Blue Clock Mod: Complete

So I had done the blue LED swap of my interior this summer, absolutely love the results. But the thing that drove me nuts was the clock... I tried glass paint, blue cellophane, nothing matched, nothing was bright enough, even after I turned off the clock dimming, so I took matter into my own hands... via dremel.
Step 1: www.mcmaster.com - the best place for supplies! I ordered a 12x12" sheet of transparent blue acrylic, "85635K413 - Fluorescent Cast Acrylic Sheet, .100" Thick, 12" X 12", Blue" - $5.04 - shipping was pretty reasonably also, and very fast. (Note: could have probably used a slightly thinner piece of material, I ordered mine without ever measuring, just guessing)
Step 2: Remove your clock. There is a write up someplace else on nasioc, I don't have the link on this computer, and it's pretty simple.
Step 3: Remove the dark plastic shield from the clock. Be careful not to lose the buttons when you remove the dark plastic piece.
Step 4: This requires some testicular fortitude if you like your clock. I used a dremel and made a rough cut of a rectangle in the plastic. I went back with a grinding tool to remove more material, then finished it up a good amount of filing. You can see in the pictures how the final shape looked.
Step 5: Scribe/Sharpy the outline you cut onto your piece of acrylic. Take your dremel again, and go to town. I left the thinkness of the marker and a little bit more, did some precise shaping with the files again.
I filed it well enough that it was a near perfect press fit. I decided not to bother with gluing acrylic to the plastic. I did some research and was going to try clear PVC cement, but decided it wasn't worth it. Since this acrylic is very light blue, I used the glass paint I had purchased before.

I press fit the piece, the coated the entire inside with glass paint. I used gravity to spread it around and make a perfectly smooth. Put it on a sheet of paper, I know I had some run through. This made a pretty good seal and acted as my glue.
Here's the end result.

It matches perfect!

That looks pretty cool! I've always wanted to get some type of cluster with a blue light and also with the STi sweep effect as well.

Seriously though, you've saved me from potentially breaking mine trying to figure out how to do it.
Awesome.

Thats looks great, good work and thanks for sharing it with us. I wanted to know what method you used to convert your cluster to blue. I cant see any hotspotting. Did you use a circular aray of blue LEDs with green film removed? thanks
| Mechie3 | 05-03-2007 08:43 AM |
Blue led's will cause your red needles to not light up (red doesn't transmit blue wavelengths well).
Try this tutorial I wrote:

thanks for the bump and info. I'm going with WHITE leds!
| wrx_impreza04 | 05-03-2007 01:04 PM |
This looks really great, im considering doing this too. The only thing other than the needles being hard to see is the redline being hard to see aswell. It looks like it hardly a different shade of blue. Any one know a way to make the contrast more apparent, can you add a different color led?
| Mechie3 | 05-03-2007 01:44 PM |
If you follow my tutorial and use white leds with blue/red stage gels (high quality/heat resistant cellophane) you don't have those issues.
| wrx_impreza04 | 05-03-2007 03:02 PM |
it looks like your tutorial only covered the gauges. which looks like its very helpfull, and very time consuming. Did you change the center console color also?
| Mechie3 | 05-03-2007 03:09 PM |

Of course! I have the auto HVAC though, so Red is the way to go. The knob faces are made from green plastic and blue becomes teal.
Cell phone pic time!

The clock is actually the only thing I have left to do.

you should put a strip of window tint over it now. so it doesn't look like there is a blue rectangle

Whoa, back from the dead!
No, I did not use this paint for the cluster. I originally did direct LED swap and sanded the green crap off. I have since upgraded following mechie3's tutorial and it is much better.
olsen726 - that probably would look good, but I don't have any to try it.
Glad to see people have used the search function and found this :)
