bought my 95 legacy wagon in 98 and it had 150k on it. it now has 250k on it and aside from some rust it runs just as good as when i bought it.

so track away and dont let the mileage scare you.

i also started rally crossing my old 90 legacy when it had 100k on it.

PTD should be fun in NASA-NE next year....

Ed aka TurboICE in his 240sx
Chris Allen in his Prelude
Adam in his 2.5RS
Me in my Legacy

Any other Subies wanna get on board?

160,000km and has seen the track about 8 times a year for the last 3 years! Still going strong.
