blacked out headlights

hey, some other people have posted this before, but these look really good so I tried it on my car, the results look even better in person IMO

also there's some other things you may be interested in the root...

let me know what you think

that's an internal network address... your gonna have to set up whatever it is you use that shares the internet to forward port 80 to your computer, internet users don't have access to that address.
ellisnc 08-31-2001 09:57 PM

it's fixed, try again
I put the internal IP instead of the router IP because I'm half asleep :)

MAN it makes a world of a difference with the factory headlights!!! Looks awesome, I hated the factory or US spec headlights. I want to try to do the same for myself, but afraid to screw something up. How lond did it take you and what process did you use? Is it high gloss black spray paint? Or matte?
ellisnc 08-31-2001 10:36 PM

I used black Rust-o-leum barbeque paint, put the lights in the oven (not a joke) on 225 for 5 minutes and pry them apart after taking the screws out. Basically you can choose which area to mask or not to. You could just paint the whole thing and the blinker would still show I think so maybe try that. Another thing I was thinking about was painting the bottom side where the blinker is instead of masking it, but thought it might look too funky. Anyway, total time was about 2 hours from the time I took the lights out to the time they went back in. Pretty easy and looks really good IMO.

now to get those black plastic things off behind the rear doors, that irritates me to no end, I may have to take it to a body shop and get the holes filled in a painted

Clean looking car BTW. Where did you get your UK version wheels from, if I may ask?

Thanks,
TRPsWRX 09-01-2001 04:48 PM

alot of people have used a kind of smoke paint to 'tint" the bottom section on honda tail lights. i was wondering how it would look to smoke the whole lense on the headlights?
ellisnc 09-01-2001 04:52 PM

Dan at Vividwireless is where I got the rims, he's really a good guy to deal with, not always the absolute cheapest on everything, but the service I'd say is far better than many vendors out there and he can get you anything so IMO it's worth it. BTW, the rims also come on the new age STI wagon which is where I prefer to think they came from :)
ellisnc 09-01-2001 06:03 PM

I think tinting the headlight covers is generally a bad thing, however if you were to tint the chrome, that might look really cool!
Silver_Bell_WRX 09-01-2001 10:36 PM

Looks good. I like those rims, they look good against the blue car.

trick headlights

Those black headlights look trick. I want to try them on my WRX but I am scard about screwing up the headlights. I can't even bake food and now am want to attempt to back my headlights:)

Any tips on actually making this work on the first try?

Thanx!
trinidriver 09-02-2001 02:06 AM

cool

Hey ellisnc,
Those headlights do look very cool. Thanks for sharing. Just to clarify, was the oven preheated at 225 before you pu the lamps in for 5 min? Was there any trick to putting the lamps back together once they were painted? Thanks again!
ellisnc 09-02-2001 02:05 PM

just preheat the oven to that temp and stick one light in and a few minutes later pull it out and wedge a screwdriver in the top of the light to loosen it up a little then just put the assembly against your chest and with both hands pull from either side and pull it apart. Basically it should go back together the same way you took it apart. I put the whole thing back in the oven after I put it back together to help the gunk seal back together.

I wouldn't worry too much about messing the housing up, just make sure when you put the assembly in the oven you keep the clear part off the grates in the oven otherwise they might melt a little. Otherwise no ill effects.

Hope this helps, any other questions?
SSJ Char 09-02-2001 10:45 PM

ok, so does the entire casing come off, then you put the casing into the oven?
trinidriver 09-02-2001 10:48 PM

thanks

Thanks ellisnc. I'm giong to wait for some PIAA replacement bulbs and orange directional before trying this. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
ellisnc 09-03-2001 12:51 PM

yep, unplug the turn signals and headlight bulbs then undo the 3-10mm bolts after taking the grill and side panels off and shov-er in the oven then just yank it apart. The chrome part us held in by a screw to the front side...

any more questions?

here's another pic for ya :)

How did you mask off the blinker area without getting fingerprints on the reflector? (Or is it unavoidable?)

Looks good!

Daios 09-04-2001 03:59 AM

Maybe i can help on this

I posted this on another thread before...
I helped my friend do his, I masked it and painted it 4 him while he pops em in the oven to break em apart. Fingerprints? don't touch the reflector.. simple as that.

AIM: Daios

-umm... i guess i can't post the same image
but there is the link where i posted em:

Orbiter 09-04-2001 04:11 AM

looks good! ill be sure to try this later..
ellisnc 09-04-2001 05:58 AM

you can just clean the reflector off with rubbing alcohol after you finish which is what I did before I painted them anyway...
trinidriver 09-05-2001 02:11 AM

almost done

I started the process today. All of the instructions were right on. I did make a mistake that was my own fault and will finish up tomorrow. I did black out the reflector behind the directional but left the orange cover on. Hope this isn't illegal. Thanks for the help guys!
Andrew 09-05-2001 02:38 AM

a suggestion:

color in the area with the blinker light as well. it doesnt project any light to light up the road so who cares. the people in front of you shoudl still be able to see your bulb blinking.
trinidriver 09-05-2001 02:42 AM

yup

That's what I did. I haven't put them back on my car yet but they look pretty cool.
ellisnc 09-05-2001 05:59 AM

the only problem that I saw with that is that the reflector kind of reflects the light to the side as well so people get a better angle on the light, it'll probably be okay though
Dr. Zevil 09-05-2001 02:26 PM

I dont' know about the blinker reflector painted.. but I think your car looks tight. I would like to try it.. but you understand my hesitation about pulling my lights and putting them in the oven.

:)
ellisnc 09-05-2001 06:17 PM

understandable
225 won't melt them, if you do it just keep the clear plastic off the grate is all :)

I almost chickened out too before I did it, there's no way a hairdryer would work, it would take forever, maybe a heat gun but the oven is so easy! Plus 225 isn't that hot anyway

just some encouragement, looks better in person than even in pictures. Just walking up to the car I like the looks of the front sooooo much more now.
jagcars26 09-05-2001 10:35 PM

This aint rocket science

ellisnc is right ,,your not gonna hurt the lamps,i used a temp of 200dg for 15 minutes, pull em out,(do one at a time and wear gloves).Pull em apart or pry very carefully at the edge with somethin plastic.Be carefull where ya get the goo,it will clean up up with mineral spirits,DO NOT use goof off or anything stonger to clean up the chrome pcs your NOT gonna paint. It WILL take off the chrome finish. Then just paint your pcs,let um dry .Pop um back in the oven, heat up the goo again.Pull em out again,,gloves again,,Put em back together.Bang your done.
This mod also looks and works wonders to the rs also. Thanks again to Andrew,,,I think he was the one to try this 1st.Ive gotten alota compliments since i did this.Like Andrew said,,"it makes the rs look mean" lol.

Hey guys, was the oven temperature 200 degree's Celsius? or do you mean 200 degree's Fahrenheit ???

Thanks

Jason
mykrrrr 09-06-2001 08:24 AM

200 deg C would be 392 deg F.

Fahrenheit NOT Celsius!!!

Now all you need to do is spray the turn signal bulbs with silver spray paint. Get a thin even coat on them and they'll look silver but blink orange :)
trboCIVIC&WRX 09-06-2001 11:58 AM

I posted this a while ago, but since the topic has come up again, I thought I would get in on it again.

I painted the whole piece, (I hate chrome) and removed the orange cover.

try this: (the pic doesnt do it much justice tho)
