Back end rattling, WRX wagon

From somewhere in the very back of my 02 WRX Wagon there is an annoying rattle. The dealer has lubed and goobed the hatch and has now replaced the right rear strut, all to no avail. There is nothing wrong with the handling of the car but on uneven pavement or going around a turn (left or right) you can hear a rattling noise. In searching I've found wiper motor problems or strut problems but this seems to be something different. It's also not something in the spare tire bay
If someone has any idea as to a solution/suggestion, please let me know! I love the car, just not the noise.

Have you checked the jack? I had a rattling noise that drove me nuts, then realized that the jack was rattling around in its compartment.

Last I checked... the jack is in the spare tire bay. :p
Do you have a trailer-hitch? Perhaps your exhasut tip is rubbing against it? How about your wheel well? Anything loose?
Good luck.

do you have a rear strut bar? when i fold my rear seats down my strut bar rattles and pops but goes away when the seats are up.

Thanks for all your ideas. The jack has been tightened, there is no strut bar and the wiper arm looks good and everything in the wheel wells are tight.

just a shot in the dark, but you may want to check if the 17 mm strut top nut is tightened to factory specs (the one that requires a pass-through socket to tighten). i just installed some prodrive springs yesterday, and i wasn't able to tighten the nut down all the way since didn't have the tool. i have some nasty rattling over bumps and on turns (kind of a "clanking" sound). gotta go and find that pass-through socket today since it's driving me nuts.
anyways, i know you said the dealer replaced the strut already, but like i said, it's a shot in the dark that may help....good luck! :)

Check the rear spoiler. I think some of the older wagons had an issue with the spoiler bolts not being tightened enough. My 'old' 2004 wagon rattled like crazy. The spare tire cover was one culprit. Others were: plastic pillar trim, headliner, and the roof rails made some weird noises. One other thing are the fold-down seats - the latches would rattle with the seat backs in the upright position.
| Foxy | 01-10-2005 07:36 PM |
Is it the middle seat belt rattling and bouncing against the plastic trim?
| sirbryanclark | 01-10-2005 08:25 PM |
I have a similar problem. It has been driving me crazy! I just noticed too, when i shut either of the rear doors i can hear the rattle from the back hatch/bumper area... can't figure it out!
| abaxter34 | 01-10-2005 10:48 PM |
my plastic trim cover over the rear wiper motor on the hatch rattles pretty bad if my sub is turned up. possibly another source.

any new fixes anyone? I still can't figure out where the hell my rattle is coming from!

my hatch rattles too and idk how to fix it either :( its so annoying we've poped of the plastic cover and it still wont fix.. i KNOW its the hatch but idk how to fix it

License plate and/or license plate frame. I had a metal frame on one of my previous cars that rattled to no end, and it took me forever to figure out what it was.
Check the screws holding the plate to the car for tightness. If you have a metallic frame, take that sucker off and do a test drive to see if the rattle goes away...

I hear that (well, not physically). I don't even like the sound of a loose plate when I close the hatch, so I put a plastic dealer plate behind it and used all four (4) bolts to secure the LP. No rattle now.
If you can't find the source of the problem, you could always go to the old standby. Volume level 10 or higher on the radio

I hunted for mine for weeks before I figured out that I could reproduce it by shutting the rear passenger door while standing outside the car. That allowed me to zero in on the noise, and try some stuff out (I had a few too many close calls trying to locate it while driving). I disassembled the entire rear gate and tightened every nut in there, with no luck. Finally I decided to turn those black rubber bump stops on the lower left and right corner of the hatch, to make them stick out a bit further. That snugged the hatch up enough that it no longer rattles. I'm still not sure what exactly it was that was rattling, but I tried everything, and that was the one that worked.
Good luck!

That's what I was talking about. If you look to the left and the right of the latch, there are these black rubber bumper things that have a spiral groove in them. If you turn them they screw in or out, basically forcing the hatch out further. Same effect as closing a sponge in there.

I get a rattle out of my wagon, but I want to see if we're talking about the same thing. My rattle sounds like it's coming from the rear passenger corner of the car. It is a short "clankity-clank" kind of noise that I usually hear in hard turns or under hard braking. It sounds as though it's coming from the outside of the car (it had kind of light distant note to it). I first thought it was something in rear wheel well, but I have since started wondering if it might be something loose down the exhaust (after all, with a wagon it wouldn't be very difficult for the acoustics to sounds like they're coming out right rear when they're actually starting left rear or left middle.
Does this sound like what you have?

| SLIGHTLY | 02-17-2005 07:54 PM |
Everytime i had my car at the dealer i asked and they could not reproduce the sound.... What they said it could be and there is NO fix for is the rear seat belt brackets, they need to be able to swivel and they can rattle and for that you are SOL.... considering when passengers are in the back i dont get the sound that could be the case. A simple fix would be to buckel the back seats even when people arnt in them and see if that fixes it....

i see the rubber pieces you're talkin about should i just tighten it or loosen it? ( its freezing outside so i dont wanna try right now :p )

I think if you "loosen" or turn to the left, it makes the bumper stick out more. Give each of them a couple turns, experiment with it. Obviously you don't want it to stick out so far the hatch doesn't seal up correctly, or is difficult to close.

i've determined this is the culprit of my rattles as well. havent questioned the dealer about it yet...hope they'll work a little harder than yours did to fix it!

Had some friends in the back and it was the Right rear c piller! going to take it in again and tell them Exactly where it is and see if they do something about it.

I also had the rear hatch rattle. Tried the license plate, and the third brake light areas, what fixed it was adjusting the striker plate for the latch. While adjusting the rubber bumpers does work, it places the hatch in the wrong alignment. Moving the latch striker plate inwards makes the hatch hold tighter and leaves it aligned right. To access it you need to remove the plastic rear trim over the striker, easy to do once you remove the two plastic screw down holders under the parts tray. And then 2 12mm head bolts allow you to move the striker tighter.

maybe a fix?

I had an 01 celica and when I went around a corner I heard a horendous vibration... it sounded like hell was after me. so I was pissed because my AGX shock was blown.... then I realized it was the exhaust tapping the metal hanger that is not used with the exhaust I had.... so check your exhaust... from the cat-back see if its somewhat close to anything else. the momentum of the turn would push the pipe to rubbing into it. just a shot?

On a related note, the retracted rear cargo cover tends to rattle sometimes. I thought I had a loose hatch until I left the damn thing out once. Worth a check.

Ok, fixed a major rattle in the back of my wagon today. The trim piece on the body that covers the hatch striker. Found that was making noise and also where the storage cover rests on the metal tabs. I removed the trim piece, used some foam tape on the metal tabs, also put the tape around the metal pegs for the trim piece. One other rattle was the "carpeted" panel next to the above trim piece. A corner was tapping on the metal body, again more foam tape took care of that. It's finally gone!!! Hope this helps

GROUP DYNAMICS WORK!
I never thought the noise was coming from the hatch but I was able to take everyones input, which I greatly appreciated and here is what solved my rattle.
When I lifted up the floor cover and removed the tray I noticed that one of the little plastic bolts was off and located it in the spare tire well. When I reattached it I noticed there was still some play between the plastic cover and the metal of the car. I took a felt strip, its about half an inch wide and 3 inches in length and has adhesive on one side. (You would normally use them on the bottom of furniture to stop it marking wood floors.) I place it horizontally on the metal above the screw/bolt and reattached the plastic bolt. I did the same on the other side. I then cut one of the strips in half and placed it on the left side, beneath the plastic piece that rests on metal, that the cover rests on and on the right side, that is just a metal lip, I placed a strip there.
Now because someone had mentioned the license plate may be a source of the rattle I attached one of the strips horizontally on the center of the plate about three inches up. While not made for outside use, the tension of the screws at the top of the plate, which I tightened as well, appear to hold it in place.
And now the good news. So far NO MORE RATTLE!!
The story doesnt end here though. In a week I hope to tell you about an anecdote to the above.
Thanks again to all who contributed their helpful hints.

That's the rear cargo cover we were talking about in the two posts above yours. Make sure you've got it in right side up as well, the indentations in the side of the cabin are shaped to fit the cover one way, if it's upside down, it won't be in as securely. It apparently rattles sometimes because the rear of the cabin is flexing, that's why the strut bar cured my rattle.
