Custom Grill for 03 WRX

I gutted a stock grill, left the badge holder, and put new mesh behind it. My camera does not take the best pictures in low light. I will take a better one when the sun is shining.

They have the regular diamond mesh and the flattened diamond mesh. The one used in the STi is the flattened type.
Unfortunately, mcmaster doesn't sell them in small sizes.

That looks really great. How much of the badge support did you cut away?
| pdippel | 04-28-2004 07:20 PM |
The mesh is the gutter guard from Home depot painted black. It's the ones that are slightly curved and come in packs of 5.

Hello pdippel.
First of all the mod looks great. It looks classy and is definitely a more cost effective solution versus an Sti grille or replica. And with the savings we can spend it on go-fast mods, rather than bling.
I've always thought that the stock grille had a great overall shape, but didn't care for the honeycomb/hexagonal grillework. You've solved that problem and its better than I had imagined it would look.
I was wondering how you chose to affix the mesh to the grille and how much of the badge support and side support you removed. I've got a set of Hella supertones behind my grille and would like to remove as much as possible to maximize airflow. I'm assuming that if I remove too much, the grille frame may be weak and flimsy.
If you'd be so kind as to take a photo (back and front) of the grille removed, they would answer a lot of questions. Heck, write the whole process up and submit it to scoobymods for some credit. Yours is the best documented effort I've seen yet.
Regards
JL

Could you take it off the car and put it in front of a light background for a better idea of what it looks like?

pdippel: thanks for the new pics...and info. im gonna definitely do this over the weekend. one last question. how did you mount the grill? tie straps? glue gun? screws of what?
another thing....has anyone thought about painting the black plastic grill(not the mesh) with paint and clearcoat from paintscratch.com or something like that? they sell paint in spraypaint cans . do u guys think that would look better? just an idea....
have u guys read that one thread of the guy who did his own sideskirts...they looked really good. after reading it ive been thinking about buying som paint and clearcoat to paint the grill, black plastic part by the mirrors....and that black part by the antenna. just an idea.
if anyone does that....please post some pics so we can all see. if i do that...ill take some pics too

The whole grill still mounts with the original 6 mounting tabs. I didn't cut any of them out. That's why you see some extra black plastic on the bottom sides of the grill opening. As for the mesh, I cut it very close to the mounting brackets on the rear so it had a little bit of a friction fit and then I used a thick epoxy.
BTW - Take a look at my scoop and fog light covers. I painted them myself in my garage.

How did you fasten the grille to the frame?

"How did you fasten the grille to the frame?"
thick epoxy dripped down when the mesh meets the frame (on the backside of course)

I did the same thing to my car about a year ago. Only difference with mine it I left the honeycomb part near the outside edges there (solid honeycomb), and cut out the plastic in the center all the way down to the center stalks that hold the subaru badge on.
The problem I ran into though was that I had to bondo the small holes on the top and bottom of the grill that were left by cutting off the base of the honeycombs. Pretty easy mod just time consuming.

i just did the same thing you did, but i cut out most of the plastic on the sides..leaving just a square behind each bottom clip. i got some holes on the top and bottom too. after u bondo'd them did you paint them black?

Ya but the bondo started cracking after about 5 months.
| pdippel | 04-30-2004 12:54 PM |
Yeah, I had the holes also. I used the epoxy for that also, applied from the back side. Then I used spot/glazing putty on the visible side before I painted it semi-gloss black.

 WOW! Looks great pdippel!! You have just inspired me! Instead of wasting $$ I will atempt to make my own. Mine will exclude the badge though.

did you sand down the bottom portion to remove any evidence that it had been cut?
how do you get the badge off btw?
i've got a cwest v1 grill im putting on this weekend.. this looks like it might be a good project for the stock grill.

Yeah, I have the STi grill on the car now, so it is off the car. I will take some detail pics of it on Monday.
I sanded the bottom and filled it with body filler.
To get the badge off, warm it up with a hair dryer, and then stick a thin pick into the hole behind the badge and push.
The grill looks like it is missing something without the badge.
