Blue painters tape!

So, im leaving for Harrisburg next Friday for Tuner Wars. My car is in the paint booth now and should be all baked up and ready to go by Monday. Here is the question since my painter sucks and didn't know. lol
If I put blue painters tape on the front bumper, side skirts, etc, that won't affect the paint, correct? I've never put tape on my car so if you have or know someone who has just post up and let me know! Thanks. ;)

painters tape will not affect the paint....
it's masking tape.
comes right off
wash/wax... no residue

Well to answer your question...it won't effect the paint that has been there over a period of time. I know since i've used it before from my whole front end. I wouldn't really worry about it damaging the paint because the tape has a special resin that sticks but doesn't leave nasty residue. I remember reading this somewhere on the boards.
On my car, I washed and fully waxed the car then applied the tape. About 1 week later, i removed it and the areas that were covered were "babies ass" smooth lol. GL

you're good homie, my front end and skirts will be covered in tape too...im just worried about snowy conditions..
it would be such a pain to detail the cars indoors with no water if they get all salty/snowy

D,
Why not try using a good thick cling film, so the car has a clear look instead of the blue tape all over it?

^^I was getting ready to recommend a nice clear front end film also. D you might want to look into it since it is a new paint job. You dont want to end up with some rock chip especially with a pearl job. Have fun with the Blue stuff lol, Ive used it a few time while running my car at a road corse track. I think it sucks if it gets wet though.
| Nitro Don | 02-07-2007 11:57 AM |
I would make sure its "automotive" painters tape. The regular home painters tape tends to stick and leave glue once wet.

repainting already?

sort of off-topic but not, not meaning to hi-jack either but......
i'll be going to the 100AcreWood rally for Rally-america in 2 weeks and i'm going to have... GET to drive it on the course, and i may have some fun... should i put painter's tape on just the bumper and skirts or half way up the body lol
or is it all useless for going onto a rally course?...the part i'll most likely be on has small rocks... some big, and of course... dirt!

That's what im worried about. I am going to bring a rag and just wet it in the bathroom, wipe the car down, and then hit it with the absorber. After that, just a couple coats of wax and I should be ready to roll. I can't wait to see how my detail from the night before holds up on a 3 hr drive. lol

Yup, I already told the painter. I went and seen the car today, of course it doesn't start because I took the intercooler pipes off for powdercoat, but oh well, it's just sitting there. He COMPLETELY stripped all the paint off, used a flex primer, and re painted it, well the parts I needed to be done. In the side skirt areas he applied a chip guard coat, spray application that would help prevent chipping in those areas.
Thanks everyone, I guess it will be fine to tape her up. Looks like ill be driving the car up BLUE. ;)

Any hardware store will carry it (Ace, Home Depot, Lowe's,etc...) There are a few different sizes so make sure you get the widest roll, not sure what the size is. I think one roll will suit you fine unless you decide to go crazy, and it's not cheap about $8.00 I believe for a roll. Good Luck at the show D.

I don't believe so,you should be golden. That stuff doesn't have any bleed through so it shouldn't be able to absorb water.I would overlap the tape when you put it on.

Put some of the tape on a neighbor's car/co-worker's car and get it wet, let it set a bit and peal it off. I know that's mean, so make sure you find a real crappy car or something.:D

Will the painters tape stick to a freshly waxed car, or should I wash the newness off the wax first?

I've only used the tape after a fresh wax and nothing has happened. I think it would be better since you have a fresh coat of wax between your paint and the tape. After you peel it off give it a spray of some quick detailer or maybe some spray wax if you want.

will the heat from the engine and the sun do any harm?
also, the car will be parked in a paid parking garage for 3 days/nights
It's humid here so i'm a bit paranoid about things like this
