Digital Gauge Install!

I got my digital gauge and installed it!
The digital gauge is for an old skool Impreza but fits right on a New Age Impreza...
And if you didn't know, it gives you thermometer, altimeter/barometer and a compass!

Could you comment on the quality of the pod itself? Does it match the WRX dash color and texture?
Nice install instructions by the way! Let us know if you get the speed sensor wire puzzle worked out.

The pod is really good. Color and texture are great. It looks slightly different since it's a hard plastic instead of vinyl covered like the rest of the dash but it looks okay.
Basically if you turned the clock from an innie to an outie, that's what it'd look like :D
And the speed wire, yeah, I'm working on that next.

yea... i was thinking the same thing. you found the speed sensor wire, did you try hooking it up to that?
btw, i just ordered it from SubieGal anyway. <$170 shipped with the pod. the pod is an actual Subaru WRX part, so it should match perfect!

yep.. OEM pod... and the gauge pack (sold separately) can be fit to the new impreza, as well as the older models...
this gauge pack is of limited supply as it's on clearance from subaru... when they're gone.. they're gone!
lemme know if anyone has questions regarding prices/availability...

those are the connectors going into the ecu, which should be located on the passenger side foot well

Hm, but shouldn't there be one going to the speedo too?
I would have imagined that the wiring harness from the MY98-01 Imprezas wouldn't be all that different from the New Age ones... could be wrong though.
Hm.

well, don't know which one it would be behind the guage cluster, but if all else fails, maybe you can try to tap the signal directly from the ecu....i'm sure there's a wire behind the cluster, or maybe even an "un-used" harness, but i don't know either
good luck

OK- so, the ECU looks pretty straightforward- run the wire from the guage pack down to the ECU- but do you just tap the wire into the ECU? Is there a special connector, or what? And the ECU, if I'm not mistaken, is in the passenger footwell, no?

There's a connector that lets you tap into the wire... but how and where it is exactly (and if there's a closer option other than going to the passenger footwell) I'm not clear about yet.
I'll try to get a pict in the daytime.

The compass works but it seems touchy sometimes... I'm going to use a normal compass to kinda confirm it works.
Also, when you start the car it has to be switched from barometer to alt all the time and the altimeter is off at times as well.
But other than that it's a pretty nice setup.
Here's some daytime picts.

| WRacerX | 01-11-2003 03:22 PM |
Just installed one of these (bought it from SubieGal - GREAT service). Thanks to Vostok 7 for the install instructions on the ScoobyMods forum. So far, I really like it. I did manage to get the vehicle speed sensor line hooked up, so the little bars on the gauge move when the vehicle is in motion (nice little effect). I just tapped directly into the vehicle speed signal line off of the ECU. In case you are wondering which wire that might be, here's how to find it.
First, access the ECU (it's under the carpet in the passenger side footwell, just pull the carpet back and remove a few 10mm nuts and bolts). With the ECU in your hands, looking directly at the end with all the cable connectors, the wire you want to tap is the green wire with the yellow stripe IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE RIGHT MOST CONNECTOR. It's very easy to find. I used the vampire tap that came with the gauge, but you'll need to extend the wire coming off the gauge in order to reach the ECU.
One other tip with this gauge - calibrate the compass (per gauge instructions) as soon as you get everything installed. Otherwise, you'll get some weird compass behavior. Mine wanted to continuously point south or south-east. After I calibrated it, everthing was fine.
enjoy,
WRacerX

I just finished mine too, thanks to Vostok 7 and his instructions- very easy install- I'll soon be connecting my speed sensor wire too, thanks to WRacerX!
One question: I have the mirror with compass from the factory, and I calibrated both compasses (stock and guage pack), but they read a little differently still. Oh well, I really only wanted the temp guage anyway- I have no use for the elevation/barometer features, although they do look kind of cool- next step is to get rid of the ugly green color in the pack and in the rest of the interior-I have some blue bulb covers I'll throw on soon...

Cool, glad I could be of help guys.
And thanks WRacerX, I'm going to hook up the speed sensor when I get a chance.
Lately the temperature's been acting up. For some reason whenever I go over a nearby pass the temp likes to stick. Like the other day it read 34 degrees when it was clearly warmer and even worse the other day it was reading 28 and it was warm and sunny. Not sure what causes it but it seems to work most of the time.
Someday I'm probably going to change the colors of my dash... Changing the colors on the gauge seems easy enough. The bulbs are accessed from the top (those two black knob looking things) then you just replace the light condom.

I also installed one of these in my 02 wrx. But I tapped the speed wire under the steering collum, its a big white plug and its still the green and yellow wire, just check for the 3rd wire dont remember which corner of the plug. You can tap it here only if you dont want to do it by the computer.
| jedimaster71472 | 01-11-2003 09:20 PM |
Wow- that sounds a lot easier- how did you know to tap the wire under the column?
| WWRRXX | 01-11-2003 09:59 PM |
I got the wire location from a service guy at the dealer i ordered the gauge pak from. Its also in the instructions that came with the gauge pak for impreza exept its not a blue conector its a white one, even the colors of the wires match up.
| jedimaster71472 | 01-11-2003 10:46 PM |
Cool! Thanks man- I know what I'm doing tomorrow!
EDIT: Is it under the column cover, or can you get to it by removing the bottom trim panel?

Did you use a tap in connector (like the one included in the kit) or some other method of connecting to the wire? I can't seem to get this to work and I'm 99.9% sure I've found the right wire.

Hmm it looks like that green/yellow wire under the steering column goes to the cruise control module, so that wire is only the speed sensor wire on manuals. On auto transmissions it's some TCU (transmission control unit?) wire?
