hey, this is just my thought on carbon fiber. i know that it is a great material to use and everything and it looks badass SOMETIMES, but dont you think it looks a little ugly when people go overboard? i mean, i was thinking cuz i heard about the carbon fiber 22b kit from aerosim, but dont you think it would look a little ugly if half the car is carbon fiber and half the car is some other color? so you could just repaint the carbon fiber. but then, wouldnt that make of no use for c/f cuz you could just get some other body kit, pay half the price, and be happy with it even though it would weigh more. and for everyones info, this would be for a daily driver car. everybody just post your opinions because this is a very interesting topic.

Carbon fiber is not hard to break at all. It can hold a lot of force, but it doesn't have enough give, where if you hit it just strong enough (not that hard really), it will split and crack, and eventually break.

I wish I had taken pics of it. Just imagine what a metal hood looks like when buckled. Then picture than hood in almost two pieces where it buckled, with fabric hanging out all over the place. I have a piece of the hood that I turned into a keychain for memory sake and could EASILY snap it in two. It is only strong when structured to be strong.

The Aerosim kit uses carbon fiber for strength and ease of forming the kit, not for looks. You are expected to paint it.

How can aerogel damage CF? Aerogel is like 99.8% air and a tiny bit of silica. It's like foam.
http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/tech/aerogel.html
CF is pretty strong stuff, though. I read an article about the Saleen S7.. it has a 1" thick CF front lip; supposedly, that lip is strong enough to hold the entire weight of the car.
If you pound on it with a hammer though, I bet it'd shatter.

There is a distinction that needs to be made when you guys are talking about carbon fiber. If you think about your stereotypical carbon fiber hood it has been formed using a process called "wet-layup". This process involves using one or two sheets of the carbon fiber material and soaking it in a resin to get it to hold its shape. This process does not lend itself to a wonderful amount of strength. The process used in F1 cars and what not is called "dry-layup". This is a MUCH more expensive process but the end product is much lighter and stronger. With the dry layup the carbon fiber sheet is already inpregnated with a resin type material and the sheet is formed to the shape that they want. The thickness of the thing being formed is based solely on the amount of CF they use in a dry layup process. So when you guys talk about carbon fiber being really hard to damage, that is true with dry-layup, but untrue with wet-layup. Damaging a piece of wet-layup carbon fiber is as easy as breaking a piece of dried resin. Hope that helps, sorry for the long post.

TVA is correct, "dry layup" or what's known as pre-preg carbon is much stronger than wet layup carbon. It depends on the skill of the laminator and the process used to cure the resin, but it's typically much stronger. Carbon fibers are incredibly strong for their weight, but since they are incredibly thin they break easily. The resin that holds them together is the ultimate determining factor in the overall strength of the part, so getting the proper resin/fiber ratio and using hard to damage resin is extremely important. That's where the pre-preg carbon fabric is so much better than wet lay-up. The resin is applied under controlled conditions in a factory so the ratio is correct. When it's done with a wet lay-up it's extremely hard to get less than 50% resin by weight and still get the resin to soak all the way through the carbon.
Anyway, I'm using pre-preg in my kits for several reasons. 1. I hate messy resins 2. The weave is more uniform and looks better 3. It's stronger than wet lay-up 4. It can be made lighter because it's stronger 5. I hate messy resins. Oh yeah .... and I have a huge oven sitting in the shop to cook the parts in.
-Steve
PS. Fiberglass comes in pre-preg form as well and that's how we'll be offering the fiberglass kits.

BTW carbon fiber CAN break (i've worked with it). its very strong, but like fiberglass it will crack. just look at pics of a champ car after it has wrecked, lots of pricy broken carbon fiber pieces. As for a good resource to get it cheap... www.carb.com for mat (6 oz twill is what the hoods are usually made out of) and www.fibreglast.com or www.acp-composites.com are good sources to get vacuum bagging supplies and material.

Thank you to Steve at Aerosim for straightening some of this carbon fiber "mis"information out. First of all, one must remember carbon wasnt invented to make hoods and fenders. It was made to be a structural component of serious racing cars. The carbon work that most people are familiar with usually involves a lot of fiberglass under the carbon, is wet lay up, is very heavy and is very weak. Proper carbon work, as Ill call it, is usually prepreg, is very strong, and is very lightweight (depending on several factors). How light a piece of carbon work is depends on number of layers, the thickness of those individual layers, percentage resin content, use of nomex or aluminum honeycomb, vacuum/autoclave use and many other factors.
Just remember that when you purchase a piece of carbon work you get what you pay for. If it is a light piece, it is more than likely going to be a much more expensive piece. If it is heavy and has fiberglass underneath the carbon top layer (like many hoods on the market) you will find it to be much less expensive. If done correctly, a proper hood for a touring car doing serious racing (with serious weight reduction in mind) should weigh no more than 8 pounds. How much does the average aftermarket carbon/fiberglass hood weigh? A lot, but remember it is much, much cheaper than the 8 pound hood.
