F1 at Spa...its back! picks part 1

F1 at Spa...its back! picks
Will this be Schuy's magical 7th world title?

Will McLaren comback and race again?

1st turn incident? (I know, I always say that...)

Williams? Who's that?

Next to the Monaco GP, this is my favorite F1 circuit. A true traditional drivers course in this era of "no-fun circuits". Whether we like Schuy or not, one cannot express the incredible driving abilities and accomplishments he has done. I feel this weekend may be his last hard drive in his career. After he wins here, he'll somewhat cruise the rest of the year. After this year I think he might step down. Whattya think?

Anyways, here are my picks:

1. Barichello- great race, rain conditions and strategy makes him 1st
2. Schuy- saving the big win for Monza
3. Raikkonen- McLaren is back in a better car than ever
4. Button- Impressive drive but makes mistake at end
5. Sato- Impressive drive but makes mistake in beginning
6. Montoya- already thinking bout next year at McL.
7. Alonzo- bad weather creates problems
8. David C.- who's that?

Pick away!
WRC Wagon 08-25-2004 10:20 AM

I wouldn't say Sato=mistakes.. remember this is a guy who's made few.. but how many times has his motor let go this year?
gtguy 08-25-2004 11:13 AM

Speaking of Sato, notice how they gave him his revs back? In qualifying they were showing the telemetry. Button was revving to about 17.9K, while Sato was closer to 19K.

As for the picks:

1. M. Schumacher (Spa is a driver's track, and he's simply the best driver out there)
2. K. Raikkonen (McLaren will be back with a vengeance, and Spa rewards good pilots)
3. R. Barrichello (close, but no cigar)
4. Montoya (a great driver who can't close the deal. And who knows how his car is performance-wise, given that he's a lame duck?)
5. Sato (will finish ahead of Button, if he doesn't crash in Eau Rouge)
6. Button (circumspection will be his enemy)
7. Pizzonia (The Pizza Man will deliver)
8. Alonso (will make the usual great start)

Mind you, if it rains, throw everything out the window, and look for another Ferrari 1-2, thanks to the Bridgestone rain tires.

Hopefully this one will be a bit more exciting than Hungary:

1. MS - While it would be nice to save wrapping up the Driver's title until Monza, his competiveness (and amazing skill) will bring him the win
2. RB - He'll get his win in Brazil
3. JB - A nice bounce back from a poor showing in Hungary
4. FA - Doesn't make it to the podium this time, but is close
5. KR - The car doesn't blow up on him, but it isn't the uber-car that everyone thinks it is
6. JPM - About as good as you could expect fromt he Williams car
7. TS - A silly mistake will cost him a couple places during the race
8. GF - 1 more point for Sauber!

I think BAR took my idea of punishing Button for his 'betrayal' by giving him Sato's engine. :disco:

Hopefully someone other then Schumi but all I really care about is a good race. Ahem, looking your way Hungary.

My fearless picks for this week. Need to get back on the podium.

1. MS - drivers track, best driver, best car
2. Raikkonen - car coming around
3. RB - Rubinho is not as quick as Kimi all things being equal
4. Button - Jenson's come of age. He's deiving well and his car is good
5. JPM - Great driver, crappy car puts him this low
6. Alonso
7. Trulli
8. Sato
The last 3 are best of the rest.

BTW:

My favorite 5 F1 drivers whom I have personally watched race:

1. Senna
2. Nigel
3. MS
4. Jean Alesi
5. Damon Hill - he makes the list due to his incredible near win with Arrows

Spa-Francorchamps... the best!
Does it strike you as an affront to the gods of motor racing that F1 did not race at Spa-Francorchamps, yet, at the same time, continued to race at that little kart track known as the Hungaroring?!? That was just wrong!

But now, we're back... back to the best track in Europe, finally!

If this race is dry, we will get to see how the new (2nd half season) versions of BAR-Honda, BMW-Williams, and Mercedes-McLaren measure up against each other. This track rewards horsepower, and well balanced chassis so all three teams may do well here, whereas Renault's advantage of driveability torque, and chassis grip accelerating out of corners is not much of an asset here.

Furthermore, if it is a wet race, then we will see if Michelin has done very much homework on their wet tire... But I suspect that if it is wet we will see Giancarlo's Sauber slice up through the top Michelin runners to claim many points.

Having said that, here are my picks:

Michael - Michael's history here is incredible...
Rubens - Ferrari is incredible
Jenson - He's got horsepower, and grippy well balanced chassis.
Kimi - The new chassis works. If it don't break, KR is grabbing points!
Juan - The new nose balances the chassis, BMW hp is good, too.
Giancarlo - It's supposed to rain, in which case, he will finish higher than this.
Takuma - If it rains, BAR will be wishing they had stayed on b-stones.
David - Whatta season he's had... but liking the new car now.
skuttledude 08-27-2004 09:04 AM

I totally agree..

I do not like the Hungry circuit at all. Very boring...year after year. Why is it there?? ($$ I bet:))

Spa should be a permanent race. As well as Monaco, Monza, Silverstone.
Hockenheim use to be interesting but not laggs. Oh wel..
AndyRoo 08-27-2004 11:54 AM

heres hoping for a good race...i forgot what i picked.

would like to see Fisi tear it up.

Raikknen, Montoya, Button and Sato being so far back should make for some interesting racing. So far it looks like MS will be hard to beat, though. Despite running in worse conditions and nearly losing it in Les Combes he was a quarter of a second ahead of Trulli in the second sector, then lost some time in the wetter third sector.
AndyRoo 08-28-2004 12:56 PM

even the qualifying was waaaay more exciting then hungary!

apparently barrichello did great, up until the new bus stop where he lost time.

my wishful thinking:

Barrichello, MS, and Fisi will battle for first in some nice heavy rain.
grandpa rex 08-28-2004 03:24 PM

The new bus stop sux.
Dussander 08-28-2004 10:02 PM

Seriously.... I waited there for ever and the damn bus never showed up. I kid..
They said only 10% chance of rain tomorrow. I guess we will see who went out with a dry setup for qualifying.
rupertberr 08-28-2004 10:28 PM

1. Trulli :)

Hmmm. My favorite F-1 drivers who I personally saw race and met in person( I might be older then you Grandpa Rex :D )

In Alphabetical Order;

Mario Andretti Ferrari
Jacques Laffite Ligier
Jan Lammers ATS
Niki Lauda McLaren
Nelson Piquet Brabham
Clay Reggazzoni Williams
Carlos Reutemann Williams
Keke Rosberg Fittipaldi
Gilles Villenueve Ferrari

Bonus team owner and designers
Colin Chapman in Vegas
Gordon Murray in Detroit
artkevin 08-28-2004 11:01 PM

Man rupertberr, you are old. I agree with grandpa rex, the new bus stop sux. What was wrong with the old one? Too much excitement? I think they let Herman Tikkle (?) get his dirty little fun killing hands on this one too.
gtguy 08-28-2004 11:33 PM

Here's some scary stuff:

Trulli was on intermediates (he said in the press conference) while M. Schumacher was on Bridgestone's "extreme" tire, which is a step beyond a full wet tire. And Schumacher was about four tenths ahead, but took it really easy at the Bus Stop, where he lost all the time.

Ferrari, we know, are on a dry setup (which is even scarier, given how much rain there was during their qualifying run). McLaren seems to be, as well.

I LOVE Spa. Sure, the new Bus Stop isn't as exciting, but that's like complaining about a mole on Tyra Banks' lower back. Man, when they showed the in-car of those guys going through Eau Rouge, I got chills.

Kevin
artkevin 08-29-2004 12:26 AM

There is a great pic on f1-live.com of Eddie Irvine going through Eau Rouge back in '02 I think. It shows the car climbing the hill and plank dust shooting up with all the aero pushing it into a straight line. I think it is the best shot of an F1 car I have ever seen. Its all the car is about in one shoot. If I wanted to give them $40 I would get it from their priemium service and post it but I am just too cheap for that.

Looks like that media dude in England is going to be running around Silverstone buck-@$$ naked. Mr. Raikkonen takes care of business in Spa!!!!! It's about time McLaren gets their stuff together. Too bad it's too late for this season. Pretty good race overall, especially considering McLaren is tops today:)

rupertberr 08-29-2004 10:26 AM

Well done Kimi! Great race on a great track.

Stealing a line from my British journalist friends: Spa is a "proper" race track!

They should sell tickets to the Silverstone naked lap.
artkevin 08-29-2004 10:51 AM

Thats what racing looks like.
The emotion of that race was so big. Jungle boy looked like he was going to cry, Zonta probably did too under his helmet. Even Ice-Man Kimi pumped his fist when he won. Everything about that race was good except the retirements. Sorry Renault.

Your list is impressive. I've always wished I could have watched Gilles Villeneuve.

I started following the sport only in 1992. I don't know how old you are rupertburr, but I know I'm one of the older guys around here.

I started following Formula One in 1978. Started collecting Autocourse in 1979. Villeneuve vs Arnoux at the 1979 French GP was probably the greatest final lap ever. The Osterreichring was my first GP. :)
gtguy 08-29-2004 05:28 PM

Awesome drive from Raikkonen. Poise, style, confidence and a resurgent McLaren that must make Montoya smile. That car is fast.

That final safety car played right into Raikkonen's hands. Schumacher was gaining on him, taking advantage of the slow-building Bridgestones and the Michelin falloff, when the race was yellow-flagged. As KR said in the press conference, he wasn't worried about Schumacher, because the Michelins are great the first two laps after cooling down. I think MS knew better too, and just sat up, so to speak.

Montoya showed us the best of times, and the worst of times. His pass on Schumacher was pretty awesome. His "pass" on Trulli wasn't. One supposes justice was done, as Trulli, with his ailing car, finished about where he was going to, while Montoya DNFed. Aggressive is one thing, thuggish is something else.

Button had things set up pretty well, until his Michelin gave up, like too many other competitors.

All in all a great race at a great track.

The press conference was quite funny. James Allen asked Schumacher about his tires, and Schumacher gracefully (but pointedly) deflected the question. But the Bridgestones were pretty awful today. They didn't use the newest-spec tire, which combines the early performance of the Michelins and the durability of the Bridgestones, because they didn't have enough data to feel confident running them at Spa.

And just think, the next race is Monza. Two such iconic tracks, back-to-back. I love it.

StuBeck 08-29-2004 10:03 PM

One thing about Montoyas inicdent with Trulli is that a similar thing happened at Bahrain with Ralf and Sato. Sato was in the same place that Ralf was and it was deemed Ralfs fault. Montoya was halfway up the car going into the turn, you've got to let the other person through at that point.
Don Arm 08-29-2004 10:15 PM

Well Mclaren finally does it !!!!!
Hopefully Kimi and Mclaren are back.
Bonzo 08-29-2004 11:59 PM

Spa is one truely great road course. One day...

Very similar to my local track of Road America. Both true road courses.

wtg Kimi. Great to see some new color on top.

I remember watching Gilles and his brother Jacques circling the frozen ovals in the northern US competing in the USSA snowmobile race series back in the late 60 thru the early 70's. Even then Gilles was known as a rather emotional driver. Very talented but a bit wild at times. fwiw Jocko still races ice ovals. He is da man, for this is a tough, young mans sport. I also remember watching Jocko win his first and only CART event at RdAmer in 1983.
AndyRoo 08-30-2004 12:17 AM

wow, that certainly was an exciting race. I can't believe I actually had two (!) teenie boppin 15 year old teenage girls watching and be genuinely interested in it and asking me questions about it.

I usually clear out the room when I watch F1, but not this time.

Safety car was out a lot though. I guess it should have been with all those crashes, but watching them lap following the safety car got a little old.

and congrats to kimi.

I dunno about that one. I think you also have to pass when there's room. Essentially, Montoya wanted to have two cars be in the same spot (on the racing line), but that spot was already occupied. So Trulli lost out. He would have been better off trying the outside pass. That move only worked with Schumacher because he saw Montoya, and figured the championship was worth more than teaching JPM a lesson about tact. I don't think that Trulli was so inclined.

Kevin
iamrazor 08-30-2004 11:15 AM

Yes, they seem to be using the saftey car more often now. Personally, i think that 1st lap incident should've caused a red flag. Sure, Spa is a long track and the safety crews will have more time to clean up after an incident by the time the field comes around again. However, i think when the SC is deployed it might make the clean up crews work too fast and miss something that could be another potential danger. Furthermore, if the track is still dirty when they go green, the top of Eau Rouge is not the place to find out!
Even at Indy when ralf crashed, they should've used the red flag.
When there's a large incident / heavy crash on track, why use the saftey car and not the red flag?
anyone? anyone?
My second thought: if they(the FIA) want to keep the race exciting and as many cars in the race as they can, throwing the red flag would allow some of the competitors to hop in the spare cars and compete.
Dr. WOT 08-30-2004 11:55 AM

First off, great race. Perhaps a bit sloppy at times, but what a relief after several uneventful races in a row to finally get some good action on the track.

Great job by Kimi, he was brilliant... the pass on MS was breathtaking. The pass on DC was also great, too bad the idiot director missed the whole thing. The fact that he had a problem with his gearshift makes it that much more impressive; is this his best drive in F1 yet?

I agree about JPM, what was a great piece of oppertunistic overtaking on Schumacher turned into pure sheit when he mugged Trulli. JT was always comfortably ahead, the corner was his. I think it was proper that the FIA investigated the incident, anybody hear a verdict on that?

I was pleased to see JPM get bitched by Massa going into Eau Rouge, I guess not even he is that stupid. PM truly has nothing to lose, unlike Schumacher who decided it was better to finish the race.

iamrazor, I agree completely. Just like Indy, we saw a number of cars cut tires throughout the race, which you basically never see in an incident free race. Obviously they did not do a good enough job cleaning up after the first lap incident at La Source. Then Jordan ran over a front wing and it shattererd into a million pieces, directly on the racing line.

I also agree it would be good to allow those who got caught up in the chaos to restart... with a field of only 20 cars, and sponsors wanting to get their money's worth, they should have restarted that race.

Speaking of the first lap, does anyone know what happened to Sato going through Eau Rouge? I watched the reply, but couldn't quite make out what happened. Did he lose it all on his own, or did Montoya cut him off causing him to spin? That spin was the cause of about 3 or 4 other cars crashing.

Takuma Sato, BAR (DNF):
"...and I was running in 8th position. I then saw Mark Webber going downhill towards Eau Rouge extremely slowly with his front wing missing and the problem was that he was in the middle of the racing line, so that is why I had to hit the brakes quite hard to avoid him. Montoya was overtaking me on the right-hand side at the top of the hill whilst I was passing Webber on his right, and I became sandwiched between the two cars. I didn't know what happened at the time, but Webber then hit me..."

One other thought: Thank goodness Button's car did not outright kill Baumgartner in the Minardi. The replay demonstrates just how close that came to being a REALLY ugly situation when his car pitched to the right and spiked the Minardi.

Do you think Sato really said that or was that his translator?

:D

JPM was right up alongside Schumacher on the first pass, brilliant.

JPM's front tires were alongside Trulli's back tires on the second attempt. Right of way Trulli.

The difference between brilliant and not so brilliant is about that much.

I thought the pace car driver was hauling. I think they said he was an ex DTM driver and it showed. He had pace. :D

I think the reasoning for the pace car is that too many crashes happen after just one standing start. Wear and tear on the clutch isn't so good either. It has to be real bad to throw the red flag now.

Forgot that Gilles started his career racing snowmobiles. The fog is clearing.

Yes, I was coming back to amend that. Apparently Webber is to blame, as he drove into Eau Rouge on the racing line with no front wing. An accident was inevitable. Really hideous judgment if you ask me.

Good call bringing up Button - Baumgartner... it was really poor luck for Zoldt, but I think it was amazing luck for Jenson. Had the Minardi not been there, the BAR could have had a HUGE impact. Instead he harmlessly slid to a nice gentle stop.

I certainly can't claimthat wasn't anything other than luck with this race!Although I have has DC and Fisi in there a lot lately. Looks like we overwhelmingly thought MS was going to do it again.

What a great race!

That SLK pace car is one of the meanest sounding cars I have ever heard. The first time I heard it I almost wanted to hear its engine more then the F1's.

It's hard to believe such a meanacing sound can come from such a cute little car....

Speaking of menacing sounds, did anyone catch the Brit blasting around a wet circuit in the Pagani Zonda last night on "Fifth Gear"...........that little jewel packs the Mercedes-AMG, 7.3 liter, 12 cylinder engine....
