AutoX/RallyX Numbers
What are you guys using for numbers?
KC 01-02-2007 03:18 PM

I like the number 66 on my cars... but that's going to have to change this year. :)

Whups should have stated the question better......magnetic, viynl etc? If you made your own how'd you do it
kts262 01-02-2007 03:39 PM

I use a set of magnets I got from rallydecals.com

$25 for a pair of numbers and class

#85 Got a pair of magnets from rallydecals.com as well. They've stayed on pretty much through everything except for my last run at the Ascutney rallyX. The mass amounts of dirt I was throwing up blew one of them off. Whoops.

Figured that. ;) Was having fun at your expense.

All depends on your car really. If it's not going to be driven on the road, and you know your number already... do vinyl.

If you need numbers that can be easily removed, and more importantly, reusable, then magnetic is a great option.

Some people also reusable vinyl numbers, but they only last a few applications. But if that's all you're doing in a year, it may be an option. (But they cost just about the same as a good set of magnetic numbers.)

I just registered on RallyDecals.com definitely going with them, thanks for the info.

Dammit. Now you're going to make me do work.

I bought a magnetic sheet from a sign shop and cut out my own. I had alot left over, which is good since my class has change 3x in as many years.

rallydecals ftw!

It'll be a week or so before I order.....;) ;)
RRR-K2 01-02-2007 05:36 PM

I gotta put a plug in for Bret at RallyGrafix.com.

I've used him for my RallyX magnetic number plates and a number of other things, and I've always been very satisfied. He also does the vinyl decals for many of the top US Rally teams (including VT SportsCar).

That's my $.02 :)

Just make your own.

I got a sheet of magnetic material (any hobby store has it) and got a local hobby shop to print my numbers on a vinyl, and then put the vinyl directly on the magnet.

I think the total cost was about $12 for the magnetic material (at Hobby Lobby) and $12 for the vinyl prints... but I soon realized that the girl at the small hobby shop who printed the vinyl for me sells the magnetic material for 1/4 the cost at hobby lobby... doh!!!

But she did a great job on the vinyl... got the word "Subaru" printed underneath. Still have to make the "STX" part, but I think I will do that this week as now I know for sure I will not be changing classes for a while.

+1 for making your own. my number is 555. i found the font in word and then printed and kept increasing the size of the copies until i got the # the size i wanted. cut them out and traced onto some magnetic sheet.

I used to make my own, but this season I said "forget it" and bought this style setup from RallyDecals:

http://www.rallydecals.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=50

That reminds me...I need to order some STS2 and CSP panels for the MR2 to go with my current "729" and "DS" setup.

Rallydecals.com helped me out with my vinyl and magnets. +1 for KC.

I've gone by 66 for quite awhile now.....
When I started autocross with sccv, they assigned numbers.
If you were in class 7, and you were the second person to register, you became 72.
I seemed to always be the 6th person registering for class 6, then the next year we were allowed to choose our own numbers, so 66 just sort of stuck with me.
I use window paint more often than not, mostly because I forget the vinyl coated magnet plate at home:rolleyes:
RallyCat66 01-13-2007 05:59 PM

Well if we are going to plug vendors...

Jeremy Madore at Redline Rally has been doing some nice looking stuff, was at WBM last year, and is sponsoring several rallycrosses in our region this year.

http://www.redlinerally.com

I'm going to have a tough time deciding between Bret, KC, and Jeremy as to who gets the order for the graphics when I do the Arrow up in circa 1980 vintage SCCA Pro Rally livery. :P

+1 for RallyDecals.com (KC) awesome guy, great work; he's even somewhat decent at pool.

edit- do you mean numbers? or what we use to put our numbers on our cars? if it's number just use your favorite number. or do what i did and make it significant: 937 = 1993 7 (RX-7). get it "ramathorne+rodney= car ramrod, get it?"
siopao2000 01-13-2007 10:02 PM

I bought magnet sheets and cut out "digital" things:

dropmech 01-13-2007 11:18 PM

I use 57.
yarrgh 01-13-2007 11:56 PM

If you pick an easy number, you can use painters tape to make it every time. something like 77 or 11 would be easy. I have 536 for rallyx and used rallydecals.com. To keep the magnets from coming off amidst great dust, I went to a crafts store and bought a roll of magnetic tape, and laid strips on the inside of the door, it takes a lot to get my numbers off now.
AshyLarry 01-14-2007 12:51 PM

Rally Decals, they hold well and are really durable.

Thanks KC.

I make my own. Heres the process I use - http://www.etrscca.org/etrforum/viewtopic.php?t=1564

and here's what it looks like

Scooby921 01-23-2007 04:21 PM

My current set is from KC @ rallydecals.com. I'm not sure how high the speed rating is on the magnets before they fly off, but I've been up to 95MPH without losing them!

If KC happens to see this I'd like for him to PM me to discuss some new panels that I'd like to purchase, but of the custom variety.

Another option is kacework.com. He's another forum member, but I don't recall the login name.
Draken 01-23-2007 06:15 PM

The "96" are actually magnets, sitting on top of white vinyl meatballs. They have stayed firmly planted on "the Brick" at speeds over 100mph.

BTW: can you guess that I quickly created the "TTF" stickers for the side? Exactly. That's why you go to a guy like KC and get some good looking numbers. Otherwise, you won't be gettin' any ladies. Which is, afterall, why we race.

Winner!
WJM 01-23-2007 07:01 PM

I'm all sorts of numbers. 1, 111, 11, 125, 25, 53, 777....the list goes on.

I use everything from electrical tape, duct tape, printed on paper taped on, crappy magnetics....etc.

I think I'll place an order with rallydecals.com. Those look nice.
WJM 01-23-2007 07:18 PM

Order placed...ESP and DSP numbers on the way!
LOLSTi 01-23-2007 08:38 PM

Kc +1.
crystalhelix 01-23-2007 11:13 PM

I make numbers too (not as publicly as RALLYDECALS.COM) but I still buy American Flag stickers from KC....

...now if they'd show up I could put them on, lol.

thanks to this thread I think he will be working hard.

These numbers are cut out of magnetic sheeting (from TAP Plastics) by lightly glueing numbers printed out on a printer on top of it. Its quite easy since all you have to do is cut through the paper with an exacto knife and through the vynal layer below. Once that top layer is scored you can simply peal off the paper template and gently tear through the magnetic layer. I've used these kinds of numbers for autoxing, rallyxing and track days and never had one fall off.
