bulletproof glass?
This is more out of curiosity, but does anyone have bulletproof glass on one of their vehicles? What are the limits of it? Would it work in close range, like a car-jacking scenario? Would it be heavier or lighter than stock glass? Costs??? Legality issues?
Any insight about this is appreciated. Sometimes I have to drive through some rough neighborhoods, so I figured I'd at least look into it. Plus, it should be much safer in an accident...
I found sites like this: http://www.autoglasschina.com/ and http://www.glasssentinal.com/qa.htm and http://www.dupont.com/automotive/applications/exterior/windap3a.html

As far as the legality: There are no restrictions of any kind for armoring your vehicle, other than possible weight limits. But, bullet proof glass is VERY heavy...
| Zypper | 02-26-2002 03:39 PM |
Well all the armor designs I have seen require frames on the door, so Subarus wouldn't do that hot, as in their window glass is frameless.

As a valet in Downtown Seattle, I drove Bill Gate's personal Lexus. It has bulletproof glass for the front windshield and it really distorts the vision out of the sides of the windshield. I would definitely not want to drive around all the time with distorted vision out of my windshield.

I worked at a plastics distributor for a while.
Bullet proof glass isn't really glass it's plastic (We know that) Lexan is NOT bullet proof glass, Lexan is the generic name for Plexiglass.
UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight) plastic is whats used for bullet proof appliations and it is REALLY REALLY REALLY FRICKIN' EXPENSIVE!!! It also has to be very thick to be effective especially at car jacking like point black range. It would be very expensive to refit a WRX window to be bullet proof. There is a company that does conversions though, they were listed in a recent issue of Maxim. Believe it cost somewhere between 50-200k to fully convert a car. Plus it adds hundreds of pounds.
My advice? Get a Glock 17 and a conceal carry permit and shoot them first.
Have a nice day!

Your way wrong about it being safe in an accident! If you got in an accident and the all the doors are jammed shut. Your SOL! Especially if a small fire broke out. You'll be dead before the rescue crew could save you. Or what happens if your car goes into a lake and the doors are jammed? What I'm trying to say is that your windows are emergence exits if you can't get out through your doors. If your so worried about car jacking just don't drive through that part of town. And visit Clifford's website and try this.

Mark,
There is a bulletproofing tint that you can have applied to your windows. It's a special tint that is installed like any other tint. The difference is, when the glass is hit w/ a bullet, the glass will break, but the bullet will not make it through. The problem with this though is that if you fall into water or what not... you won't be able to break your windows to get out of your car. If you do go for bulletproofing... get cranks for your windows. :)
P.
Oh... it's not too expensive though. But still more expensive than regular tint.
Oh... and it's also available in clear. :)

Yeah, I thought about that, I wouldn't be able to use the blunt metal rod I keep under my seat to bash out a window. And an accident is more likely than a car-jacking...:(
Goose, yeah, I'm scared to death of my crazy stalker! The woman is nuts! I'm about to hire a personal bodyguard!
As for your suggestion to get a Glock, allenm, I live in NJ! The strictest Gun control state there is! Without being an officer or security guard, it is darn well impossible to get a permit to carry (and I wouldn't want to anyway:p)
Pat, I think your tint suggestion is probably best. And since my '94 L windows are manual roll down, I should be ok, barring some crazy accident that immobilizes every door and window in my car!. Maybe I'll leave the rear windows untinted just to be safe, too.
Also, I like the Black Jax suggestion. Even better, I hunted around, and found that my Viper 800 ESP is car-com compatible, so I'm considering that as well.
Thanks guys.

I find it very hard to believe that tint can stop a bullet. That it can keep the glass in a sheet, sure, but i would think the bullet would go right thru. Do you have any links to info on the stuff?

Done some research:
Here is the site for Glass Sentinal, which is a tint that can even be clear, that is highly bullet resistant, causes no distortion, and should make break-ins via windows near impossible:
http://www.glasssentinal.com/qa.htm
Also, here's how bulletproof glass works:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question476.htm
Here's a place that will completely armor a vehicle. It's wild to read what they'll do, even though it costs over 50k. I think the dual-ram bumpers are the coolest...I guess I'd have to get rid of my aluminum hood though!

If I wanted to break into my car I could do it without breaking a thing. I know with the coupe you just have to slide a coat hanger through the window glass and the soft rubber seal. And hit the easy to get to power lock switch. Yes, the alarm will go off but the right person can disable that in seconds. I think that's why I'm going to upgrade my car alarm with the Clifford one.

I wonder if it's that easy with my aftermarket power locks (my '94 L came with manual locks). There is only one switch for them, and it's located on the dash. Otherwise, you have to manually lock and unlock them.

uh, there is no such thing as bullet-proof (resistant) tint film. It has to be laminated with multiple layers of materials. And the glass tends to be real thick, around 1-3 inches.;) Real armored cars, like the Presidents' limo is heavily armored with three inch thick glass that does not roll down and you should see the frame on that door.:D

Bullet proof glass would be very bad in an accident. if your head hits the windshield or side window, you want that window to give a bit so your brain doesn't get squashed by the impact.

How 'bout as a theft deterant? If someone couldnt' get the doors open, and couldn't smash thru the glass, it they would effectively be "deterred." :D

Ok that tint is not bullet proof or resistant or anything. I have it on my car the only thing it does is keep the glass in a sheet. Like say someone walks up and hits it with a bat. The glass will not just drop. all it is is a thin metal tint. it isn't really that expensive. It can take a harder hit than untinted glass tho. I locked my self out of my old truck while camping once and had to bust a window. I used a claw hammer. I spent the better part of a hour hammering on the damn glass before i had a hole in it. Then it was a pain to get the hole big enough so I could reach in. Cool stuff but no bullet stopper. Think about it a bullet resistant vest is roughly a 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Try adding something like that to your window:lol: then you have to secure it. Its just not feasible. Better to just buy a car this company has modified http://blackarmor.com/Cars_Index.htm then your ready to go out the door and its a vehicle that they chose to use becuase of its size and wieght capabilities. If you are serious tho Bondurant will do it to. But a impreza is not a good choice. Go with something that has some power to move things out of its way. I recomend a hummer or SUV. both do well at running things over.

Not if it's armored, like the Suburban/Hummer, and possibly even 750il options mentioned above. They are even equiped with tires that can still be driven on for 60 miles at 60 mph AFTER all 4 are blown out!
I was curious about "bulletproof" glass more for extra security against break-ins (I have STi seats, Apex'i AVC-R and Power FC, column mounted gauges, sound system...ie, thief-attracting stuff). And extra protection against stray bullets from drive-bys, or car jackers weapons of choice, etc, is cool.

Bullet resistant Integra...
I had a GS-R that took a slug in the roof a few years ago, just a few inches behind the moonroof glass. I tried to measure the hole but it was kinda curled - 9mm was my best guess.
It happened around July 4 in Texas, so presumably somebody shot into the air, and it landed on my car. The bullet penetrated the roof, but did NOT enter the passenger compartment. I don't think it happened while I was driving, but if it did, the car saved my dog's life - he liked to ride with his head between the seats just under where it impacted!
I never got the bullet out, I simply stuck a refrigerator magnet over the hole, it sealed up and stayed okay until she got stolen.

copy of email from armoring company...only 30 grand for Impreza!
For the fun of it, here's a copy of an email I recieved about armoring an Impreza, FWIW:
Dear Mr. Levine,
Thank you for your interest in our products and concerning the armoring of you 1994 Subaru Impreza L.
In such a compact car I would not recommend any higher protection of our Level III protection which includes ballistic resistance up to .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, 9 mm ammunition. Such armoring will cost you US$29,500.00
The armoring of such vehicle is depedent upon availability of glass from glass companies because it is a model that has never been armored before. Time of delivery can vary from 45 to 60 days after receiving the vehicle and a 50% deposit on the price of the armoring from you.
Of course, all of the lateral sides will be armoring as well as the roof and back sides.
Please contact me with any further questions or visit us at www.armormax.com
Sincerely,
Francisco Ruiz

Also keep in mind many drive by bullets are rifle rounds. There is a reason he didn't mention .223 or 7.62 in his message. The armor may stop one of those rounds but the next will come right on through. You could always just steal the presidents suburban. Im sure it can take multipule hits no problem. Level III will not tho. Even IIIA can not stop 7.62 which is a AK-47 round. In vests I know a IVA vest can stop that round but you don't want to move for a week after it. A cheaper route would be to buy a big gun and a bullet resistant vest. Then work on your driving skills to get you out of bad situations.

Lexan is an actual brand name polycarbonet sheet from GE. That is break resistant. Their MR10 sheet has a ten year warranty :
If LEXAN sheet breaks, yellows or exhibits loss of light transmission due to UV exposure within ten (10) years from the date of sale, the purchaser will receive a replacement sheet, provided the broken sheet, original sales receipt and warranty are returned to the original dealer.
Plexiglas (also a brand name) by Atohaas is an acrylic resin and burns vigorously with intense heat.
(No Warranty)
Regular Lexan has a five (5) year warranty.
These are copied from the product.
www.bannerglass.com
Even the stuff we install in banks is bullet resistant glass not proof. And that is 1" lexan bonded to 1/2"laminated glass. And is extremely heavy.
Try www.aavi.com or www.alpinearmoring.com for vehicles.
To the Mercedes owner, that was just insulated glass that they tried for a couple years and abondoned. The outer piece was tinted, the inner was clear. The rear door list for $964 and vent glass $563.

bullet proof glass would be kind of a waste of money if you didn't add kevlar reinforcement to the door panels.
I worked for a company once that built a couple of bullet proof SUVs as concept cars. Showed them at police equip shows. Epuipped with HD water cannons and such. Those things were so heavy the biggest problem was suspension upgrades.

Why Bother?
Go buy a Ferret MK II
can be made street legal since it has lights turn signals and only 4 wheels touch the ground at the same time :-)
16K not bad and only a short drive away in NC..
NOW THATS PROTECTION!

Ant-theft device
I would have to reccomend the cost saving route of installing a home made security system. Try duct-taping a tazer to the outside door handle from the the inside of the car (just cut a hole in the interior), so if anybody ever tries to open the door all you have to do is push the button and laugh your arse off. Hire a giant wookie to sleep under your car at night, I'm sure that will deter most anyone.
