Best Shift knob part 1

Best Shift knob
I was wondering what people thought is the best shift knob out there to place on a short shift?
imprezive one 04-02-2003 10:33 PM

I'll be the first to say it I guess. Momo race air leather. It matches the interior perfectly and it's a nice size/feel. Plus it's momo! quality! here's a pic.

Whoa... that is a SWEET chrome ring around your shifter. What kind is it?

Back on topic, I agree that the Momo Air Leather is the way to go... I have that with a STi shift trim ring and it looks TIGHT!

Thanks! I just put it on there tonight. Here's a link to the thread about it:

This one's easy - Prodrive ;)

But watch out in the summer, it sure does get warm!

I like my black Prodrive knob as well :) It feels great after you great after you get the temperature of the knob to your hand's... It's pretty easy to get it there on cold and hot days, I've found.

I can't stand billet knobs. In NH, at 6:30am when I leave for work, the last thing I want is to hold a snowball for five minutes until it heats up. I've bought a generic billet knob and a kartboy, and returned/resold them both. I have the stock one back on now, gonna get a momo air-race eventually...

Hey is that carbon fiber interior I'm seeing - how do you like so far? Any detailed pics of the center concole and door trims?

Yes, it is c/f interior. And, no, sorry, I don't have any detailed pics :(

On the plus side, I did just get an OEM-looking deadpedal so I don't have a black piece of plastic to rest my foot on :p (That had nothing to do with anything, by the way... it's early in the morning)
Chumpsteak 04-03-2003 11:42 AM

Momo
My 2 cents.

I lopped about 3/4" off the shifter to get that "low profile" look and feel.

The new STi knob would probably fit. I'm not usually about trying to make my WRX look like an STi but the solid black leather with that red stitching looks real nice. Sorry I don't have a picture for ya but it souldn't be too hard to find. its the new MY04 knob.

Red stitch

 California doesn't really have that problem :)
NavySealSTI 04-03-2003 09:35 PM

MOMO goodness.
T33 04-03-2003 10:33 PM

MOMO Raceair leather.
Dr. Zevil 04-03-2003 11:16 PM

Got MOMO, like Prodrive. Like the MOMO too, just got some "grass is greener on the other side" issues.
Judah 04-04-2003 08:09 AM

I have to agree with the kartboy. I had the prodrive one, but it was so huge, it eliminated the short throw shifter.
joostin420 04-04-2003 09:14 AM

Slalom RS

i know what you mean by holding a snowball. my shift knob was made for me by my buddy. it is a shorty made out of Stainless steel, looks absolutely beautiful but very cold for a long time in the winter months.

I like my black shift knob my friend turned out of a block of Delrin. It looks nice & subtle, is black, doesn't get too hot or too cold.

I'll try & get a pic sometime this weekend & post it. It is similar in design to the STi knob, but I like it better (which is why I sold my STi knob in favor of his).

Looks good man!!! Where did you get it and how did the stock boot fit onto the knob? Did it have a little lip like the stock knob for the boot to clip onto?
WR xplosive 04-04-2003 11:37 AM

Hank3, I got it from autodynamic.com for $41.00 local pick-up. They dont advertise this as having to fit on Subarus only on Acura/Honda, but I tried it and it did. no clip or anything like that to hold my boot. I guess the boot pushes up against the knob. Best feature I love about this is its weight. I had the CF/GunMetal version of this from my Integra but I like this better on my WRX.

Thanks for the info - is this knob significantly heavier than the stock knob? I want something heavier; to make the shifts a bit smoother...

Stock shift-knob is just a paperweight compared to this 400grams heavyweight. Like I said, this is why I bought it...HEAVY! I think the knob that's heavier than this is Skunk2, at 440grams.
this knob is also heavier than your everyday shiftknob, at 400 grams, allowing for more precise accurate shifts.
Make mine Momo Air Leather. It fits my hand so well, and has a delightful heft, never mind that it matches the steering wheel perfectly.

I have the STi Titanium and all I can say is WOW what a difference a Shift knob makes!

It's all about the Momo race air (leather)

Installed it on the wrx but it's hard to shift so I changed to the Type 400 Leather.
ryball 04-04-2003 06:24 PM

Cusco Delrin (I think) looks like a little cue ball. I have the Kartboy and the STi piston also. I just switched back to the STi just for a change of pace...
Chocobo 04-04-2003 07:30 PM

Its all about the stock knob! But the JDM GC8 ones with the red stiching. I just feel most comfortable with it.

STi titanium "piston" style.

feels good to me, very light thought. I dont shift with my hand directly on top of it, however. since it is so narrow, i warp my hand aroudn the right side to shift. good enough for me, its ym first stick car and only have experience with the beaters i learned to drive a stick on, so im enjoying the feel of the STi shift knob and short shifter :)
DrD 04-05-2003 10:09 PM

I currently have the STi titanium one (the piston shaped one) - I like it a lot - I also liked the stock leather one, but the smaller STi feels better to me (I don't rest my hand on the shift knob, and the narrower STi feels better to me - I think I would like the STi carbon fiber one, but don't want to spend the $ to find out (I got the STi on eBay for $40) - the Momo race air leather looks nice, but it looks gigantic! (at least in pictures it does)

I will probably ditch the STi for the summer, though... (I don't think I need "STi" burnt into my hand!)
lobelsteve 04-06-2003 04:06 PM

Kartboy anodized. Lowers shifter height by an inch, smooth in the hand.

definetly a kartboy, and while you're at it, the short shifter from kartboy as well. best combination
ryanh 04-07-2003 12:39 AM

I just got in my momo sphere. It is pretty bad ass!
2003WRX 04-07-2003 01:42 AM

I have a Momo King knob which matches the pedals and silver trim in the car perfectly. :)
