autox daily driver part 1

Leadfoot77 02-26-2006 03:38 PM

autox daily driver
How many people autox with their daily driver? How risky is this?

I'm going to start autox and was just wondering...

Thanks!
nKoan 02-26-2006 03:48 PM

I auto-x my daily driver. Auto-x is relatively mild on your car (at least when you start) that it don't think it should be a big problem.

Assuming, of course, that your region doesn't design courses that are too close to fences or light poles or something.
Poweredbysnail 02-26-2006 03:49 PM

I AutoX my daily driver all the time the only thing i do is change wheels and tires.
PhilC 02-26-2006 04:49 PM

Jen daily drives our STX car. We do tow to away events though. Last year the first event we actually had our trailer was the first and only event we've ever -had- to tow home because we couldn't drive. A simple cut radiator hose but I was glad we had the trailer as we were 5 hours from our house at the time.
Rasmusson14 02-26-2006 06:20 PM

I autox the daily driver and found it a great way to learn the limits of your car in a safe and fun enviroment.

Enjoy!!!!
skuttledude 02-26-2006 06:55 PM

I've been doing AutoX nearly every month straight for the last 2 years. It is my 100% daily driver. All fine.

Do AutoX! Its the best and first mod anyone should do.
cooleyjb 02-26-2006 08:00 PM

I daily drove the STX car for a week or two. It wasn't very fun but that was mainly due to the blown struts and 10K/12K springs. And although the shifter kart would be fun to commute in it doesn't have lights and a seatbelt so a few of the local law enforcement probably wouldn't like it.
Butt Dyno 02-26-2006 08:22 PM

You'll be fine. There are some cars that have oil pickup issues that might die at an autocross, but the WRX is not one of them :)

Just remember, when you make a mistake, let the car spin, don't try to "save it". That's just about the only way I've ever heard of bad stuff happening at an autocross.

I've been autocrossing my DD for a few years now. Dedicated tires are the way to go, other than that it just accelerates wear on the normal stuff. Have fun. :)
Leadfoot77 02-26-2006 09:06 PM

Thanks for all the responses...

so you guys swap your wheels out at the track every time? i have fk451s on my summer wheels and snows on teh stockers.
AndrewSS 02-26-2006 09:07 PM

i autox my daily driver :)
jdmgary 02-26-2006 09:19 PM

Same here, AutoX will take a toll on your car, if you do it alot. Yea, you gonna have different set of wheels and some sticky tires.
Zoinks 02-26-2006 09:22 PM

Two years for me, no issues. Maybe a cone scuff or two. You'll eat through tires, but that's about it.
Thanks for all the responses...

A lot of people do, but I'm too lazy. I have a set of Azenis that are my dual summer/autox tires. I go back to the RE92's in the winter. This has worked out fine for me for the past two seasons.

How many seasons do you get out of the azenis? I figure they probably wear a bit quicker than the fk451s which of course will not be quite as good on teh track.
leecea 02-26-2006 09:30 PM

More than 30 autoxs on my daily driver. Yes, I swap wheels at each event.

Touch wood, damage so far is limited to:

1) One wheel stud replaced.
2) Front wheel well liner attachment points to the front bumber cover broken and fixed - too many cone hits!

Autox is like a drug. Minor damage is irrelevant compared to the rush you get from a run 'on the edge'.
Leadfoot77 02-26-2006 09:40 PM

i can't wait!

do you guys think it's going to really suck that I will have to start in a non-stock type class because of my mods?? (mods include cobb stg 1, steering rack bushings, ss lines, and although they aren't on the car yet, endlinks and f/r adj sways)
PJC1909 02-26-2006 09:54 PM

A little devil's advocate here:

The first "fun run" of the season -- one casualty

That's me in front of the black wagon.

Be careful, take it easy the first pass to become familiar with the course. Also, I rode with the guy in the red wagon in front of me, a fully STX prepped car and driver. This was instructive.

This was my first a/x too.

I put my current set on in June of last year, and after a full season (at least two events per month from March to October or so) and one or two full day schools I have a decent amount of tread still left. I think I'll probably get about halfway through this summer before they're dead. On the other hand, I'm getting more wear on the shoulder from lack of camber, so that may wear down before the inner tread.

They seem to last longer than I expected. These are the old style, btw, the 215s and not the newer 615s. Dunno if there's a difference in wear.

It won't suck as long as you don't let it get under your skin. ;)

You will not be as fast starting out as any 'regular' no matter what class you're in. Not being harsh, just making the case that you should go to have fun :) Worry about being a contender after you've gotten the feel for it a bit. Everyone learns at a different rate, you could very well kick butt in just a few events, or it could be a full season or more before you're nipping at the heels of the top 3 in your class. Either way, I will put money on the fact that you'll have a blast doing it. I regularly get my butt handed to me by the 'fast' guys, but I'm trying!.. and I never leave thinking that I had -zero- fun. I will be disappointed in my driving sometimes, but only b/c I know I could've done better. That's part of what makes you go back though.

We're about to have a large 'Statemeet' in Houston and there will be an autox and the vast majority of participants are going to be new, but I'm betting we'll have a huge number of converts to autox afterwards.
subaruwrx420 02-26-2006 11:30 PM

I've been autocrossing my daily driver since October of 2004, bought the car in May of 2004. My dad co-drove the car at just about every event, 1-2 per month, for roughly 8 months. We drove in DS for 7 months before making the move to STX. For the last 4 months, I have had a different set of rims/tires that I change either at the event or the night before. No problems thus far but it probably does increase wear and the likehood that something could go wrong sooner. Loads of fun though and it's like a drug. Wait 'till you spin the car once...it's very rewarding. I'm certain that I'm a better driver for being able to know the limits of my car.

Enjoy. :D

I remember your plastic skid plate was on it's last legs, was it involved?

On topic: I daily drove my STi for a season and a half while autoXing 25-30 events. The first season put me through a set of tires before winter, lol, and I bought it in Feb 04. Still had plenty of pad and rotor after the season was over. I went 2 seasons on the clutch and I am only changing it because I know it won't stand up to next years abuse after I get tuned.

I'll probably daily drive the STX car again this year, hopefully having struts that aren't blown should make it more bearable (cooleyjb is talking about my car). If it sucks a lot I'll probably break down and get another vehicle I suppose.

Although I must say while driving my unmodded car was more comfortable the racecar was much more fun to go through the gears and what not
Crash477 02-27-2006 12:25 AM

I daily drive my STX car. AUtox 1-2 times a month. I change wheels/tires at each event as well. Just keep the car maintained. Make sure you have clean fluids before the season starts. Good engine oil, tranny, and differential oils.

WIth the mods you listed, if you use the stock or STX map on cobb AP, then you will be STX. great place to start!

Electric fan on the radiator managed to cut through the top hose. Don't know if the STi is the same cludged together method but on the WRX the top radiator hose has another hose over it that is supposed to be where the fan might be able to touch. That outer hose slips and there is enough movement in the engine with stock motor mounts for the hose to touch the fan and wear through over time.

It blew out at a Peru event and dumped our coolant all over grid. ~$20 part from the dealer on Monday and a gallon of anti-freeze later and the car was just fine.
thechickencow 02-27-2006 08:59 AM

I've blown that hose too Phil, mine looked like it had rubbed on the alternator pulley though.
Scooby South 02-27-2006 09:49 AM

My car is my daily driver...also...

Not really to much to worry about...
I would suggest another set of wheels with your AutoX tires on them..that way you don't ruin your daily driver tires...(don't ask me how I know, but it involved asking the wife for $$$$ for new rubber only after having the car for 5 monthes...;)..)..

As long as your doing your own maintenance there you should be no issues as long as you inspect the high wear items...(Brake pads, fluid, tires, etc..)...

Good luck and have fun..

Bill
Calamity Jesus 02-27-2006 10:25 AM

My cars have been in better condition since I've been autocrossing.. they get more frequent maintenance and I'm more likely to seek out gremlins and fix them if I have a race the following weekend.

If you're serious, it's too risky to daily drive your autox car.

But I've always had only one car at a time, BMW 3er, MINI, STi,
and I like having autox experience in my commuter car so I'm
unflappable when a panic lane change is needed out on public
roads.

What's sad to me is the serious autoxers who spend all their money
on their competition z06 garage queen, and do 99% of their driving
miles in beater trucks/tow rigs.

I'm definately leaning that way, considering the suspension on my autox car cost more than my daily driver. :D I can't really use all that power and handling during my daily commute. I can't use all that performance potential on any public roads, w/o getting hurt or in trouble, but when the weekend competition rolls around, it becomes important. Makes sense to me. :alien:
WRX8XB 03-03-2006 08:36 AM

i've been autoxing my daily driver for...damn has it been a year?

since Feb of 05.

I ate through a set of RE070s in about 12k miles...:D

get a harness, it was the only mod that made ME a better driver.

oh and if you wear huge shoes, get a set of Puma Speedcats for racing those help too.

I had the same thing happen to me. When I finished my run I guess the steam caught up with me and I knew I had a problem. I took the cut hose to the closest auto parts store and even though they didn't have a Subaru hose, they had one that was the same basic shape. I did a parking lot repair and dove it home.
I've since replaced the pitch stop mount hopefully that'll do it until I get around to the engine mounts.

As soon as I can afford it I will no longer be daily driving my STX car though, I'm sure I look rediculous contorting my body to get in and out of the race seat while wearing a shirt and tie.:p
jcroy66 03-03-2006 02:40 PM

Oh, I'm always amused by the thought of how I must look when I'm folding myself in half to get out of the race seat at a gas station, while wearing a skirt. :D
Scoobie Noobie 03-03-2006 03:11 PM

I autox my DD too. I'm looking for the mix that will still allow me to use it for DD and be decent at autox. Discounting my AP, Evolution school in April is the first 'mod' I'm making towards that end. :D
I could use something other than these RE92's too but that's just baby talk.

Bottom line: Autox your DD, a LOT of people do it and have a blast. You will too.
Be nice to the cones!

Where's this picture? There's 60 some pages... and I couldn't find it. I once dodged a corvette coming at me sideways... :furious: Atleast it cracked it's bumper on the fire extinguisher I had been standing next to.

BTW, I autox on FK-451s. The azenis ofcourse are better, but at first you don't necessarily want all the grip in the world. I used to use my RE92s. The less grip will help you work out your bad habits.
shikataganai 03-03-2006 07:55 PM

i autox my daily driver, but, as others, not on the same tires. i carry 4 wheels in the back seat with me, with a pump, racing jack, impact wrench, gloves in the trunk, and it's a quick and easy (if dirty) affair once at the site.
Wiznaz 03-14-2006 01:01 PM

surprising, I expected to hear at least 1 drivetrain story
PKer 03-14-2006 01:24 PM

45K miles, about 500 autocross runs (two drivers) . Original clutch, trans, diff, etc.
/knocks on wood
DrBiggly 03-14-2006 01:54 PM

My car arguably has as many autox runs on it as any other WRX in the US. It's daily driven and now has more than 94k miles on it. Just keeping up with maintenance is the biggest key (i.e. don't drain the transmission fluid and leave it dry.) The oils and fluids, and paying attention to new noises as they come along and taking care of them.
Examples:
-CV joints, they can go if the car gets beat on a lot. Replace axle.
-Ball joints. Eventually this will have to be done on any vehicle, just pay attention.
-Wheel bearings. Unless you have an '05/06 STi, your front ones and then rears will go. It's a Subaru thing.

Those are the big things and really they're not that big in the scheme of things. Go autox and have fun. :)

I can top that :) I DD my one and only car, which also happens to be a PGT rally car ;) So, imagine the race seat, but considerably lower than stock, with door bars to climb over. No skirt involved, though ;)
dowroa 03-14-2006 03:06 PM

AutoXed/DD both my WRX and STi. I have always had two sets of tires (race/DD) and my tires last about 1season/25,595 miles respectively (about the same for both cars).

The following have been the only problems I have had with either car:

WRX 03:
- Plastic brake ducts went
- Multiple cone marks from every event (goo gone + rewax)
- 2 plastic retainer replacements for undercarrage
- FL Wheel bearing

STi 05:
- Front bumper cover and both fender liners + new FSB
- Both brake ducts
- $texas cone marks

Other than those issues, the car has lasted and held up quite well. Keep in mind that I drive a two driver car, and I do more events than are in a general single club format. I dont see why the 'race' tires could not last two seasons (RT215s/RT615s).

Just stay within you limits and the car can EASILY pull double duty and be VERY competitve.

Good luck!

>>>What's sad to me is the serious autoxers who spend all their money

?! But my beater mini van is so much more comfortable then my 12k/10k STX car with it's deep racing seat ... what's sad about everyday comfort! ;) Since I can't possibly recreate AX driving excitment in everyday driving (I'm old but not stupid) I have no desire to drive my AX'er as a daily driver worrying about some ahole rear ending my newer car - again.
Pacobeagle 03-15-2006 08:49 AM

Add me to the list. I drive my SM prepared WRX(bugeye) daily. Luckily for me the drive is only 4 miles.
Although I drive my car across the state, from Homestead to Daytona the car runs great.

xstock 03-15-2006 09:23 PM

My 2002 WRX is bone stock for the definition of autocross stock. I have a scoobysport catback exhaust which makes a nice sound, but no noticeable change in oomph. I run the crappy Potenza RE92's in the summer for beating around town because I haven't been able the where the *&^$ things out yet, Dunlop Wintersport M3's in the wintah, and Yokohama autocross tires (I think they're Advan 032's for some reason; it's been 6 months since my last race...). Anyway, that's a tough setup to beat. I have 3 sets of stock WRX 16" wheels because, well, they're cheap because everybody else goes for bigger wheels. However, w/ the 16's and the race rubber, my stock WRX has fared very well against non-stock WRX's w/ a lot more power, sweeter suspension, bigger wheels, better brakes, and hey wait a minute... My car blows. Anyway the Sti's kick my furry behind but they should. My advice is to get the best tires you can afford to race on and save your big wheels and nice street tires for cruising / non-competition. I would not advocate spending a red cent on anything other than sticky tires your first year out.
ScoobyTodd 03-16-2006 01:50 AM

I AutoX my DD STi and LOVE it! Of course, I went from sunny AZ to snowing Minneapolis! :( That considerably cuts down my fun drug: AutoX.

I haven't had any problems with my car other than the aforementioned fender liners and my modding addiction to "see what this will do." Honestly, your best mods will be Evolution AutoX school, repetition, tires, and sways...in that order.
