Are you going to use R-Compound tires?

Good Luck!

The "regular" togue track is a closed course too...

If you are not a Best Motoring junkie, this probably makes no sense :)

Every time I hear "American Togue," my mind for some reason thinks "Beverley Hills Ninja" or "Jamacan Bobslead Team."

Best of luck, though. It's a good event no matter where it is.

Cant wait to see the coverage on this. Should be awesome, I LOVE Best Motoring.

It looks like a mountain road. But it's not :)

You can't see it in all of them, but in a few of them you can see the car pull into it. It's part of some motorsports complex.

edit: for clarity, I mean the Gunsai Touge they use in most of the Touge Showdown stuff

There's still big trees a couple feet off the road. An "off" there might be your last. That's why those videos are crAzy!

The Gunsai "track" where they do the Touge stuff for the DVD's is actually a series of bicycle trails. Uma Cycle Sport Center, I believe it's called.
AlpineFD 12-20-2005 06:25 PM

you are using the meagan coilovers? How you like them? My friend has been asking me about them, their price is really cheap.

Well how did it go Travis, Who made it to the next step, photos?
makofoto 12-21-2005 12:46 PM

Horse Thief would make a good Touge track ... tight, hilly.

well i just checked out the entrants, and theres definitely some stiff competition. congrats especially to world one, since theyre a local shop. the muellerized evo looks insane, and since its "muellerized" im sure its not just looks. this will for sure be a dvd to buy.

So who won each category? Wasn't this thing held yesterday?

Matt
joey1313 12-21-2005 04:21 PM

From what i've read on some other sites, it was less competition and more producers choice awards. Seems rules were not clear and politics ensued. Cars that broke were given second chances and then performed wonderfully. Cars that were disqualified for running illegal tires were reinstated because the producers preferred a particular showdown. Cars had to change their sponsor grapics cause they looked "too JDM". It should be a nice video, but i'd rather see the cars who won within the rules. Hopefully what i've read on other sites isn't true about what went on there.

Congrats to the GravelCrew car for making it as far as you did. I have only heard about the "winners" of the classes. How did your car fare? It got some props on an Evo site being well sorted and looking very smooth on track.
joey1313 12-21-2005 06:33 PM

I pulled this off of another forum. I edited out names and companies(I am not bashing anyone or any car). Just wondering if they went on lap times and not subjective scoring, how well would the subies have done?

As a fellow "competitor" - RWD turbo class - I can add the following observations (for once - in agreement with ****):

(1) The NA RWD Class: No car from this class made it into the finals. The M3, a beautiful and nicely prepped car and the only German vehicle in the event, was told his car was "not entertaining enough" for the video. Could you imagine being one of the "competitors" in this field of approx. 10 NA RWD cars and being sent home with none of the cars selected so that the ***** Racing Turbo RX-8 could run?

(2) In the turbo RWD class, the 550rwhp ****** * NSX ran a 1:07 lap. In the same class, my 93 MR2 ran a 1:05 lap. I asked the producers why my car was not advanced into the final round as the winner of my class based on the lap times I observed on the time sheets. I was told that the decision was not based on lap times, but on subjective scores from the driver (if this is case, why bother timing laps?). Naturally, I then asked to see my subjective score as this had not been communicated to me before they announced the class winners to the crowd. When they flipped to that page, the space next to my car was blank and I was told that they had "forgotten" to score my car. So I next asked that if in fact my MR2 set the fastest lap, and received no subjective score, why did my car not advance to the finals? I was told that the answer might be in the driver's notes or in his comments - so naturally we asked to speak to the driver with the help of a translator and his comments on my car were all very positive. This leaves me wondering, on what criteria were the NSX - and a second car from the same class, the ***** RX-8 - advanced into the "finals"?

(3) In the AWD class, as **** pointed out, the unanimous vote was that the Evo advance. I believe this caught the organizers by surprise as they were likely expecting the crowd to be goggle eyed over the prospect of running the Skyline - we weren't.

The fact is, they knew up front that they wanted the silver NSX up against the Silver Skyline with a flashy blue RX-8 and white Civic in there to round out the field.

Does it come as any surprise that before the cars ever hit the track, the Skyline had the camera mounted on it and the ****** Evo didn't? Unless that Skyline had broken down mid track and unless the NSX was the recent recipient of a Geo Metro swap, those cars were going to run head-to-head in the finals no matter what and no German car, old platform, quirky car, or anything that doesn't sell a boatload of these videos was going to make it into the final rounds no matter what.

If this sounds like sour grapes, maybe it is, but I for one (and I imagine, other competitors) would like to know the true nature of an event before spending sizeable chunks of time and money in preparation. Had I known, I might have procured a Mclaren F1 for the day to have assured myself and my sponors a favorable result - oh wait, that's not a JDM Skyline, so that would have been eliminated too....
STi-MAN 12-21-2005 06:42 PM

im not too suprised, this is a show and like almost any show producers and so forth go for cars that will grab peoples attention and gets people to buy the dvds. I think its wrong but im not surprised.
pio!pio! 12-21-2005 06:43 PM

that sounds normal..I mean it's a tv/DVD show
not a serious competition

they are aiming for entertainment value not anything else.
pio!pio! 12-21-2005 06:45 PM

if you've ever watched the best motoring touge sections they do it all they time
they will choose slower cars because they like them better, or enjoyed it more..etc etc

so basically..it has to be fast (maybe not the fastest) and the most noticable and entertaining...
joey1313 12-21-2005 06:47 PM

I agree about the entertainment aspect. It just would be nice if the fastest cars got a shot at the video. Why bother having a contest? They could just invite the cars they want for the video. I feel bad for the GravelCrew car. It seems they didn't have a chance from the start. I think their car is awesome.
makofoto 12-21-2005 07:23 PM

Anyway of getting all of the lap times ?

Remember the japanese have a hard time saying "no," and uncomplementary things to ones face. ;)

Yeah... he's talking about our EVO made the finals and was titled as the AWD champion. But an hour later, despite a unanimous poll suggesting otherwise, the producers decided to make the Skyline legal again (despite running illegal slicks). So we were bounced out of the finals and the Skyline easily took the overall win. Oh well... that's how the cookie crumbles!

That's really bad. I've lost faith in Best Motoring giving a nice objective review. All the Japanese touge vids I've watched, while the fastest ones might not have been the most liked by the drivers, they always got to race in the showdowns. I liked how the first American Touge vid played out: NSX was the most liked for ease of driving, but it was only the fastest cars that vied for title.
makofoto 12-21-2005 08:50 PM

Shiv ... I hope the STX map you gave me last week keeps Vishnu in the (Auto Cross) Win Column, even if it didn't work out yesterday for you!

Apparently "you" were out of stickers ... none in the box even though one of your people marked "stickers" on my note. Most everyone in Southern CA is running Cobb ... I'm hoping with your help Vishnu/Ecutek will stand out. :D

oops ... seems like I hijacked ... sorry. :D

I pretty much knew coming into the event that I didnt have a chance of wining. I just wanted to go out there and get and get some feedback from a profesional on how my car handled. If the coures had been a super tight canyon or something with a lot less straights I would have done great.

When Yasuyuki Kazama got back from driving my car he had a huge grin on his face. He said he loved the suspension set up but wanted to know why I took the turbo out. I guess he thought it was going to be a STI or some cool car that I couldnt afford. But anyway he was charging in the car and had a great time. Now its time for me to focus on power!!! It will be getting a built STI swap from www.garagetuning.com in about 6 months. There shop has done 30+ swaps already and have it down. So hopefully by this time next year I will have teh American Touge Monster!!!
