Changing colour for the dash lights part 1

Changing colour for the dash lights

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to change the light colour on the heater controls and the gauges? I have attempted on the 2002 impreza and I manage to remove the centre and get down to the heater controls but I was unable to go any further. Has anyone tried or have any idea on what to do so you will be able to change the green light on the heater controls?

Thanks

Funny you post this, did this about 5 minutes ago. You're going to need some bulb condoms, 2 of them to be exact, might want to get more though because I tore one very easily. Not sure if they are 3mm or 5mm in size. First remove the trim panel. You have to remove the 3 large knobs, and the single slider knob at the bottom. It was difficult to do by hand, so I used a cloth (didn't want to scratch anything) to wrap around some pliers and gently pull. The two push button ones can stay on. Then unscrew the unit. Slide it forward. There are 2 tabs on the top and 2 on the bottom where the face holds on. Use a screw driver as your pull at the face on these tabs. Ta da! You can now see the two bulbs. I pulled them out of the sockets, changed condoms, repeat instructions in reverse order.
SilverWRX02 05-26-2002 05:43 PM

where did you get the condoms at???
did you change the stock headunit color also?
this mod you're talkin about its just AC knobs right?
WRX4U2NV 05-26-2002 10:36 PM

I would definately like to know where to get the condoms also. I hate green!! As far as scratching knobs goes, you can also wrap a pair of pliars in several layers of electrical tape and your worry free. I use this technique quite often.:D
Gonorio 05-27-2002 01:59 AM

Thanks! I was kinda scared to pull hard on the heater switches. Where did you get the colour condom? I need some too.
tsbarro 05-27-2002 03:57 PM

Ok, is there a more technical name for the light condems??!!
I don't think my local autozone guys would help me if I went in asking for them!!

Is this method suitable for changing all of the lights in the dash, as well as the guage lights?? I'm looking for the blue/red VW look, but am not sold on the Indiglo guage option..

Thanks,
Ts

Changing the 2 bulbs that you mentioned sounds fine and all, but can anything be done about the stereo display? I got my reverse indiglo gauges and they look better in blue than in green (but in either color, they look great), but unlesss the radio can also be changed color I wouldn't bother.
FoRCeFeDWRX 05-27-2002 10:46 PM

I remember some guy on the board, I forgot who it was, who changed his whole dash (including his radio) from green to blue. He got the bulb covers from www.partsexpress.com ..hope that helps!

Gonorio 05-27-2002 10:49 PM

The stereo can change colour but it is not as easy as changing the bulb . . . You'll have to open it up and change the LED inside and that will require soldering. I am just considering in changing the headunit anyways since the sound isn't that good.

I was wondering if I can just pull on the bottom lever, the lever that controls whether air from the outside comes in or not, to remove it and to access the bulbs inside?
ej25power 05-28-2002 10:14 PM

I can't find the bulb covers at partsexpress.com!
Could someone point me in the right directin please?
thanks

Actually . . . If you want something that will last for a long time and give off a nice powerful blue light, you can try LED wedge bulbs. Go here http://www.ledtronics.com/ and click on the miniature based LED lamps. Once in the, you will see some T1 midget wedge bulb. There are the 5mm and the 4.5mm. I think you will need 5mm with a .2 inch base for the heater controls (you'll need 2 of them) and the 4.5mm with a .18 inch base for the gauges (I think you will need 6 of them). It is a good idea to use these LED bulbs because you can even change the colour of the LCD display that shows the mileage to a cool blue. The down side is that it is $10US a piece and if you need 8 of them, that will cost you $80 . . . I think we should take a poll to see who wants it and maybe we can get a lot of these wedge bulb and get a good price on them. If anyone else have a good idea pleaes post.

Id in for a group buy if you could get the price down. if we can get enough guys we could just go to a supplier and get a really good deal.

set it up... im in.

>I would definately like to know where to get the condoms also. I hate green!!

I know this may sound silly but there is a reason dash lights are green or yellow/green. It's the best colour for the eyes to focus on and see at night. Blue is probably the worst color as it will look fuzzy is hard on the eyes. Blue light will give the least definition around the edges, especially at night

The condoms came from partsexpress.com, but no from the online part, it's in the catalog itself. I got them from a guy that got them this method and he had some leftovers.

As for the radio, a nice Pioneer 940MP will do just nicely. Some people have changed the radio, supposedly you can send it to some guy to do it, but it was only in red that I saw. It's not going to be worth it.

Anyways, the only thing left is the foglight and cruise control lights, and the window light on the door, right now everything's blue! :D
ScoobyBoy 05-29-2002 04:43 AM

how dim are the lights now that you used the condoms? i would like to have blue lights instead of the ever so boring green. then i can get the new cobalt gauges to match.
:D
6Pack 05-29-2002 11:08 AM

It's not as strong of a blue as the reverse indiglo, but it's the same as the autometer with a bulb condom. Because it's a different color, I'm not sure how dim it is. But if it's any indication, I can't really tell. So that's good, I guess. :)
ScoobyBoy 05-29-2002 02:57 PM

any pics?

Gonorio 05-29-2002 04:45 PM

There is a green condom on top of the bulbs right now and once you recover the covers, you will notice the brightness difference. But the gauges have a green colour to them and same goes with the LCD display that indicate the mileage on your car. With a LED bulb you can get around that since the light from the LED is very bright and if you get a blue one, that will show with no problem. The thing you will have to worry about the LED bulb is the viewing angle. The place that is listed above has the 120degree of viewing angle and that will light up the dash nicely but I have tried just putting a narrow viewing angle LED for the LCD display and you will get a blue dot in the centre and the other areas are blue. For sure you will get a brighter bluer result with a LED bulb than a condom . . . Infact you will get the same result as you would with a reverse indiglo. I have not purchase the LED bulbs yet but I will show you with my narrow LED on how it looks like.

I'll take pics soon, probably tomorrow night or so by the latest hopefully. People have said to scratch the greenish off of the back of the faceplate, but it looks pretty good. It's the exact same color as my autometer gauges with the condom, so I won't touch my setup. Also for the LEDs, I've read on other forums how people have fixed this. People have dremeled off a bit of the top and polished it to increase the angle.
WRX4U2NV 05-29-2002 06:23 PM

I already ordered my reverse indiglos but I would definately like to change the odometer from blue to green. My question is, Can I change just one or two of the LED's in the dash to make the odometer blue? Also, will it affect the reverse indliglo's. I try to avoid being ghetto with any modification and cleanliness of an installation is a top priority.

Here is one picture . . .
I only have one LED laying around so I've just decided to try it out. I am not too sure what will happen with the blue condom because the backing is really green and I don't believe that a colour condom would shine as nicely as a LED would. The only problem I am having is that the bulb is still have narrow and I need to find a way around it.
fullvision 05-30-2002 12:17 AM

this might sound stupid but what voltage are those LEDs on the climate control??
are they 12 volt just like everything else in the car?
Gonorio 05-30-2002 02:57 AM

LED uses 3V and you will need to put a resistor on them or they will burn out. I tried sanding off the top to get a more wide spread on the light on it still did not do it. :( I don't know how the LED bulb will turn out but I do believe the 120degree will do the trick. But if it does work . . . it will be cheaper then the reverse indiglo but without the white backing.

-gonorio
Diversion 05-30-2002 03:41 AM

LEDs come in just about all voltages, not just 3 volt.

Basically, your car runs at 12 volts. If you have a 5volt LED you will need to proper resistor to step down the power to use the LED or it will burn out immediately, as previously said.

LEDs are not good to use for dashboard illumination on the WRX.. normally cars that use LED illumination use clear plastic over the led to focus the light where they want. In the WRX it just uses clear/white windows, you need to use the mini bulbs that are in use already. If you must use an LED, try to find an LED with the largest viewing angle, those will have the widest beam of light, at the cost of light intensity.

Just a little advice. Use normal incandescent minibulbs (kind that the dash already uses) and use colored condoms or dip the bulbs in translucent paints.

I am not too sure if they can run at 5V. Check out www.nichia.com. I just said 3V because I was affraid people would over power their LED and get a very short life out of them. Just wanted to play it save.

wrxlvr, replied back to you. Unsure of which lights you want to change. My second post in this thread has detailed instructions on how to change the lights in the HVAC unit. Gauges are simple, but I wouldn't recommend changing the bulbs in the cluster, because the back of the face is painted with some green goo that you'll have to scrape, and I've read horror stories of what happens. I'd recommend buying the reverse indiglo, it's worth it.
Bankheist 05-31-2002 10:10 AM

condoms alone will not help.

anyone here in Dress up that regonizes my name, know I'm talking from experience.

in both models of impreza, there is a white bulb emitting light from behind the dash, then the light is goes through a green film on the gauge backing itself, then through a clear layer.

you need to remove the green film (by scratching it off) doing this you risk really ******* up your gauges. THEN you can place a condom over the bulb.

BTW, you can get those condoms at Autometer red, blue, green and yellow.
BlackBeastie 05-31-2002 10:41 AM

Bankheist speaks the truth. You can easily change the color of your HVAC controls by using the color condoms but the instrument cluster is colored by a coating on the back (I am speaking about an 02WRX) . I have taken the whole instrument cluster out and apart and examined it closely. You can sand off the coating, but you may screw it up badly. This method also requires that you take the needles off, another operation that can cause major headaches. A reverse indiglo would be the easiest option. Again, this is for 02 WRX (and probably RS as well). There have been a few threads about this subject posted previously.
Gonorio 05-31-2002 01:33 PM

I will insist in trying to install LEDs inside my gauges. I've posted one pic showing the LCD mileage in blue (you cannot get this with the reverse indiglo). And if you take a look at the bulb behind the mileage display, you will discover that the bulb has no green cover and that the backing of the LCD display for the mileage is very green. It is possible to remove the green backing (seen it done on a Focus) but there are high risks involved in the job. The LEDs are not affect by the green backing (seen on the picture before). Once I've completed the project, I will post more pictures on how it looks.

wrxlvr 05-31-2002 03:16 PM

Gonorio,

I want to know how you did it when it's done. Where can you find LED's that will plug directly in. Or do you have to solder and put resistors on all the bulbs??? You can PM me, Email me, or just post in this thread.
BlackBeastie 05-31-2002 04:05 PM

the color of the mileage display can be changed by exchanging the bulb from behind there it is the rest of the gauges that have the green backing. If you can find a relatively painless way to remove that backing and change the color of the dash you would probably have a lot of very interested people. I don't see an easy way for it to be done though and I would not want to risk screwing up my needles to change the color.

Changing Stock Stereo Color

First of all, for those of you who are having trouble finding the bulb condoms on partsexpress, just search for "lamp cover"- they're all there. Shipping is a flat 8 bucks or something, which is A LOT for those teeny condoms, but they sent me a free bag of popcorn, a nice letter thanking me for my purchase, a catalogue, and a handy mini pen screwdriver. Kinda neat I thought.

Anyways, I was able to change the color of all of the buttons on my stock head unit, as well as the HVAC controls. I have an '02 OBS, which is different from the WRX, but I imagine that the stereos are similarly constructed.

Ok, here goes. Hope this helps:
(remember, this is for the stock unit on an OBS (the same that comes with the 2.5 RS and the TS wagon)

You will need some very small screwdrivers, tweezers, and 4 of the 2mm sized bulb condoms (.12" diameter). (The HVAC takes 5mm, or .2" diameter).

-Take any CDs out of your player.
-Take off the center dash moulding. You need to pry it off (it's easiest to start by popping out the cupholder- right under there you can see the line where to pry it.)
-Unscrew the 6 screws holding the stereo bracket in place
-I took the stereo out of the bracket so it would be easier to work with (4 gold screws), but I don't think this is necessary. You DO NOT have to unplug the wires.
-The front part of the head unit is black plastic, the rest is metal. You want to remove whole plastic part (it has all of the buttons on it and the lcd). There are no screws- all you have to do is pull and get a little flat screwdriver or something under those little black clips. I think there are 8 of them- 2 on top and bottom, and 2 on each side. They're not too bad.

-Here comes the tricky part: Take the whole plastic unit inside somewhere- you DO NOT want to lose anything. BE CAREFEL: the pieces are delicate. Everything should come apart very nicely if done properly. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!
-Now, unscrew the 4 tiny phillips screws holding the circuit board in place.
-Remove the volume knob (you have to pull pretty hard, don't worry, it won't break).
-Take out the long thin felt piece where the cd goes in. There are 4 little plastic clips that you have to pry on a little to get it to pop out. It may not seem like this part has to come out, but trust me, it does. It took me like 10 min. to figure out.
-Now, look how the circuit board is fastened- little tiny projections (almost like clips) that go into the sides of the plastic around the edges. Remove the circuit board by pushing in all of those little clips (lightly pulling on the plastic helps a lot- it's not too difficult).
-Once you take out the circuit board, take off the big clear plastic piece (it carries the light to the different buttons). It should come right off.
-Notice the 4 small bulbs with green covers. Use the tweezers to take off the covers, and put on the color of your choice.
-Re-assemble in the opposite order.

I used the blue bulb condoms, which give it sort of an aqua look (like turquoise). It's not what I was really hoping for, but I like it, and it doesn't look bad with the green lcd and clock. If you want to know what it will look like, do the HVAC mod before you go ahead and take apart the stereo- the colors work out to be EXACTLY the same.

I don't think it's possibly to change the color of the lcd. It's soddered onto the circuit board, and I didn't feel nearly confident enough to take it off.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I hope these instructions were clear enough- it's pretty hard to explain.

Pics

Sorry, I don't have a digi cam. I know it sounded really complex, but it's really not too bad. I mean, I figured it out, and I have never really worked with cars or stereos before. (I just like taking things apart, and hopefully putting them back together!) If you have any questions, feel free to email or PM me. If someone wants to send me red bulb condoms, I'll go through and document the process with my camera and scan the pics. I don't want to spend another $14 for those things.

Thanks.

Well I'm new to this board but I'm an administrator for accordv6.com (my accord got gone this past monday so I could have a real performance car :D ) Anyways.. some of the guys on our forum have done some serious work to their interiors since well let's face it.. the v6 accord isn't going to go very fast no matter what you do to it. So.. here are a couple tips from my experience.

The LEDs everyone sells on ebay, etc are narrow focused. If you use those you will have hot spots and lots of shadow. You need to get wide angle LEDs, usually around 120 degree. These aren't cheap... One guy dropp $120 on LEDs and did his entire dash. Looks great, IF you have that kind of money to spend.

About the green filter... If you're going for a blue look, it's not too much of a problem. Other colors it will be a huge problem. But yeah, you should probably get rid of the filter for the best color.

Bulb "condoms" = BAD IDEA... They're too dim. Go to your local Michaels or other hobby/craft store. Hunt down some stained glass paint. It comes in spray or bottled form. A couple thin coats will get you the color you want without the dull look of the bulb condoms. I did this with my accord and had a great red dash. Incidently.. a whole bottle of paint is like $2 and it'll be MORE than enough. I think this is the best way to go. I will be doing my dash soon hopefully so I'll try and get pictures and a better guide for you all.

Painting vs. Condoms

The disadvantage to painting is that it's not really reversible, unless you want to go out and buy new bulbs. You can switch condoms real easily if you decide you don't like it or you want a change.

Yes, the bulb condoms are dim, but DEFINITELY bright enough to see. I'd say that (in blue- i would imagine red to be brighter) they're only a little dimmer than the stock green condoms. Definitely still very legible at night- I'm keeping them.
Canadian 2.5RS 06-01-2002 02:45 PM

Somebody put this "bright enough/not bright enough" question to rest and post some pics. i would also like to see the LED 120 degrees or otherwize pics.

Personally i would like to go with the LED way of switching out the lights. i have bad experience with the stain glass paint melting. when the light gets remotely hot, the paint melts to form a solid drip at the the part of the light that faces downward. and you get this funky blue/green/clear mess of light.
6Pack 06-02-2002 10:35 PM

Painting is not the best solution. If you check the previous threads on this subject, a few have tried this and said this is the worst of all the evils. Most importantly the paint fades quickly. Any I took pics, a little blurry, and I had to brighten the pics, but you'll get the idea.

Here's a pic of the interior all together. It's a bit blurry, and I had to brighten it, but you'll get the idea. My cluster is the reverse indiglo gauges. You can see the radio for comparison. You can see that the HVAC controls are bearly any difference on brightness than the radio. Up on the top of the pic you can see my autometer guages with a blue condom. You can see that the color is EXACTLY the same as the autometer gauges with a blue condom. Cheap, easy, and great results.

No prob. As for my radio, that should be replaced this weekend with a nice Pioneer MP3 enabled HU. Then all that's left are my window control lights, foglight/crusie light, and mileage backlight.
metoo 06-11-2002 12:41 PM

I want a blue cluster badly....VERY BADLY. However the reverse indigo gages are not an option. Despite the overwelming response to the idea in http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145444&highlight=reverse , no one has marketed black faced gages with blue display readings. I'll be the first to buy these when/if they become available.

Until then, if the LED solution works, I will give it a shot.
