benefits of carbon fibre hood
what are the benefits of a carbon fibre hood? I know it looks cool, and it's light weight but other than that what does it do? Can you paint it?
| cnk | 06-26-2002 01:47 AM |
It's lightweight. . that's why most people get it. Plus for looks. You can paint it if you'd like, but most people just leave it alone as the carbon fiber look is pretty cool.

when ur race prepping your car and you hafta get rid of as much weight as possible, carbon fiber hood is an excellent alternative to stock....or you could just run the car w/o a hood, but i doubt that goes recommended :D
| Drake | 06-26-2002 01:52 AM |
okay, thanks guys. I guess i'll wait a bit before i buy, more important things to buy first
| RaceCarRiot | 06-26-2002 12:42 PM |
just a thought, but the aluminum hood on the WRX is already EXTREMELY light. unlike us GC8 guys, who have to get one, since the stock hood weighs 60 lbs.
i would save my money for other things. ;)
that, and carbon fiber will shear and go right through the windshield in an accident.

Yes, the stock WRX hood is very light so you would notice hardly any difference from stock other than looks, of course. This is a purely aesthetic mod more than anything else. You can paint it if you don't like the way CF looks, but if you have a WRX and paint the CF hood, there is no point IMO.

Carbon fiber hood used for racing = dry carbon= super light and strong (the real thing)
Carbon fiber hood sold for $300~500 = wet carbon= not very light( FRP with carbon fiber layer on top part)
If you want extremely light hood for racing, there is FRP hood made&sold in Japan. They weigh like 8~9 pounds each.

the concept is this:
since most of the weight of the car is under the hood due to the engine, a carbonfiber hood will reduce this weight. Thus, balancing the car, and moving the center of gravity more to the center. :)

Our hoods are 100% carbon and only weigh 8 lbs. All hoods come with a STi sized intercooler scoop. A WRC front mount intercooler vent is a free option.

I talked to a fireman a couple of weeks about carbon fiber hoods. He said he had been to a couple of accident scenes that involved cars with CF hoods and that the CF hoods didn't crumple like the factory hood and went through the windshield. I don't know what make or brand the hoods were but it's something think about.
| SubaFastR | 06-26-2002 05:36 PM |
I could see a fiberglass hood with a layer of carbon sheering off the bolts, but my hoods have aluminum blocks that would hold much better, causing the hood to shatter, before beheading.
| phatfil | 06-26-2002 08:36 PM |
vent?
Do all the hoods have that vent or can you get w/o? I think the vent would look better if there was a spliter in it.
| SubaFastR | 06-26-2002 08:39 PM |
Yes you can get it without the vent.

umm... can u explain the diff between "wet" and "dry" carbon fiber???

Price is the same. They are not made per order, but the list is long right now. No trunklids yet.
If we were to do trunklids, how many of you would be interested?

Wouldn't it be pretty bad to get water in that front area there?

Hrm do you guys really like that 2 toned look on a car? IMHO it looks kinda ghetto....oh well just wondering, no offense intended.
| puppy | 06-27-2002 03:46 PM |
It looks ghetto to me too. I've heard of a company that makes CF hoods with colored resin to match the paint. Does anyone know anything about that?

not really, rice owners just paint their hoods black, carbon fiber definitely looks different

IMHO, carbon fiber hoods have one advantage.....they are light!
plain carbon fiber contrasting with the color of paint on your car is dumb looking (like in the pic above). I would buy a carbon fiber hood and get it painted to match. then it would look stock but you would save like 40 lbs. or so. that would be cool. besides, the hood pins would probably alone give it away that you have a carbon fiber hood.
also, couldn't you just paint one side and when you pop the hood, it would be plain carbon fiber. that would be cool IMO.
but, to each their own;)

does it use the stock latch ?

All pkZero hoods use stock mounting points and latches.

There is a company called monster sports that makes the carbon trunk for the wrx. This may or may not be them
www.monster-sport.com . Check them out they have some cool stuff on thier site. Also there is a company that sells the trunk from monster sports.

Jut curious, how well do these hoods stand up to road debris hitting them at freeway speed? Have they done anything special to protect them from rock dings, etc?
I know with carbon fiber cycling equipment, all it take is one crack and the item is toast. That'd be an awful thing to have happen to such an expensive component!

those look like nice hoods SubaFastR, i would do like what scubaracer said and paint just one side, i would buy one in the future if i knew for sure that they would not take my head off in an crash, i would plan to race rally with them and i would like to make sure that they can take some abuse.
Thanks for your help guys

I notice that some CF hoods are shiny and some are not. How do you make a CF hood shine? wax? paint?
Thanks!
Thanks!
| SubaFastR | 07-28-2002 12:12 PM |
try this for now: www.pkzero.com/pkzero.htm
| SubaFastR | 07-28-2002 12:14 PM |
Oh, and carbon hoods that don't shine, don't have any clear coat. You should treat the hood as if it is painted. Feel free to wax it, just don't use rubbing compound on it, you don't want to burn through the clearcoat and hit the carbon.

In reference to carbon fiber taking your head off, I suppose it's possible but if anyone has ever seen a racing accident with a carbon fiber car (F1 for example) you might notice that the carbon fiber almost vaporizes on high speed impact, it virtually disappears, it isn't very impact resistant which is why people frequently add kevlar. An F1 accident usually results in a cloud of carbon with yellow strings of kevlar remaining. Also "raw" carbon fiber doesn't have excess resin, it has a dull look and it's lighter but very few people use it for off-the-shelf products because it lacks "cosmetic appeal". A good example is the HKS time attack altezza, every panel of the entire car is raw exposed carbon. In my opinion, it looks better to me because it is better. I don't know about the long term durability and resistance to water absorbsion though.
