Black Wagon with Partial Silver Roof Rail <pic>

I'm looking to do it Audi-ish. I know, I know only Audi looks like Audis. But I spent a few minutes to vinyl the roof rail to have a preview. What do you think?
I'll add more pictures tomorrow or probably redo the thing in nicer shade of silver vinyls or probably wrap the whole rail with silver color and see :D
* I love the roof rails, without the rails it looks so skinny. So, derail isn't my choice.

Do you have a bigger picture?

This has potential. I think that derailed roofs still are the best, but if you gotta have one, why not church it up?
| Bishop | 01-03-2006 04:05 AM |
yes bigger pic please.

Billy, that looks pretty good actually.
It almost reminds me of an Audi Allroad, except without the gargantuan price tag.

Actually looks kinda cool, but what happens if you mount bars to it?

Thanks Steve!
sonicsuby Actually looks kinda cool, but what happens if you mount bars to it?
Cause I'm using vinyl stickers, so it shouldn't be a problem. If you paint it, that's another story.
MikalsWRX Yeah I wanted to it to that too. Like a brushed aluminum thing
I was gonna do that in brushed aluminum too. But The "brushed alumnium" vinyls are way harder to make it look perfect. Also, you got these little brushed lines going horizontally. It's too much hassale to make it look nice. So, i picked this silver vinyl that I had handy. I had rolls of vinyls laying aorund. So, it's easier for me to try.
Also, thanks all for the good words.

That made your car look about 2x as expensive... someobdy have time on hand to do it on a PSM wagon to see how it looks? :)

Didn't someone actually strip the paint from the center part of the rails to reveal a REAL aluminum finish underneath? I guess the vinyl works, but if you wanted REAL aluminum, there ya go...

you beat me too it, it was a saabaru, dark blue and he painted the ends (the actual mounts) blue to match the car. i dont remember if i saw it here or on the saabaru forum. and i think he said the rails were from an older model or at least not a WRX.....i think.

that's exactly the car I was thinking about. You posted the preliminary pics over here, didn't you Chris?
| animes2k | 01-05-2006 12:22 AM |
yeah, cuz i'm certain I saw those exact preliminary (dark garage) photos, but I don't venture to 92x land that often. maybe there was a link... *shrug*
nope, it's a thread i responded to...

Oddly enough, it's "you" under your 92x name... (same car, same garage, same "spray booth" kinda thing up front and same SUV parked in the garage) :)

ah, my apologies. I missed the part about "not my car" in your first post :D
Why vinyl. Just use paint stripper. The black comes off easy, below is brushed alum. with a clear powdercoat. My rails came off of a 2002 WRX.
I did this on my 92x. So if any of you want some roof rail deletes let me know.

Chris
hey, I'm wondering if it's "brushed aluminum" or "polished aluminum" underneath the paint. If the factory decided to paint them, why would they "brush" it? Or did you polished them or is it a typo?
If it's really brushed aluminum, I'll consider stripping the black paint. I used vinyl simply because I had them handy and I don't wanna spend too much time taking the rails off to paint or mess with them.
I *think* it is brushed. I didn't polish--only removed paint.
Here are some more close up pics of the bars (again this one is not my car either, lol)

any updates? :) I really wanna see better pictures of the end results.

That is very very very hot dude.... did u just use vinyl? How did you get it to stay with roof racks on?
| rukkie | 02-04-2006 08:25 PM |
If you are talking about the black saabaru...then no. It is not vinyl. I stripped the black factory paint off of a wrx roof rail. It is brushed aluminum underneath covered in clear powder coat--who knows why FHI covers it in black paint.
hmm... I wonder if that's the same on the Subie's...
