looks good, but did you spray inside the spokes or is it the camera reflecting light. black looks much better than boring silver.
| my03rx | 09-29-2006 12:42 AM |
ya it does look alot better but those tires need to be tire shined or somethin. and^ did you get between the spokes what did u use for the paint and primer?
| IIdiceII | 09-29-2006 12:49 AM |
wha tpaint did u use?
i wanna paint my rotas black but i dont want em really glossy and i dont want em really flat.
kinda like satin black. my tarmac 1's had the perfect black color. semi glossy flat kinda
any recommendations anyone?

You washed, primed, and coloured it?
Did you have to sand it down before priming it?

black looks good, it makes your tires look terrible though, you either need to wash the tires or get some new ones, and when you get new ones you will get new weights, and then youll have to repaint where the wieght originally was...weve all had to deal with it I think. I hope you did get inside the spokes, thats a pretty big part to this. and Im curious to see if taping off the "subaru" will come out good, just a straight silver line with subaru in the middle...
Edit, it looks like you already took the tape off, and there is a silver line that says subaru, Id suggest if you didnt paint the spokes, that when you go back and do it, to paint that line too, IMHO it looks terrible...just my .02 though....

yeah sorry, thats an extremely crappy job, and i cannot believe you painted them in your house.
for the other poster above, matte black is the perfect balance between shiny and flat.

I used duplicolor black primer with satin black base paint with a clear coat.

Baked Cookies: I was just wondering why you thought my job turned out so ****ty? I did not realize that I did that bad.
| JBravo920 | 09-29-2006 11:48 AM |
Id just say to get inbetween the spokes better, and paint over the subaru line on the center cap, thats probably one of the ugliest things Ive ever seen anyone do to stock painted wheels, either leave the whole centercap silver, or paint the whole thing black, but not just a single line man...
| jasman17 | 09-29-2006 11:51 AM |
can you explain a little better what you mean between the spokes? Thanks
| JBravo920 | 09-29-2006 12:43 PM |
the sides of the wheel, they look like rounded triangles. Id say its just the light hitting them thats making it look not painted, but you would have to have light coming at them from every angle...
| Ryan314 | 09-29-2006 01:38 PM |
I painted my wheels with duplicolor gloss black as well and did not use any primer.
And as it looks in the pics, you did not paint the inside of the spokes!

Im the man with MSPaint! There is 2 more per wheel too, but that would have just made it look cluttered.

agreed, paint that area, the whole center cap, give the insides of the wheels a quick spray, and then wash the hell out of your tires and dress them.

Not to crud up your thread, but like I said, I also used Duplicolor black + Duplicolor clear to paint my wheels, so it should come out looking like this...
Day after wheels have been painted-

Almost one year later (yes dirty inside wheel, and new tires)-

Maybe hit them with another coat? and a couple of coats of clear.
that should help! :)

Everybody,
Thanks for the comments even though some of you are being dicks. I care about my car just as much as everybody else on here and I don't want it to look crappy. This is my first paint job and first real DIY project. I realize what you are saying about the spokes. I am going to repaint them. Didn't look that way last night. Guess I didn't really know what to expect since I have never done it before. Second, my car is sonic yellow which is a unique color so I was trying to keep the sonic yellow colored SUBARU on the rims. I am going to try it out. If I don't like it, I will paint it all black. I just wanted to try it for myself. I am sorry that some of you/all of you don't like it.

jasman, i wasnt trying to be a dick, sorry. But the way you taped off the subaru writing and not painting in between the spokes totally killed any chances of the rest of the job looking good.
good luck :)

I've read that powder coating comprimises the structural integrity of the rims though. I know I have read that before. Was I misinformed?? But if jamie hasn't had any problems with the way she drives then i can't picture it being that big of a deal. I'm guessing jasman17 didn't want to drop hundreds of $$$ on powder coating though.

You will always run into people being dicks, don't worry. I think you're off to a good start but you should definitely put another coat on and buy a can of the duplicolor clearcoat also. It will make it look better and last longer. And definitely post pics when you put them on the car.

There is something about the STi BBS wheels that makes it not good to powdercoat them with heat, but they can still be dipped...I dont remember what the difference is, but its on NASIOC somewhere.
And I wasnt trying to be a dick either, I always appreciate constructive criticism, so thats what I was trying to do. If you wanna leave the Sonic Yellow "SUBARU" on the wheel, thats cool, Id just try to do just tape off the actual letters though, it would take a lot of time to do it, but anything you wanna do right will take a lot of time. I painted my wheels a long time ago, around the center cap is chipping away now, I didnt do a very good job either, Im just pointing out what I see wrong so that maybe you can take a second look and realize what would actually look better to you and others. Like I said taping off the "SUBARU" letters on the wheel one at a time would be a PITA, but it would be pretty sweet, and something I havent seen anyone do yet!

Oh yeah, it was the sti bbs wheels. I think you're right.
I Personally would paint the subaru logo on the center cap but whatever you want to do.

I would too, and I did on mine, but he says he wants to keep the color. Another way that would probably be a lot easier now that I think about it, is just to get some touch up paint and paint the "SUBARU' letters the same color as the wheels, then after it dries, paint the letters with the touch up paint...I might do that...haha!!!

Anyhow, I'll give you props for trying to do something yourself. Anyone can pay to have something done.

Looks good I'll be painting my stockers black soon as well. Hit em with a couple more coats of black and a couple more clear. Using a hairdryer (or even better a heat gun)to help dry the coats in bettween helps alot too. 3m polishing compound and coat of wax helps too.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responses. I thought about painting the whole cap sonic yellow as well as painting it all black then using touch up paint to paint in the subaru part. If I don't like the way I did it, I will probably try one of those methods. Yeah, I definitely do not have the money to pay for powdercoating. I am in the process currently of touching up the first 2 wheels that looked crappy. Thanks for pointing out what I missed guys.

no need for that, a lot of us have painted our wheels, its a very cheap alternative while we spend our money on other worthwhile mods but still want something different. If I could afford Volks I would get them, but on the budget Im on now, I would be lucky to get American Racing wheels, this is for someone who just wants to change it up a little bit, dont hate...

Bro, don't sweat it. Most of the people here pay others to do work on their car, which is sad. And then they brag about what they have on the car when they didn't even put in the wrench time. Don't worry about those people. No enthusiast respects them.

Just so I can explain what I did to paint the wheels:
I cleaned them excessively with soap, water, degreaser, and scrub.
Dried them.
Sanded/scuffed them with emory cloth
wiped them off with wet rag and finally with Duplicolor prep wipe
used notecards around the wheel to shield from overspray
sprayed a couple of coats of black duplicolor primer (10 mins b/t each spray)
let sit for 30 minutes
sprayed a couple of coats of satin black duplicolor base coat (10 mins b/t each spray)
let sit for 30 minutes
finally sprayed a couple of coats of duplicolor clear coat (10 mins b/t each spray)
let sit for a long time

Hey nice job! I'm not a big fan of painted wheels but these came out good, don't be scared to do another DIY and please continue with a write up, next time more pictures and details! I'm sure a lot of people would find it helpful.
