Looks quite good, I must say!
artkevin 09-23-2004 02:50 PM

Im not a big fan of the starshine effect thingy going on but it looks good other wise. Can't wait to see the new track.

I really like this livery although I am also a fan of the Lucky Strike livery too.

My fearless picks:

1. MS
2. Raikkonen
3. Rubinho
4. Button
5. Fernando
6. JPM
7. Pizza man
8. Jackie Newtown scores for Renault!
AndyRoo 09-23-2004 07:01 PM

Shanghai!!!!
Time to show the bad Chinese drivers what real skilled driving is!!! :D
BillT 09-23-2004 10:49 PM

I got my dvr set for the races. Here's my picks:

1. MS - Brand new track, I have to go with the best driver in the best package
2. RB - Michael won't let him have this one
3. KR - Dreams the McLaren had the red cars reliability
4. JB - Good effort, but not good enough for a podium
5. JPM - On cruise control until next year
6. FA - Not in contention this weekend
7. JV - Still outperformed by JB, but a good showing in first race back
8. TS - He'll shine in Suzuka, but not here
Bonzo 09-24-2004 09:26 AM

I might have to stay up late tonite. Practice is at midnite for me.

I like the color change, but I also like the previous BAR color scheme.

Does anyone know where one can see a track map, drawing or schematic?
tia.
BillT 09-24-2004 11:01 AM

Check out www.formula1.com and click on the red highlighted track outline at the top of the page and you'll get a map of the circuit. By moving your cursor over the little red and grey circles around the track you can get photo's and information about the turns - its pretty cool.

Ferrari was concerned that they were having difficulty in finding the right setup for Shanghai - too much understeer. I'm sure they have that sorted out by race time. Ant did well in practice (again) - I'm sure he'll find his way to a driver's seat soon enough.
TimStevens 09-24-2004 11:05 AM

was surprised to see the McLarens up there near the top. Wonder how long that'll last for...
Leonardo 09-24-2004 11:09 AM

I still say Chili Dog wil podium to let Williams know what they lost for next year!

Besides, he digs the return of the old style nose.

cloud7 09-24-2004 11:47 AM

the blue 555 livery is only on Anthony Davidson's BAR... and not on JB or TS... although their car will have 555 branding.

JV is back and as always Renault is somewhere in the middle of the pack on the first day because they alway run at lower revs on the first day. JV was only three tenths from FA on the first day. Not too bad.
bemani 09-24-2004 01:10 PM

What a boring looking track!
Bonzo 09-24-2004 01:36 PM

thanks BillT. That is very cool.

IMHO the track looks like a challenge. Turns 1-2 look like a nice increasing rad turn. Looks to be 3 maybe 4 passing spots (1,6,11,14), which is much better than many existing tracks. 12-13 combination looks very important for exit speed so that will test rear grip and power to teh ground. Plus some nice med to high speed sweepers to balance that aero setup equation.

Looking forward to practice.
bemani 09-24-2004 01:44 PM

I'm sure its challenging, what I said I meant landscaping wise. Looks like they just reclaimed some land in the middle of nowhere and put a track on it.
Rapid_Roo 09-24-2004 01:55 PM

gotta wonder why its already all rippled in the braking zones.

and I really like that 555 livery. I also noted the the T-car had the regular livery but with the "555" logo on it.
BillT 09-24-2004 03:02 PM

Bad news for Sato fans - he blew his engine in practice so he'll be sent back 10 spots from where he qualifies at. I wonder if his driving style has anything to do with his failures of if it is just plain bad luck.
Arioch 09-24-2004 03:45 PM
What a boring looking track!
O.o

You're kidding, right? Looks like there are 1 or 2 good passing spots on the new Shanghai circuit.

Turn 14, at the end of a sutpidly long straight into a very tight looking hairpin... I expect to see some out-breaking going into this corner.

Might also see some passing from drafting up the long straight from T16 to T1. Seems that Turn 16 is going to be just about flat-out, so from T14 to T1, that's a nice long time to get close and draft-pass someone before braking into T1.

I'll be up late tonight to see the track live. Can't wait.

There should be no way that his driving style had anything to do with it. He could have only put a few laps on the thing. If he can blow an engine with a handful of laps he shouldn't be anywere near an F1 car.

Perhaps he has a different spec engine that Button...other than Ferrari because their cars are so reliable the failures seem to be spread somewhat evenly between the two drivers (though I believe Kimi has had more than his share of mechanical woes compared to DC), but with Sato and Button, a vast majority of failures (big, spectacular, smokey engine failures to be specific) have been on Sato's car - I'm just speculating to the cause and curious if anyone else has thoughts on the matter.
bemani 09-24-2004 07:47 PM

Do they share mechanics? Maybe there's something going on with his mechanic...
pio!pio! 09-24-2004 08:08 PM

It's the Jock Clear curse :)
He was also JV's race engineer and look at JV's reliability at BAR.... :P:P
NC2.5RS 09-25-2004 12:41 AM

Prequalifying is in 20 minutes.
Lightning Jack 09-25-2004 02:02 AM

what happened to Sato? and who is davidson?
artkevin 09-25-2004 02:13 AM

Sato's engine went boom and Davidson (also know as Ant) is BAR's test driver so if you don't watch friday practice you won't see him. Both are very good drivers but Ant gets flattered by low fuel levels for good times.
BillT, I heard that Sato actually under revs his engine compared to the other BAR drivers. He uses his throttle like an on-off switch so his revs tend to die. The engineers say that the Honda likes to stay high in the RPMs but that is also why he tend to detonate after long pit stops.

last to spin goes to the end.

love the track!

IIRC the engine block is also a structural element. If he's hitting the curbs harder than Button and the block isn't totally rigid, then bye-bye engine.

Here were my Pick6 choices

M.Schumacher
J.Button
F.Alonso
K.Raikkonen

J.Montoya
D.Coulthard
J.Trulli

Just some mix-it-up for a new track

All I have to say is that this race is going to be verrry interesting. Will Schumacher do a Monza, or an '03 Suzuka?

His qualifying lap looked a little ragged right from the start. The pre-qualifying was more an indicator of his true form, I think, where he set a time that was three tenths faster than anyone else that weekend, and didn't look like he was working all that hard.

But, he has some formidable cars to pass. The good thing is, long straightaways and you can try many different lines on the track. The bad thing is, while he's coming up from the back, the front runners are checking out. You just KNOW that guys like Villeneuve, Sato and Webber are going to make their cars really, really wide.

If Ferrari is thinking, they already have a different pit strategy all figured out, as they did at Monza, with the very long first stint.

Meanwhile, Barrichello's renaissance continueth. He is finally coming to terms with the F2004, just in time for the F2005! He's an excellent driver and a really nice guy, and I'm glad to see him getting on the stick. He finally has some luck coming his way, too. His drive at Monza was just awesome. Sure, Schumacher was faster over the last third of the race, but no way was Ferrari letting MS pass Barrichello, even if the faster car didn't win. It would have been a PR nightmare.

Villeneuve seems to be something of a tempest in a teapot, though we can't be surprised. You can't take a year off, and come right back with that same edge. He should race better, though. I think Ralf will be gun shy. I look for him to move backward at the start. I missed the predictions, so I won't add mine as that would just be cheating.

But I don't think that a red car is going to be on the top step of the podium. Barrichello isn't fast enough to deal with Raikkonen, presuming the McLaren holds up, and by the time Schumacher gets up to the dance, if he ever does, Raikkonen will be long gone.

I'm surprised Ferrari is starting Schumacher on the grid, though. I know that there is the chance to make up places at the start, but the Ferraris don't start that well, and there's just too much risk of running into a slower car. I would have thought that Brawn would pull him, load the car up with fuel and hard Bridgestones, and try a one-stopper or something.

We don't have long to find out, and frankly, I'm glad that he spun. He's already got the WDC, so now we get to see what kind of a driver he really is, with nothing on the line. Monza showed us a lot, particularly those folks who said that Schumacher can't pass under racing conditions. Hopefully the world feed folks will pay more attention to him. I watched Monza in France, and French TV (they were covering the race on their own) paid a lot more attention to Schumacher. His charge to the front was electrifying. On the Speed Channel world feed, you don't see very much of it.

Yep, pretty interesting way to get there, though. Good race.
Bonzo 09-26-2004 01:13 PM

I am very impressed by the track and facilities. The pit straight and grandstands are a sight to behold. imo, very cool architecture, esp the wing shaped bridge.

I also love the track design. Having several straights give racers a chance to pass. The only negative is the long rh turns which kills left fronts.

China has set the standard.
gtguy 09-26-2004 07:42 PM

The Woobins Wenaissance continues! Awesome drive by Barrichello, who is really coming into his own. I do wonder if the McLaren was detuned a bit for reliability, but Raikkonen also had an excellent drive as did Jenson Button, who must be wondering what in the heck he has to do to win a race.

The Saubers were erratic but fun to watch, and Sato showed maturity and speed in coming from the back to a well-earned 6th spot.

Nice to see that R. Schumacher is back to full whining form. He must have been working on that during his layoff. Montoya seems like he can't wait for this season to be over.

And oh, M. Schumacher. Looks like an '03 Suzuka instead of an '05 Monza, right down to an ill-advised passing attempt. Just substitute Klien for Sato, though this time, Schumacher's nose was left intact.

Apparently a traction control software problem led to his pair of high-speed spins in the same spot on the track in both qualifying and the race, according to Planet F1. Be that as it may, what was Ferrari thinking, starting him from the pit lane, rather than on the grid like Sato, who passed four cars right at the start. I have to think the Ferrari, set up to race, would have done better, and been right in the fight, rather than starting out with a ten-second deficit. Schumacher's good, but that's superhuman, which he isn't. Not sure what Brawn was thinking on that one, particularly given that Ferrari had already chosen the softer tire option and a two-stop strategy. Might he have run into someone on the grid? Sure, but he would have had a better chance.

I really liked the race radio feeds, particularly when Bruni was three-wheeling it, and his pit was telling him to stay off the racing line. Was that an expletive I heard?

Meanwhile, Barrichello has to like his chances at Suzuka, also, where he dominated last year. But M. Schumacher is going to be furious I think, and raring to go. His fastest lap was pretty funny, set by the 12th-place car that was one lap down. The way he ran right over to congratulate Barrichello showed a lot of class, too, as did his post-race comments.

Sauber continues to amaze me... There are now 5 big budget teams who are all capable of putting one of their cars on the podium at any given race. So that is 10 cars fighting for points handed out to the top 8 finishers. And Sauber had both of his cars grab points against the big budget teams! Outstanding!

Flavio Briatore tried to trade Giancarlo to Peter Sauber for Jacques Villeneuve for these last 3 races, and Sauber said no thank you. Peter is a smart man!
