yeah, mine were crap. so i took it to the dealer and they changed them for free. my AC compressor was too loud for me too. so i took it in to see if that was normal. and they agreed. changed that too. but the new one they put in is just as loud so i don't know.
cliff notes : take it in to the dealer and get them to change the wipers.

My 2004 WRX is the first car that I have had to replace the factory wiper blades within a few months of purchase. The point where the drivers side wiped over the path of the passenger side blade would not get clean and leave a thin film of water. The replacement blades work much better.

My wipers are turning to crap also. It's time to replace them as well.:furious:

that was the EXACT situation with my wipers. the driver's side wiper left a thin film of water while retracting to the original horizontal position.

Exactly my problem aswell.
As this seems to be true of factory equipt Subaru wipers, I just went to pepboys and bought some Boshe ones for $20. They work great.

Sounds like you allare not cleaning your windsheilds very well. Sounds like a film of grease? No matter how good your wipers are they wont work if the windsheild is greasy from road grime.
My wife's Baja has had the original wiper blades since 20k miles with no problems. As long as I keep the glass clean and use good wiper fluid.
Can you find something less trvial to complain about than wiper blades?
You have an STi for God's sake

Nope, thats waht I thought at first to. I cleaned the hellout of the windshield and nothing improved. All I had to do is replace the wipers and everything was flawless. If it was the windshield then that would not have worked either.
| Samirr76 | 03-06-2004 03:05 PM |
Well then go out and buy a set of wiper blades and stop bitching.
| Mr. Natural | 03-06-2004 03:08 PM |
Interesting, I was going to comment on this myself. I wash my car frequently including the wiper blades to make sure they are clean, but I've also noticed they don't work very well. I can't stand looking out of a streaky, smeared windshield and that's what I wind up with whenever I use the wipers. I guess I'll be replacing them. I was thinking of putting some RainX on the window to see if that helps. Yes it's a minor annoyance, but I was curious if others were noticing this.
| Samirr76 | 03-06-2004 03:13 PM |
Rain-x will improve even the best windsheild wiper performance.
I got a pair of ebay MTEC wipers (titanium) and they work very well, especially when paired with rain-x.
The OEM ones lasted a good two years BTW with no problems.

Most people would assume that a $25,000 car would come with wipers that work. Mine didn't work worth a crap the very first time I used them. After several good washings of the windshield and blades I came to the conclusion that it must be the blades.
Factory blades should last 6 months to a year at least. There should be no reason to have to replace them right away.
Not that it's a lot of money but it sure was aggravating figuring out what was wrong.

My factory blades are still on and performing perfectly- 22,800 miles since Feb. of '02. Wow, I must have gotten a really good car-I only paid $18,800 for mine and the wipers still work... Brian

seems like all the 02's got good wiper blades! :p :D
just take it to a Subaru dealer, windsheild wipers are covered under the 3/36 warranty.
(so are light bulbs, brake pads, clutch discs, and all other wear items)

PIAA Super Sporzas - Do a search in the reviews section. Got a set, and they're excellent. Best thing - no RainX needed.

Exactly.
Besides, time = money.
Lets see. I'll have to drop the car off at the dealer and get a ride to work. Be without the car most of the day and then get a ride back to the dealer to pick it up. Hopefully they have actually replaced the blades and not just cleaned everything (assuming replacements were actually better). Or, drop by the local auto parts store and spend $15. Install them in 5 minutes and be done with it.
I can tell you which one i'd rather do. Then again neither should have been required.

the reality is that most minor factory parts that come stock on the car are crap. Ex: tires, wipers, etc... So you have to replace them. It's a part of life. Unless you're living in a place where it rains year round (sorry for all of you in seatle) your wipers are gonna dry out in the summer as they sit out in the sun and bake on your windshield. A simple solution = just drive real fast so all the water beads right off of your windshild! :)

I wonder who makes Subaru's wipers?
My dad uses PIAA's on his XTerra and there's never been a problem. ESPICALLY cool is the no-need for Rain-X.
I use some crappy ones on the 94 that I bought to last the trip home from CT.

Get the Teflon wipers. They work great! Rain X causes silicon build up. Eventually you'll need to use The NO-Touch glass stripper to clean off the build up. Its good to use it evry so often. Stops streaking

An '02er chiming in here -- I think the stock wipers are BAD in snow. Either that, or some combination of the wipers and my new windshield. But my guess is the wipers. Every time it snows ice builds up on the wipers and then they are useless -- all they do is wipe streaks of water across the windshield. It's a very hazardous situation because I am straining to peer out of the one tiny spot in my windshield where I can see clearly. I've never had that problem on older cars with cheap-o wipers. Definitely changing my wipers before next winter.

Another vote for PIAAs... So far in complete Houston-style flooding downpour, they've worked most excellently. Now if only the people slowing down for the puddles would get out of the friggin way!!!

I had 24,000 miles (two years) on my OEM wipers before they wore out. Replaced them with Trico Teflon blades last week and the passenger side has been skipping/chattering constantly since.
This ticks me off because I used the same blades on VW's in the past and they were the best I've ever used. It must have something to do with the pressure of the arm, but it's something that I can't seem to fix, and let me tell you, it's freaking annoying!

This is interesting.
For some time my passenger side wiper has been smearing and not clearing the window effectively, despite replacing the blades a few times. I thought it might be road grime impregnated in the windshield but I had my windshield replaced last year and it didn't change, even with the brand new window and a new set of blades.
I finally determined the spring in that wiper arm was weaker than it's supposed to be, I could feel the difference by picking up the two arms but I also was able to measure the spring pressure with a gauge. The passenger arm was much weaker than the driver side. It isn't supposed to be quite as strong since the driver side has a much longer blade, but this one was just too weak.
The solution, since the car is out of warranty, was to go to the dealer and get a new wiper arm. It's not an expensive part, about $30 list. Problem solved.

I've thought about doing that myself because I'm sure I bent the arm a bit changing the blades, I just can't figure out if I made too much or too little pressure, as well as how did the angle change.
Don't ask how the arm got bent....it's amazing how stupid you get at changing wiper blades when you do it once every year or two :furious:

If the spring is weak, just bending the arm won't make that much difference. The arm would still have to be replaced.

Buy the Anco winter blades (with the rubber boot over the wiper frame). The rubber boot prevents snow/ice from freezing to the frame and windshield. Even a couple months old Bosch wipers on my girlfriend's Civic didn't fare well when it snowed (or when it was piled up on her windshield). I used the Anco's on my STi, and they worked great all winter.

My problem seems to be temp dependent. Today is warmer and the Trico's work just like I remember them. Totally silent, streakless and super clear wipe. It's not raining today, but I washed the windshield while driving several times to test them out, and even let them wipe while dry and had no problems at all. That's how I remember this blade working on the VW.
