Bye Bye Car Keys!

Okay, a while back I shaved my door handles and trunk lock. Well I came up with this brilliant idea tonight. I have already started on it and should be finished in about 2 hours, waiting for some pieces to dry.
Okay heres the idea, I took my alarm fob thing and built into my cell phone, a Motorola T720. Its also powered by my cell phone. Well the next thing is to hook up to the back side, were it mounts into car holder made specially for it from Motorola, some metal strips, about 8 or so that have to match up the the ones on the phone mount in order to complete the circuit for a starter relay.
So since the keys are gone, this is how it would go.
I will walk up to the car, pull out my cell phone and push the button to open the drivers door and disarm the alarm. Once I sit down in the car and place the cell phone into the cradle. once it is placed in there the starter button will light up. After that I will flip the switch that will put into ACC. mode and then with a simple push of the starter button, on will go the car. When I go to cut off the car I will flip the switch back to the OFF position and remove the cell phone exit the car and push the ARM button on the phone. And off to do whatever.
So what do you all think? Well who cares really cause I think its awsome, almost James Bond'ish like.

all I have to say is I hope you have a contingency plan if you get drunk and lose your celly. If it falls in water... if it breaks... if the battery is dead... ect ect ect

Yes there is a back up plan, there will still be a place to use the regular car key, to get in the car or to start the car. Even if the phone dies there hould still be enough juice in the battery to open the door.

You really have to post some photos, otherwise, this is cool:eek:

Would any phone of the same model work for the ignition? It sounds like it would... Not the door locks, though.

dont lose your phone ;)

Okay heres some photos. Its not finished yet still got to wire the piece for power.
Heres an above shot with the phone with the face plate off showing the location of the alarm PCB. Also you will see the original face plate in silver and the modified one in black. If you look to the left you will see what I'm going to use for the key pad.

Heres a side view to show how much thicker the phone will be, its not much thicker about like 3 mm or so.

I will get the finished pictures of it up as soon as its done, which shouldn't be much longer.

Okay heres a pretty much finished painted version of the face plate, i still need to throw on a satin clear coat to get the exact match to the OEM pieces

smooth idea man and props to making it happen...
the only thing i'd question is what if your phone gets lost/broken/stolen, etc. i hope after going through all this you have a backup way to start it :)
otherwise you'll be with a car you can't start, and no way to call for help =)

How'd you make the new cover (or have it made). That looks pretty darn cool. For extra safety, you could include a backup battery for the opener. Just a suggestion... Hope the charge cradle looks this professional.
| Bobalouy | 08-07-2003 04:43 PM |
pritty cool Idea, I hate having a bunch of crap in my pockets.
Now you just need a keyless entry for your house, or maybe integrate a garage door opener into the phone.
:D
But I still have keys for work, so I dont think I could ever eliminate my keychain. Oh well. And my other problem would be that I am always changing cell phones.

I think the next step should be bio-related. (ie. retinal scans, or finger print or whatever.) That would be much safer unless you lose your eyes or fingers

Geez...the kind of trouble ppl go through just to open a door and start a car...

Okay i have ran into a problem.
Everthing is wired up and put together, but now it seems like I'm having a interfering problem. When the keychain PCB is next to the phone it will not work but when it is about a 1/4 inch away it works. How can I fix this or eliminate it?
Well i guess I will just get back to working on this. I'm going to get my hands on some of that elitrical shielding stuff for wires and put it on the back of the Keychain PCB and see if that works.
I will take some new pictures later on tonight.

Ok I think i now know the problem
I think that when I put the alarm piece on the phone that the antenna is being covered up
So I need to find out what part is the antenna on the PCB and add a wire to it to make it work

great idea and very feasible...however, dont EVER lose that phone...and pray that there isn't an instance when your phone and car battery are dead at the same time. perhaps a spare phone battery somewhere in the car would be a good idea. since you've shaved the door handles and trunk lock, you're totally dependent on the batter of the car for access to the vehicle. putting battery terminals somewhere on the underside of the vehicle so that you can jump start it in an unfortunate situation that the battery is dead. AAMP of America or other manufacturers of automotive accessories might have the terminals you need for that.
| IronMonkeyL255 | 08-08-2003 10:22 PM |
Or, just have a spare battery for the opener, like I mentioned before...

How are you getting around the steering wheel lock?
Your ignition cylinder is going to always be in the "Lock" position, meaning you can't turn your steering wheel.
It's gonna be way fuc_ing cool though, mad pimp factor.
