AWESOME Spec Miata Video from the Summit Point National

I also posted this in my "just got a miata thread" I thought it might get more play with it's own post:
I thought you guys might enjoy this video from the Summit Point SCCA National Race on the 8th and 9th. It's an in-car with Mike "Meathead" Collins who drives the car from 37th to 5th. Here's the interesting story behind it.
Mike's car was totalled by conventional means during saturday qualifying in the rain. Mike wasn't able to run in the second qualifying session, which was dry, so he was stuck with a 37th qualifying spot. I don't have pictures but the hood, bumper, and both front fenders were completely gone, radiator pushed back to the front of the engine, and the frame rails crumpled about 3 inches in the front. We were able to find a frame shop who could straighten it on saturday afternoon - took them until 8pm to get it done. While it was at the shop we spent a few hours pulling all the body work off/radiator, lights, etc., etc. off one of the other cars. We then were working until 3 AM to get the car back together.
Watch the video, especially the first few laps. You will see why they call him "meathead".

rex-n-effect -I think it really depends on the racer in terms of getting mad about contact, noone likes metal-to-metal contact. With that being said, this was a race for national points (ie. people wanting to go to runoffs) so everyone racing should expect pretty fierce competition.
Matt- I'll talk to Mike and see when the best time to come out would be.
There will be a number of good races this summer. You should try to make it out for the 12 hour race in june, it's a lot of fun and they need a lot of people to crew.

That, and spec miata has gotten a little, er, "rough"- so that looks like to be par for the course. I like when he gives the teal car a bump to get him by the other car, just so he can pass em both...

Was that his teammate runnigninfront of him for the middle of the race? Seems like he didn't want to go around...
And they used each other to catch some guys...

They have good reason calling SM "Wreck Miata".
I'm pretty sure that was Chris, another Meathead Racing driver, who Mike was bumpdrafting with on the straight. The video shows how effective the technique is, they both go right by the other car on the straight.

That was awesome..I didn't see any contact too rough..although I've only watched for 5 min..he didn't intentionally spin any out or use the side of their car as a guard rail to make a corner....just lots and lots of incidental contact and bump drafting

i saw no contact and thought it was very clean, other than the crazy start.
he either had some crazy magical, super momentum line coming onto the straights - or had quite a stout motor - or both.
i love spec miata. it's on my to do list.

Glad everyone is enjoying it!
It's pretty impressive how exciting racing a car with ~100whp can be.
As to Luke's comment - it is a combination of a great driver and a really well built car

Nice job of knowing how to race off line and passing!
I love bump drafting. And nice momentum turns.
There was contact on the front straight in the first lap when cars went 4 wide. There might have been contact on lap 2 turn 1 when Meathead passed cleanly under braking. There was noise at the apex.

That's what I thought. Great Passing, Great Braking. Great Work off line. But the straits he outpulled everyone and noone could stay in his draft either.

I believe what he said was:
"My tires fell off."
"There's a tree in my grille."
"Rally spec tires next time."
"This dude in the red/white just let me right on by for no reason."

It looked to me like most of the passing on the straights was due to the following reasons. 1. These are momentum cars and have to be driven that way, and it helps to have a car that sticks. 2. You can hear in the turn entering the last straight why he gets a run on that straight. 3. Nice out braking at the end of the straights.

I agree they are momentum cars. But in the beginning when he is going through turns with 4 or 5 other cars at the same speed and when they hit the straight he is gone. That was the case with the backmarker cars at least. Once he got to the cars up front he was outbraking and turning the other cars for sure.

besides momentum, thats also the difference between his $5k pro built motor and the backmarkers stock 150k mile bottom ends and 75k mile heads. hello sunbelt motors.

used average cars can range from $7,000 to $15,000. some of the heavy hitters with winning cars are asking up to $25,000. ive heard of guys having up to $30,000 put into them.

People have talked about it, but it would ultimately lead to higher costs and be very hard to oversee.
Even with the 5-7k "Georgia Peach" motors (Sunbelt) or other "built" motors in the front runners, you can still come out with a stock 150k mile motor and race. You will not win, and you will probably be running in the back portion of the pack, but you will have someone to race with.
I think the rules have been successful in keeping the costs low for the most part. In the scope of things, being able to build the absolute best car for ~$25k is pretty cheap when compares to other classes.
I plan on the initial build-up of my miata to cost in the neighborhood of $7k (without cost of donor) - this will include a top-notch cage from Piper Motorsports, rebuilt head, clutch, all maintenance items, suspension, a few body panels, paint, 6 wheels/tires. The main thing I am choosing to pass on is the comp LSD - I will run the stock VLSD for a season at least and then go from there.

the best idea ive heard of for sealed motors was the maximum purchase of 2 motors by one racer per season. mazdaspeed could keep track of buyers and the limitation of 2 motors to each competitor would rule out anyone purchasing 10 motors, dynoing them, then keeping the ringer and selling the weaker 9. for those who were still running original motors, production numbers could be checked to match the motor to the chassis.

Wish I wasn't busy with a solo at Heartland Park Topeka this past week. They had some National races going on there on the road course. They had like a 52-53 car Spec Miata race. YIKES! Sounded like a bunch of angry bees flying around the track.
| mcolangelo | 06-15-2006 03:15 AM |
The amazing thing is that his car just pulls away so easily from other supposedly identically prepared Miatas. It speaks volumes about the engine in his car. As a driver he does keep the momentum up well - I got the impression that he wasn't braking too much. Aggressive driving, too!
I recently bought a Spec Miata for track days/HPDE and am not sure I want to compete any further than a regional class. I refuse to spend what these guys are spending on their cars to be competitive at the National level.
As an aside, I'm not sure that pro-built Spec Miata engines are a good thing for the class. It's becoming two classes in one. Those who can afford the pro-built engines and those driving original (not pro-built) engines.
Having said that, I enjoyed the video. I just love the sound of a Miata engine at the higher RPMs!

Hello,
As for sealed engines, the Pro-Spec Miata series running the '06+ Miatas, is using sealed engines. I think once that series gets the kinks worked out of it (eh MPME?), given that it will get television coverage of its races, most of the guys who can afford the $25-30k spec miatas will migrate to pro-spec miata and the regular spec miata will be full of broke weekend racers who don't win by spending lots of money :D

I am definately going to get into this in a 6-7 years... I was talkintg to my wife about it, and she agrees that instead of dumping 10k into a 30k street car, losing the warranty and risking losing it all in a crash (already happened to me once) that spending 10-11k for a finished REAL race car makes much more sense.
I could buy a used one, but I think what I will do is buy a used miata in about 5 years, start slowly building it up, and doing a lot of track days to get a good bit of experience, then in a couple more years, buy a cheap truck/trailer and finish the car.
So whats the process for getting liscenced to run in the SM class?
