Amazing! An eye - opener for me. Looks like the new trend is having incredibly long pipes that shoots all the way up to heaven.

So what is the lesson here? There is probably a thread on a Japanese car forum right now, making fun of the current overly abused American car enthusiast trends. So, I wouldn't go ahead and say, "Geez, the Japanese are weird."
IMO, anyone who overdoes it (now that's putting it lightly) like this deserves their own subdomain on beaterz.com. Just goes to show you... bad taste does indeed transcend culture. :D

The thing is, these guys put in a lot of money, work and thought into their cars. Regardless of how strange they may look to us, they look great to the owners. I'm not drooling over them, but I'm definitely impressed.
| Maicca | 05-11-2004 03:13 PM |
As far as the exhausts go, perhaps they're throwing out so much exhaust soot, that they just decided to extend the pipes out further. Someone saw that, thought it looked cool, took it to the next level.......and so on....
| maestro | 05-11-2004 05:32 PM |
OMG, that's great. Japanese people are so weird. Holy negative camber... and I love the oil coolers. The pipes are for exhaust SPL contests, and the vans are getting more and more insane. Intergalactic disco cruisers... bizarre. They're definitely having fun over there though.
| Grintch | 05-11-2004 05:53 PM |
OH NO, now you've done it. Now all the young kids are going to start copying this crap. Maybe I should try to corner the market on funky big rig exhaust pipes and giant rubbermaid fender flares before this takes off in the US.
| WRXutopia | 05-11-2004 06:08 PM |
Grintch. . .I'm with you. There's business to be had here!
Not-so-good DIY'ers are in luck over there. "Hmm. . .I'll hang this out here and put this out to here"
Sure, they may be proud of their rides, but they're the looks only a mother or their maker would love.

Many people say the same thing about our cars! I used to live in Japan and it's a whole different world over there any way.

Hmmmm... and I thought all Japanese drivers drove Skylines, Supras, RX-7s, S15s, and STis. They are just as goofy as the kid who works at Blockbuster with a "Type-R" badge on his '95 Talon.

Vannig-soku (van tuners) aren't all that bad, better than the mini-truckers we have over here. I sorta dig the old-school VIP cars too, exposed oil coolers and all, especially that one Hakosuka. I'm a sucker for fender mirrors.
I want to go to Daikoku Futo...

OMG, the starburst exhaust is hilarious
You know, ive thought about routing pipes up, but that was to prevent water from bogging up the exhaust during deep water/snow encounters, not for some dumb fad
The oil cooler thing is kinda neat, I think ill convince someone i know to do it with his air-water intercooler ;)

I love these kind of retro nails, especially when they have some ****-off motor shoved in them. Way cooler than a slammed Civic with vinyl on it....
The van scene is not a new phenomenon in Japan at all, but it's moved toward the extreme since I was there last.

Nothing like a nice 90 degree crush bend in the exhaust to smoothen out exhaust flow and reduce backpressure...

Don't feel the exaust or van thing much, but some of those cars have a nice style about them.

Hey here's a thought. Maybe they just put exhaust extensions on them so that the people standing around them don't have to inhale noxious fumes. And perhaps after a couple years of this they started to use their imaginations. It looks to me like the extensions are removeable. The oil cooler lines are a bit gaudy, but liveable. At least they are not all cookie cutter body kits. You can see that some of them have custom fender flares.
I thought most of those cars were very nice. I'm not much of a van guy but some of the art was decent.

The vans are a small minority. Mosf of the cars thier look like our or better. They can roll in high $$$ cars. Especially since they pay about half of what we pay. Anyway what else are you going to do with your money when you live at home with your WHOLE family? Just to get a lil "action " you have to go to a "love motel" so your parents don't find out.

I sorta like the exposed oil coolers.
I like the older cars there. The '80s ones w/ the oil coolers. badass
