Best Autocross Tires for 16" rims on WRX wagon

I recently upgraded to 17" rims on my wrx wagon. I'd like to wrap the stock 16" rims with the latest, sticky AutoX rubber.
Can anybody give me suggestions as to which tires to look at and what sizes I might be able to move up to.
Thanks,
Ed

The Michelin Pilot Primacy in 225/45-17 are a pretty big hit this year.

(yes, I'm joking. I'm going to be blunt after already having one 'what's best' thread today... do a search... and your subject says 16s, yet in here you say 17s)

If not...225 50 Falken 615's or 225 45 RS-2's.

16s even more so. Do a search. Should be easier to find since there's less of a selection.

How did you come to the conclusion to list those tires? There are tires out there that are MUCH more stickier than the street tires you just listed. You just made the assuption that he's going to be in STX. STX doesn't have the 'stickiest' tires. That would be bias-plys or in the very least Hoosiers or Kumhos.
... Hence my issue with 'whats best' posts.. they 99% of the time don't list all the info needed to draw a conclusion. For all we know, he could throw some 16" bias plys on there. There's no info for what class he's going to compete in, or 9 times out of 10, a budget comes into play as to how much he has to spend, only this doesn't come until about 5-10 people have posted suggestions.
See what I'm getting at?
"Best" threads usually leave the poster with more questions than answers because people randomly throw out answers without knowing the whole question/details.
Then the OP takes the suggestions, buys the tires because of 'what he read on the net, it's gotta be true', they suck, and they come back here saying "I tried those, they suck!" When in fact he just didn't put up all the details.

Kumho V710 in 225/50R16.

Thanks for the info.
I haven't autocrossed for years (20) so I don't know what class I'd be in. It used to be C-street prepared when I was running my "hopped" up rabbit.
Then I was running the Yoko A001Rs. Great tire for AutoX but didn't last too long when I ran them on the street (go figure).
As for more details-> price is not a problem, just sticky and responsive.
Are the Yokos you are referring to the Neovas?
Thanks,
Ed

what car do you have? what mods do you have? how long do you want these to last? how much are you willing to shell out? any width preference? how wide are your rims?
these are the kinds of things you include if you want to get a solid answer, or a good debate. Or another nasioc flame war.

Flame war? On this site... I don't know what you are talking about. ;)
Thanks for the points to touch on.
WRX wagon 2002
Eibach Pro kit springs
Koni Yellows
Cobb Sways
Cusco rear strut bar
Rims -16 x 7 (stockers)
Width -biggest I can get without perfomance loss (225/50 -16s ?)
Longevity - one season is fine (more would be great too)
Price - don't care

RodeoBoy - Stockers on a '02 are 16x6.5". Quite a few autocrossers routinely fit 225/50R16's on those rims though, so no worries. If they can win competitions with those specs, so can you. Refer to my post above. ;)

In that case... you have a choice of classes.
You can run ESP in which you'd want 215/40-16 Kumho V710s (for great gearing & grip) or 225/50-16 Hoosier A6s.
Or, you can run STX on street tires on the Falken 615s (225/50 or 215/45 for gearing), Kumho MX, Hankook Ventus R-S2 (225/45 or 215/45 for gearing).
Shorter tires = more gearing and some decent pull off of corners, faster.

So KC, which would you consider a better size combination to run 225-45-17's or the 16 inch sizes that you suggested above? I compete in STX and prefer the Falkens over the Hankooks. I'm prone to overdrive in the corners and am very tough on tires.I know this is a little off topic but I had to ask.
| KC | 07-25-2006 03:11 PM |
235/40-17s would be ideal in the 17s for either the 615s or Kooks, IMHO. Some gearing advantage (shorter overall diameter) and some additional width. They are a little bit heavier than the 16s, so you lose out a little in unsprun weight, but that's not that big a deal.

When I started autocrossing a couple of years ago I took KC's suggestion of using 215/45-16 Falken Azenis for my very mild STX class car. The gearing advantage was incredible, I used those tires all the way to the cord...good times.

Supposedly (I'm a little gun shy oon some of the info I get :))- the Neova will be offered in 225/50/16 sometime in the future (they make the tire in Japan- 225/45/16 as well).
The Bridgestone RE01R might be another tire to look at in ST class- offered in a 225/50/16

I have a stock 2005 WRX wagon in D Stock - running Hoosiers in 205/50/16 - the lack of negative camber in the front and the "square shoulders" of the R3SO4's that I picked up used are really hard on tire life - terrific grip, tho'
A tire that is pretty sticky, but will last a good while is the Kumho V700. Another durable alternative is the Toyo RA-1.
I think a 225 might be about the limit you can run width wise - unless you have coilovers (sorry, didn't read your mod list)

V710s will last longer than the A04s and A05s. (A04s were notroiously bad at cording outside edge after 10-20 hard runs on a mini and WRX, the A05s got about 30 runs) The A06s have caught up quite a bit, but its still not known exactly how many runs you'll get out of them before they corn on a camber challenged car. Some are saynig close to 40-50 now in their front heavy minis.
On my RX8, the 80+ run V710s show no signs of cording. Not to say that it would be the same with the camber challenged WRX, but I haven't heard people complain yet.
V710/A06 > A05 > A03 > A04/Victoracer > RA1

Honestly, due to the suspension, you'll be limited with space in the rear. I'd be suprised if you could get a 225 street tire in there.
But if you get the appropriate rates. Go for the gusto 265/45/16 V710's.

Post history....obviously not a DS'er...
And in general, if you're new to autox, so much so that you don't even know where to start for tires...you think its a good idea for him to drop $700+ on a set of R's his first season???
From his first post, he certainly didn't seem like an ESP'er just yet. Maybe he is though...

With money no big deal... no. (That's what he stated before I made my real suggestions)
The 16" V710s that he would be using are even cheaper than the smallest 175/55-16 Advans (which I would not suggest using that size).
215/40-16 V710s x 4 = $616
175/55-16 Advans x 4 = $700
You will notice I didn't suggest what he should use until he updated his post with some info that COULD be used. I didn't jump in stating that he *should* do X based on no info other than he's going to be autoxing.
He's auto-xed before. Albit a long time ago. Concepts haven't changed in 20 years. It's like riding a bike. He'll get the hang of it quicker than a novice.

Yep. Sedan can fit up to 245s on the stock suspension in the rear (the problem area for the wagon). All the other 16" suggestions are above. Best bang for the buck on a budget would be the Azenis.
