More functional bumper vents part 1

More functional bumper vents

After installing the Ganzflow intake, Larry recommends to remove the bumper vents. I didn't quite like the unfinished look of this so i made this mod in hopes of making it look better and more functional

Restrictive vent. I carefully removed the horizontal slats...

<IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/image_uploads/bvent2.jpg" border=0>
...and then wet sanded the remaining shell...

<IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/image_uploads/bvent3.jpg" border=0>
...this is the vent after painting and attaching the infamous gutter guard via small zip strips....

<IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/image_uploads/bvent4.jpg" border=0>
...the final product in the bumper....

<IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/image_uploads/bvent5.jpg" border=0>
...this is the vent along with the grill guard mod.

I don't know if this has been done before, but i kinda like it.

Wow...that looks pretty trick....I lke it...: )...
ChosenWon 03-10-2001 05:59 PM

Snowman, that looks awesome.

I had also planned to do that if I get a oem bumper to replace my cracked one.
I like how it looks so far...

not to shabby [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]

i kinda wrapped the gutter guard around that vent. i think yours looks better though. thumbs up man.
Darwin 03-10-2001 07:46 PM

I priced replacement inserts, incase I messed with and screwed up mine. You wouldn't believe..
right side:57744FA200 $28.25
left side: 57744FA210 $31.28

for little bits of plastic?
Safir 03-10-2001 08:47 PM

The question becomes "Why is the left side so much more than the right?" my guess is people screw with the left side more often and mess it up [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
Snowman 03-10-2001 08:59 PM

Mine are free...........if you use the ones we got with the car...........lololol

Question: where do the zip tie strips strap onto?
HondaH8er 03-11-2001 12:02 AM

Yeah, I cut the slats out of mine, but I just left it open. And I left the driverside alone, except for painting it body color. Anybody looked for these vents at junkyards? That might be a good sorce of cheap vents. Looks good, Snowman!
Snowman 03-11-2001 04:28 PM

Godzillong, i placed on zip tie on the top and bottom. Only the bottom one is showing in this photo.

Has anyone tried painting the mesh? What did u use to cut the slats out?
Fido 03-11-2001 05:40 PM

You can get everything you need at Home Depot...Gutter Guard is back with the roofing stuff, and the zip ties are in the electrical isle and I believe are actually called 'cable ties' or something...Just go in and ask for Gutter Guard and Zip Ties and they should point you in the right direction (they really are pretty knowledgeable there)...
Snowman 03-11-2001 06:46 PM

JC- I used the same cutter that i use for the gutter guard to cut out the major horizontal slats.

Then i just used a utility knife and x-acto to get the bits left on the side(s). The more careful you are means less sanding. I used 400 and then 600 grit wet sanding paper. Makes it nice and smooth.

You can paint the gutter guard any color you want. Cut it and shape it to the back of your shell first.

ttt
MagicMT 03-18-2001 10:25 PM

What a coincidence! I'm currently doing the same thing since I got a CAI. How long did it take you? What kind of paint did you use on it? That looks really good!
MagicMT 03-18-2001 10:46 PM

And howcome your vents are yellow?? I thought they all came in orange
Snowman 03-19-2001 02:48 AM

I painted the vents from ugly orange to yellow, takes about an hour each side, use any paint that is close match to your car color. (i'm not a paint guru, someone else might have more info on the best type of paint to use)

I wonder if there is a better way of attaching the mesh to the vent. Other then zip ties
DigDug 03-19-2001 08:35 AM

Very nice looking vent inserts. I would certainly pay for such craftsmanship (hint hint!).
Snowman 03-19-2001 05:46 PM

M a t t: You could prolly use some type of epoxy to set the gutter guard in from the back of the vent shell.

DigDug: Thanks, but i barley have enough time to mod my own car [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img]

Man thats sweet, I was trying to figure out what to do with those ugly things.

Great idea....
ImprezaRS dot com 03-24-2001 11:10 PM

This is pretty neat - I have the screens for my grill and vents, but haven't had time to install yet - the other day I somehow ran over a loose bumper vent that fell on the garage floor, and I seem to have lost the other - so I guess I need to order a pair from Sugar to modify now...

ivbdn 03-25-2001 03:04 AM

That's a sweet mod. How'd u do it for the bumper?
Miracle Worker 03-25-2001 08:51 PM

I had the same idea [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] what do u think about hot gluing the mesh to the vent frame? Not found of zip ties.

btw. I haven't cut my finger once!!!

Snowman 03-26-2001 07:39 PM

Miracle Worker: Yes, you could prolly just glue it, but if it comes off, there is nothing behind it.

ivbdn: Do what for the bumper?

Snowman 03-26-2001 08:22 PM

IMPREZA GUY: I used plasti-kote car color 7215GM. I think i found it at Pep-boys.

thanx snowman
Snowman 03-27-2001 03:31 PM

IMPREZA GUY: No prob bro

SoCalScooby: Sorry, I think some things get lost through this medium. That or my brain can't process your question.

The grill guard mod is one thing and the bumper vent mod is another.

To answer your question as i understood it, i cut out the slats, painted the frame then attached the gutter guard to it.

Let me know if this answers your question.
